Guys, I killed the Great Maccao

I am a hunter of monsters

Questions:
1. If a quest says Danger, does that mean the Great Maccao/whatever big monster will be there?
2. For crafting, do I actually have the items with me or can they be in my box?

1. Danger means something that isn't the target monster can show up (not guaranteed though). Generally if the subquest is to a hunt a given monster, it will always be there. You can get Great Maccao showing up on an unrelated quest, or some other big monster crashing the party when you're trying to hunt Great Maccao (bring Dung Bombs, hit a monster with one and it will usually leave to another part of the map soon after)

2. You can craft stuff that's in the box and have the items end up in the box. You can also craft stuff in your inventory and have it with you right away. No way to use stuff from the box to combine with stuff you're holding I don't think (definitely not on a quest, at least)

Well I wanted to hammer Lao Shan to death just like in my (on hiatus, maybe forever) Freedom Unite playthrough of earlier this year, but that didn't quite work out. Good to know he can actually destroy the fort in this game if not flinched enough, in FU he's so slow that you practically have to not even touch him for him to have time to do it. Then I tried Valor Bow, a style I've never used before, with my high rank Alatreon bow set leftover from Generations. Turns out Valor Alatreon Bow slaughters him with ample time to spare. Go team!

That feeling when you help someone out on their Lao urgent and use the same set you used to solo yours and it actually takes slightly longer

Granted I was focusing on breaking his shoulders for extra items just for kicks this time, but still. Helpful hint, don't use your high rank Nakarkos long sword and target the feet exclusively if you want to kill Lao

I don't know if anyone here knows this, but online multiplayer, lag and Tigrex combine for a very peculiar experience. There's something about Tigrex just freezing in place as he does his turn around charge, only to teleport across the map, that fills me with glee. Or is it frustration? I get those two mixed up a lot.

The only part thats RNG is what pattern of skills the cat can learn. GH explains pretty well here:

Final boss cleared and Hunter Rank unlocked! Not sure how I feel about that final boss, the gimmick part of the fight is better than I expected, just the standard fight is kind of annoying. Seems like every move it has involves starting to swing at you to make you roll, then pausing before retargeting and attacking for real. Plus the stuff it throws literally homes in on you from anywhere, which kind of makes sense but is still aggravating to get used to because of how weird it looks. I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually. I better, considering I'm probably going to have to fight it, oh, eleven billion times to make the armor and all its good weapons...

Now I guess I'm just clearing village requests to get any quests gated behind them, which conveniently also helps unlock anything that's gated behind a specific HR

yeah dromes are dumb. i liked the -ggis more.

thankfully frontier never makes you fight them except for when you get to g rank, and technically you don't *have* to fight them, but there are 3 quests you fight them in, each quest with a different drome in an arena, and if you do them 5 times each you can make and fully upgrade a beginner g rank set (which actually has good skills to start out g rank).

Not going to lie possibly the number one monster that isn't in GU that I wish was is Great Jaggi. I love that thing (and his poison and sleep inducing buddies too). Great Jaggi, Gogmazios and a Mohran are really the only things GU's roster is missing that keep me from thinking it's perfect

I actually think Arzuros would make the best first monster of the ones currently in LR Village 1-2 Gen/GU.

Maccao and the raptor -dromes are too small and fast, and completely unlike basically any other monster in the game except each other. Bulldrome is boring and Cephadrome is gimmicky and too difficult for a first monster (in fact, I think it shouldn't be in village 2 to begin with).

yeah, kutku is pretty solid too.

i never actually thought i would play frontier, because i never thought i would be good enough to handle the crazy shit it throws at you. it's definitely worth struggling through the language barrier though, there is so much really fun content. i'm only just now in g rank though, when things are really going to start getting crazy.

you get a taste of the crazy at the end of high rank, which many years ago used to be the end game content, so you have to move through some monsters that were intended for you to have rather finely tuned sets for, and things you would throw yourself at for a good while before figuring out because there wasn't anything after it. now, though, the real game lies in g rank, so most people don't bother wasting much time in high rank, and you go through those same quests without the gear standard they were designed for.

it was an eye opener for sure, and i can definitely tell my play is already improving a lot. g rank just cranks things even further though. not only do the movesets get crazier and harder to deal with, but now every quest lowers your defense for ever star rating over 1*. by 150 points each star. so basically, defense doesn't do nearly as much for you in g rank and you literally just have to get good. you can choose to lower the star rating of most quests if you want, but it drastically lowers your rewards and can cause you to get nothing on carves, so it's not a great option outside of maybe learning a monster you're struggling with. and even when you do lower the rating all the way down to 1*, the monsters still hit like a ton of bricks.

it's tough and frustrating, but also super rewarding when you finally manage to get the hang of it and are able to start handling what the game throws at you.

it's a shame that this will likely never be released outside of the west, even now that monhun is popular outside of japan. the game is 11 years in the making, and translating the whole thing take far too much time. and the developers don't show any signs of abandoning it for something new any time soon either. in a couple weeks, the game is launching an entirely new weapon type (the magnet spike, which looks super awesome). that's not really something you do if you're planning to launch a new game for a broader audience.

and another video that shows more of the magnet mechanic. or what i assume is the magnet mechanic. still not entirely sure how that lock on warp is going to work

although, watching it again now, i notice that you pull out a little gun and mark a spot on the monster. i guess that's how it works! you magnetize a spot on the monster and then you can warp into that point. crazy shit

and some crazy warp mechanics on top because it's frontier and so naturally the ridiculous is cranked up to 150%

i still need to try tonfas though. i hear they're pretty hard to learn and master

i mean that's pretty much all you need to know until you actually try to play it. it's a very accurate summary!

it's not actually that hard to set up if you actually want to play it if you get tired of GU or whatever. the JP version requires a VPN (most people recommend mudfish, which can be set to only apply to MHF and 3 dollars gives you over 25GB of data which would last a month of heavy play). there's also a subscription which is 1400yen a month, though the first month is only 500 (yen is basically 100=1usd, at least when it comes to buying webmoney cards on the internet). you don't need a subscription for the first 4 ranks though, which is low rank and early high rank.

there's also the taiwanese version which doesn't require a VPN and has a cheaper monthly subscription, but is about 9 months behind on content.

it also runs on toasters, ps4 (and i believe ps3), and i'm pretty sure at one point it was on the xboxes but i don't know if they still do

i'll be able to say for certain once i start moving through g rank more.

but as of now? in terms of content, challenge, variety, set building, it is! at the very least it's absolutely worth the 8 dollars it would cost to try it for one month.

whether or not you will like it probably comes down to how much you appreciate ridiculously hard shit. and giant AOE attacks that require some precise timing and positioning to dodge.

but there's so much content in this game. lots of customization. lots of great aesthetic stuff. the game is 11 years old and has continuously been improved, and still continues to be improved. that alone allows it to have a level of polish that the other game don't get.

all that said, the game is built on second generation monhun, so a number of things will feel dated if you aren't already used to them. improvements have been made of course, but it's still rooted on second gen.

the language barrier is definitely a challenge, but if you use the resources that are out there, and connect with other english players it becomes manageable.

the free trial period doesn't quite showcase how challenging things get, unfortunately, but you do get a small taste of it at the end.

yeah! i don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon so there's no real rush to play it.

just do be aware that unless you speak japanese, it's going to be rough for the first little bit, until you get adjusted to everything. to a certain extent, if you're familiar with how monster hunter menus and whatnot works, you will be able to grasp a good chunk of things without too much effort. but there *is* a ton of new stuff that you have to learn, which requires a good amount of poring over websites and using screen translation programs and cross referencing shit.

it was very very frustrating the first two days, i wont lie. but once i learned to rely more heavily on the resources available (which do a very good job of walking you through each step of the progression process), it has become a lot smoother and i don't get frustrated by it anymore.
