I got through almost every single multiplayer quest in Freedom Unite by myself, but the one roadblock I had to get my brother to help me with was the Two Tigrex urgent quest near the end of high rank

Some weapons seem to be so much smoother in Valor style than others, long sword is great, hammer takes a little while to get into Valor mode but holy hell is it sick once its there, then charge blade takes ages to get the bar filled and just doesn't really do it for me once its in Valor mode, as nice as the looping A attacks are the biggest weakness the weapon has always had is that outside of knockdowns (and its not nearly as good at KOing as it was in 4U) it rarely has time for its most damaging moves as it is. idk its fun on weaker monsters that get flinched a lot, probably would be cool in multiplayer but it's not quite what I'd hoped for.

...I should probably actually use Alchemy style at some point. Still haven't touched it.

yeah, not all styles are great for every weapon.

alchemy is pretty underwhelming for basically everything, but there is a couple weapons it works pretty well for. i think alchemy hammer is the big one.

charge blade is just underwhelming in general in the xgen games

Yeah I don't know why charge blade needed a huge damage nerf, significant KO nerf, significant nerf to elemental phials (which already were situational as hell), nerf to its blocking ability and having stuff like shield thrust to super removed and requiring you to go into axe mode to charge red shield. I can understand having a couple of those nerfs but all of them together is just overkill. At least they gave us Energy Blade to look stylish with, even if actually aiming the damn thing is oddly tough.

At the same time I guess there's kind of a fun satisfaction in assembling an armor set with really fitting skills that doesn't make you look super goofy.

On the one hand, I like the transmog thing

On the other hand, when games give me the option to customize my appearance, I almost always end up trying to make my character look as absurd as possible. I might end up being the only player in GU who uses transmog to make my hunter look MORE ridiculous

lmao yeah. at least hbg requires a lot of planning and doesn't work on everything because of ammo limits.

on the subject of patch nerfs, i wouldn't be surprised to see great sword jump attacks nerfed pretty soon. ryozo was at one of the time trial championships recently, and people completely destroyed the quest with two greatswords spamming the ledge attack. the look on ryozo's face was so disappointed. for the next tournament quest, they changed a greatsword set to a longsword set as a result.

yeah i love transmog but fashion hunting is one of the best things about monhun endgame for me so i don't mind not having it. for the exact reason you said, finding the right balance of function and form.

In other news, i have been playing dauntless because i am craving hunting game but am tired of all the monhun games i have access to

Its not very good. Bad fight design, tons of bugs, shallow weapon combos. It's good enough that i keep playing but man, i want new monhun.

Almost caved and got frontier, but i dont feel like having to deal with japanese text dor everything.

Yeah I guess play with friends would be the next best option if you're going to have Dive Right into a straight Monster Hunter to have them teach you first hand

I did that with tri played with my 3 friends all the time but every one since then I've played 90% solo

Try out the weapon tutorial quests, they aren't really good at the whole "tutorial" thing (for that look in your Hunter's Notes on the in game menu, it isn't perfect but it at least tells you the controls and basics of the weapon) but it gives you a chance to figure out which weapon(s) appeal to you. Finding a weapon that you really like playing is key to getting into the series.

Beyond that, remember that combat in Monster Hunter is supposed to be a bit slower paced than you'd expect, your attacks will lock you in place for a while (especially with the slower weapons) so you have to learn the monsters moveset enough to know how many hits you can fit into any given opening safely. Trading hits is not going to work here (it might to an extent in low rank, but later on it's a recipe for disaster), and while your dodge roll (or sidestep) does have invincibility frames (necessary for dealing with certain attacks reliably), its not all that much. This isn't a game where you go nuts mashing attack buttons and just time a dodge input to solve all problems, you have to position yourself properly to be able to get out of the way and cut your combos short at the right time to be safe.

Also, as tedious as it can be, gathering items is important early on. Later in the game you'll be able to get more of most useful items you already have, but its limited to begin with and you'll want to build up a stock pile. Checking the DLC menu helps a lot with this, while the quests are mostly restricted to later in the game, you can get item packs right away that give you a huge head start. It's nothing game breaking, just a big time saver.

coop is tons of fun, but solo is a lot of fun too.

solo gives you complete control over the monster/its AI and you can do a lot of really cool things because you know the monster's full attention is on you.

And now I'm done village high rank with the defeat of Valstrax! Man I love that monster. The fight had a pretty amusing ending, as I somehow managed to have basically every part of him a few hits away from a flinch, so when he tried to limp out I ended up just flinching him about four times in a row until he died.

Is it just my imagination or did they make Nargacuga a lot tougher in G rank here than he was in 3U? Seems faster, and he definitely has some changes to his attack pattern

It's entirely possible that World has simply dulled my senses and that's why Narga gave me some issues yesterday. He's usually really easy *if* you're used to him, so I might just have lost some of that familiarity.

One thing I did not miss was the "joy" of trying to use bow while small monsters endlessly swarm you, blocking your shots and flinching you out of charges from offscreen. I don't know how Apceros manage to survive getting ran over by a Lavasioth seventeen million times or why it motivates them to get revenge on me instead of it, but it does not make me happy

I've found rooms where people take turns doing quests! They are bit harder to find than the Keys Only / Urgents only. But they do exist!

It feels nice to have actual G rank equipment now, things die a bit faster and don't hit quite so hard now. Fought the deviant Ceanataur in high rank gear in while I did beat it, its big attacks did like 90% damage when I messed up. Might be nice to tone that down to, idk, 75% or so <_<

I want to play more but I played like 10 hrs every day the last 3 days and now have a headache...

Well speaking of keys and urgents earlier, I just joined in someone's Lao Shan urgent. That was every bit the repetitive time sink I expected. My standard policy of always soloing my own urgents is going to either be broken or break my soul, I can already tell. At least he's ever so slightly more active in this game than he was in FU.

Like potions and such? Hold L and press Y or A to scroll through your inventory, then press Y to use one. You need your weapon sheathed to use items, except for Sword and Shield, which can use items by holding R and pressing Y

The game really doesn't tell you much about its controls unless you actually look at the controls in the Hunter's Notes section of the menu. It was definitely one of my biggest gripes when I got into the series, how little effort it seems to make to appeal to people who aren't already familiar with it.

I hate when my equipment progression is slowed down by bugs and ore and shit instead of monster parts. Hunt Shogun Ceanataur a bunch more times than necessary because he decides to give as few Cortexes as possible? Okay, I can live with that. Do an entire gathering tour quest without getting even one of the worms I need 6 of? Fuck my life.
