A LOT of quality of life improvements. core gameplay is going to be smoother due to these improvements, but the monster fights themselves are lower quality, specifically comparing monsters that are in both games (also like 35 monsters compared to the 100+ or whatever that GU has)

Probably because I played World first, but Generations feels like the Chinese ripoff of World.

Like, everyone says this has more content and that makes it good, but man do I miss a lot of World's improvements and style.

World is similar in terms of the basic feel of the game, but it streamlines a lot of stuff, which is nice, but it also really simplified the combat in a lot of ways. You have way more freedom to dodge and can even roll backwards, while monsters are generally slowed down like crazy. There's some endgame content that can be tough, and you don't notice it too much on your way through the story because the monsters health and damage are a bit more balanced, but by the endgame you pretty much just stomp a bunch of wimpy monsters that can barely do anything because you're overpowered as hell. People like to say World just offers quality of life improvements, but that's not true at all. While it does have some nice QoL stuff, the gameplay is definitely more designed along the lines of a standard action game where you just kind of go nuts, as opposed to the more methodical approach of older MH games.

That said, I do like World quite a bit, it deviates from what I want in Monster Hunter but it's a good game in its own right. If the basic structure of killing a bunch of things and making them into hats appeals to you and you like how the weapons play, World is still likely to be pretty enjoyable. Especially if you like Gunlance, which is so much more fun in World that its almost impossible to go back to what it once was.

Alright, cool, I'll probably check it out.

I was kinda worried on which to play first, and went with GU since I play Switch more. I guess either way I'd feel like I'm missing something, either content if going from GU -> World, or QoL improvements if going from World -> GU

world has a ton of quality of life changes that make the experience a lot smoother/easier. also, the maps are all one seamless area with no transition screens.

combat feels essentially exactly the same, with some moveset tweaks and whatnot that are standard for new generations of the series. but the QoL changes just make everything feel better, and in some ways easier. classic monhun involves a lot of frustrating mechanics and things that are a result of old hardware, things that you learn to deal with, maybe even like in some ways, because the combat is just so good that you push through it. world doesn't have most of that, and is more accessible as a result.

starting with world and going back to older games like GU is going to be rough, as some of the people in this topic have pointed out. going from GU to world though will be a breeze, and it will make you miss those new features when you go back to the older games.

the big problem with world though is a lack of content. the game was built from the ground up. the engine, the monster skeletons/models/animations, the maps, everything. everything was done from scratch, and they put a *ton* of effort into making it all as polished as they possibly could, and as future proof as they were able to. they're going to be using this engine and these assets for at least a decade. as a result of all that effort, though, they weren't able to make a wide variety of monsters or maps or weapon designs. what content there is, is absolutely fantastic, there just isn't a lot of it.

think of world as a foundation. it's a great game, absolutely worth the money, and you can put hundreds of hours into it easily before running out of steam. but compared to a game like GU, which is using assets from the entire history of the franchise, world has probably a tenth of the content. world will be built upon for years to come, in the same way that the original games were built upon further and further until you end up with a product like GU that has thousands of hours of playability.

another thing world lacks is real difficulty. it only goes to high rank, where GU goes to G rank. world still gets challenging, and they've been adding more difficulty to the game since its release. but it's a different kind of difficulty than g rank is, which involves monsters getting new, harder to deal with movesets, faster movement, etc, whereas the endgame difficulty from world mostly just comes from the same moves hitting harder and monsters having more hp (which isn't really that much, because base endgame monsters in world have very low hp compared to classic monsters. speedruns for those monsters are almost entirely under two minutes, some weapons vs some monsters under one minute. compared to 3-4 minutes or longer for classic games)

right, maybe the hardest thing about behemoth is finding a good party if you aren't able to solo it (which, the world record speedrun is around 10 minutes, which means normal players will take at *least* twice that)

it's also an outlier and not really indicative of the rest of the game because it tries to emulate what FF14 does with its raid bosses and handles differently as a result

If you're not using cluster bomb shenanigans he's a serious problem to solo just because of health alone, plus the 35 minute timer. He's significantly more durable than Gogmazios, in a game where you have high rank weapons, and you get 15 fewer minutes to deal with (we'll say the rocks in area 1 balance out the dragonator/demolisher, even though those probably do more to Gog overall, at least if you take long enough to get every possible dragonator hit in). That's just silly to do solo, even if it's doable. And Extreme is obviously even worse. Even Lao isn't really any tankier than that, and Lao's entire gimmick is that you literally just beat on him unopposed.

yeah pretty much

and again, it's not that world doesn't have any difficulty, i might have worded myself poorly.

it's just a different kind of difficulty than the kind g rank games provide. numbers bloat alone is less satisfying than having to learn new movesets and adjust how you approach fights and whatnot.

Yeah that's my biggest complaint with World really, past a certain point it just runs out of ideas beyond higher health and damage. And while the elders at least get some nice toys to play with in Arch Tempered form (and Lunastra is actually a cool fight in general, god only knows what kind of hell her Arch form is going to be though), the regular monsters get jack shit besides higher damage that still isn't all that special anyway for the most part. Like you get a monster like Odoragon who is pretty cool but feels like he's more of an intro to combo monsters like Nargacuga and Zinogre, but then instead of tempered upgrading his moveset, he's still the same easily beaten down Odoggo he's always been.

yeah, it's unfortunate but it's honestly pretty much par for the course with high rank games. and especially given how much work had to go into making world, and how much time it took to animate the monsters, i don't hold it against the game too much. it's a foundation. an incredible foundation.

The fact that Lagiacrus got cut because they couldn't make his neck look right bugs me at times. Then I realize how fucked up the neck animations already are for some monsters (like Rathian) and I figure if Lagi was even worse than that, it must have been REALLY bad

i think they were afraid of rendering a lot of HD water or snow in a way that looked as good as the rest of the environments looked.

that was another issue with lagi, IIRC. there was really only one place it made sense for him to be, and it was one small part of one map.

Ruined Pinnacle is okay by me, most monsters don't go wandering too much on it so you're usually only going one area over. The Jungle is the worst map in the game to me, the interior is a bit confusing to navigate without a map and the mother fucking foliage...ugh. It was awful in the older games and its awful now. Got to love getting hit by attacks you literally couldn't see because the map has random plants obscuring your vision

it requires the right skill setup and proper use of certain mechanics to actually be able to stay up in the air like that, because each of those midair dash attacks requires a chunk of that blue meter so under normal circumstances its not something you can do indefinitely. requires some work and skill

yes, much more.

tonfas used to have a reputation as being OP, but that wasn't ever really the case. they did however get a good buff in the recent update. they still aren't the strongest weapons in the game (generally those are grerat sword, switchaxe and hammer i believe) but they are definitely very strong and really great against certain monsters (zenith giaoguru, that first video, for example)

they're pretty hard to learn and master though, as there's a lot of different things going on. kind of like charge blade
