So, this game is out today! Feel like I've seen at least a couple other b8ers looking forward to it, so let's see if we can get some discussion going.

So far, man oh man it feels surprisingly good to be playing this instead of World again. Don't get me wrong, I do like World, but it ended up being a bit disappointing. I much prefer the feel of the 3rd/4th gen games, and it's a breath of fresh air to play them on TV for once. I've basically been using valor style exclusively so far (except for that Diablos urgent, where I went guild Glaive because there's no way in hell I'm using a moveset I'm unfamiliar with against Diablos, given how much hell that thing tends to give me...I used to hate Diablos but after seeing how bad World butchered it, I've started liking it, which will probably last until I get into G rank and get REALLY tormented by it) since its all new and fancy, its pretty neat for some weapons. Valor Switch Axe is pretty cool, its pretty easy to get into Valor mode and giving you powered up morph attacks really helps with the Swax's one big problem from a fun standpoint, which is the way it tends to be all sword all day. Valor encourages a bit more axe mode usage than usual, pretty nice change of pace, especially since they nerfed Energy Charge and by extension Striker Swax.

Brave swaxe is a lot of fun. Morph combos all day. And if you get really good with it, spamming the discharge is quite strong too, just hard to use. I think striker is still generally considered best even with the nerfs, but brave is so much fun who cares.

Brave longsword is ridiculously good. The counter is broken as hell but so satisfying. Brave hbg is even more broken.

I think alchemy hammer is supposed to he pretty good?

Its been ages since i played this though, and i have no switch to play on. Enjoy the crazy amounts of content though! And i hope your suffering through the first few ranks is quick, or you had a generations transfer.

Seriously the early game in generations is terrible

Yeah brave/valor long sword is something I need to practice, it seems like it will be fun as hell once I actually get the hang of it

Luckily I already put tons of time into Generations, so I could just transfer the save and start right at the high rank village/beginning of g rank hub quest and skip over the gathering quest hell of the first few ranks

World just came out on PC and that's keeping me busy, and by the time I get around to this Nintendo will be charging for online. :(

Still, it looks pretty outstanding! The amount of content is bonkers and styles look like a nice way of spicing up the traditional gameplay.

I liked 3U and original Generations well enough but really into the series with World. Im interesting if the loss of all the improvements World made would hamper my enjoyment of this one.

And...huh, from what I had read the timing was stricter than that, if it's actually easier than World then that's pretty much effortless, because foresight slash in World is easy cheesy

If I transfer a high rank save, are there any new low rank quests I should go back and do? Like any that unlock new meal/farm options for example

Coming from World as my first MH, the demo of this game felt fucking weird as hell to me. It feels very stiff and I miss the beautiful animations. :/

Woosh! I've gotten up to G3 already and making more and more progress! Gotta max out GRank first so I can start training and leveling my kitties properly. Not running beast yet even though I made one. My Boomerang kitty from Gen is doing well enough and is always a safe play.

Prowler mode never clicked for me so this is not something I need to worry about lol

There are multiple control schemes, you can change it in one of the menus. Cant recall which off the top of my head

ranged weapons undoubtedly got the best boost from world as far as usability goes. they've always been good, but something that required a bit more dedication to learn how to use well because it was truly awkward to control. bow especially.

it's been so long since i've played the older games that i'm not entirely sure what the best control setup is, and the way that they're worded in the menu is weird. but i'm *pretty* certain that i always used type 2 bow controls for the main setting.

it's something that should be pretty easy to find on a reddit post or something, though. if you can't, tag me and i'll ask some people that are more familiar with it.

to better answer your question, though: the aiming for bow is never going to be great. you can make it better than it is at default, and if you take the time to get used to it, it can work just fine. it's just going to take a little while

beast also doesn't have nearly as much damage potential as generations boomerang did. and boomerang itself got nerfed pretty hard in xx

sadly, cats are not really very good anymore. they can arguably be okay support, but monhun isn't really a game that wants dedicated support roles.

not that you shouldn't use it if you like it! i used gunlance for ever before world made it good-ish, and it was always bottom of the barrel.

just be ready for longer clear times and more frustrating grinding

I haven't felt the nerf really, maybe a SLIGHT damage decrease but the fact that Palicos gain energy so much quicker now almost makes up for that. I have a lot more bar to use on healing and always having my boomerangs out.

I heard about the nerf but it hasn't really felt that bad.

We cleared the G4 Urgent Valstrax in about 15 minutes with 3 people. 1 of the guys carted twice and the other was a hunting horn.

yeah i mean it's all relative. horn has never been good for damage output and if the other person is dying they aren't going to help a lot.

i know i definitely felt it though. going from clearing most things solo in 5-7 minutes to taking 10+

i honestly never noticed a difference with gathering energy. but i never really had a problem with it in the earlier game, though. boomerang cat only really uses two skills and it never took me long to get them up, and once they are they stay up for good.

IIRC fighting cats gather energy based on damage output?

edit: 5-7 minutes for single monster, non hyper quests, i should say

hyper monsters have tons of hp

One thing I'm not really a fan of is in palico rage mode when you evade it does a weird superman jump for your first evade, if you do it near an enemy you get a vault, but still, it really messes with your rhythm.

I don't remember this in Generations, definitely has to be a new thing.

was that a quest that was the bridge between high rank and g rank?

usually those quests do g rank damage but have high rank HP and I *think* defense modifiers to account for the fact that you wont have g rank gear yet

valfalk in general just has not much hp though. i love his fight and design, but he's pretty easy. i actually kind of enjoy that though. it looks and feels really cool when you just wreck his shit all over

Anyways yeah I agree. Two of my favorite monsters are Astalos and now Valstrax and both of their fights arent really difficult but are super fun still

Tigrex is great once you learn how to deal with it. I guess its probably more annoying in multiplayer, but in solo, it's always coming back to you.

Frenzied tigrex from 4u was a mistake though.
