When gamers spoke up about them the BF team called them 'uneducated' and gave the 'if you don't like it don't buy it' line among other things. Gamers decided to not buy it.

I've noticed that people who use the 'if you don't like it don't buy it' do so seeming to expect that people will buy it and then get utterly surprised when people opt to do the latter.

No. I doubt that BFV could come out and then proceed to lose to a game that had only 4.89% of the vote. Even with Smash and RDR eating up the lions share BFV shouldn't have come in dead last and lost to a title like Fist of the North Star (which is going to have a niche audience at best) or Mario Party (Which people almost never put at the top of the list).

Ummm... No. It's not 'idiots'. Making a woman with a prosthetic arm one of the main characters is... well... About as blatant as you can get for SJW politics; especially with the responses give. But, more to the point, the thing that really killed it was the responses and attitudes.

As someone else pointed out; had the devs focused on things like what the gameplay will be like, what classes and options will be around, and so-forth they probably could have gotten away with it. However they decided to hype up the features which, not only would have 0 impact on people who actually wanted to play the game (since, ya know, no idea of the quality), but then slam anyone who didn't like their choices, treat them like trash, then give the dumb-ass 'if you don't like it don't buy it' line.

Let me put it another way. Let's say I wanted to sell ice cream. So I go down to the local park with my ice cream truck. The kids gather around and I promptly start advertising how I've got Ice Cream Cones saying 'Yankee's are #1' on the cone. When one of the kids says he's a Red Sox fan I tell him he's stupid. When another asks what ice cream flavors I have I say I've only got five but twenty different toppings including chocolate sprinkles, cherries, raisins, and wasabi... ohandchocolateicecreamiguess... When the kids, now promptly annoyed, ask what the other four flavors are and say that they are Sox fans, or Giants fans, or Tampa Bay Fans, and wonder who would put wasabi on their ice cream, I respond 'Well if you don't like it don't buy it!'. Do think I'd sell much ice cream? Had I just focused on the ice cream, the toppings, kept my cool, and maybe not even mentioned the cone at all I could have sold a lot more ice cream.

Even if every bit of the complaining of the SJW's was stupid and wrong, even if the number of people who would have not bought the game because of those things numbered less than two hundred, and even if the game itself was wonderful, the sheer mishandling of the PR would cause a drastic pain to the sales.

It doesn't help that it's EA whom are notiorious both for SJW antics (see: ME:A) and atrocious customer service (See: Star Wars) which is going to give DICE an even harder challenge. They needed all hands on deck to sale safe into port; but some of their people decided a political statement was more important, and we're now waiting to see if it makes it through despite it, or to see how epic a wreck it will make.

As someone who has family that fought in WW2, I care. I care that the developer of a series that I've enjoyed over the last decade has decided that the screeching of SJWs is more important than making an attempt at an authentic WW2 game. It's insulting when you get told that you're "uneducated" for wanting a game that wasn't based on lies.

Yeah, you basically described Gamerbro politics in a nutshell. Always freaking out about game developers trying to expand their audience, or who acknowledge that maybe people want to play something other than gruff angry white man. They claim it's "pandering to the SJWs who don't even play games" as if a few people on Twitter and Tumblr have any say in the game development process.

A lot of people are hiding their complaints behind a few guises, like "they chose to focus on this rather than the gameplay and that's why we're upset!" because cinematic video game trailers are known for being full of gameplay reveals (They aren't). Or similarly, "It's historical authenticity we care about!" because everyone freaked out about how ahistorical Battlefield One was, with the rampant automatic weapons in BF1, or the power-ups that turned you into a hero unit, or the story about the lone tank crew taking out hundreds of Germans / the horse rider in armor with a minigun clearing out numerous Austrian bunkers. (No they didn't.)

Nah, it's just reactionary Gamebro anti-SJWs freaking out because women are playable. Because that's the worst fate that could befall a game. They just use the previous excuses because it's a lot easier to sell those to people than to their real issues. Basically dogwhistles.

Even the developer's message seems blown out of proportion, unless there's another one that I didn't see. People always want developers to talk like real people rather than PR pieces, and then when a developer says "This is what we're doing, if you don't like it, don't buy it," people freak the heck out.

Yeah, it's idiots. I know the game is supposed to feature women and I don't care. The bionic arm or the dev comments, all news to me. Why would I be seeking this info? I know what to expect from BF. I'm quite certain the SJW comments were just as pathetic as anything the devs could write. The whole lot of them belong tossed under a bus. All I'm concerned with is gameplay.

I dont really care about the character thing tbh... what I do take issue with is calling your paying customers uneducated. Being that arrogant, especially when the people questioning you have a relatively legitimate gripe, is something that makes me not want to buy your product... also especially on top of the fact that you have a history of ripping people off .

Kinda disappointing because I wanted to buy the game but I dont think I will now

First off, the market that these people are appealing to, they don't exist. I mean, think about it. What sort of gamer would be like 'well this game is fun, exciting, with rock-solid gameplay and an engrossing story, all for a reasonable price... but the protagonist is a White Man. So instead I'm going to take this game that's buggy, simplistic in its gameplay, with a near-non-existent story, that's clearly at least $10 overpriced but stars a black lesbian woman in a wheelchair.' No gamer would. Now, I'm in NO way saying you can't diversify your cast outwards and have various new and different leads, but almost no one is going to pick up your game because of a feature like the ethnicity of the lead over something like story. However people WILL turn away from your game the moment they feel like, instead of attempting to turn out a good game, you designed a political piece and statement and are willing to insult your customers over it; especially if it came at the cost of gameplay or story (and especially if you focus on that over the other two).

Earlier today I was playing WoW in which my main is a female. Before that I was playing Fire Emblem Heroes where my team currently has three female units on it (Effie, Winter Tharja, and Veronica) in comparison to the one male unit (Hector). Before that I was playing Divinity II with both Sebille and Lhose in the party and Octopath Traveler with four of the eight characters being female and Ophelia's story being, arguably, the main one. That's just one days worth of gaming for me. Many, MANY, MANY games have female characters and female leads and, shockingly, people don't raise a fuss about them. In fact people are often happy to have playable/recruitable women. The whole 'men who can't stand to play as a woman' are a very tiny subset (after all; what if you're good with Chun Li?) whom no one in gaming takes seriously but cringes horribly at when the media acts like all gamers are like that... while said gamer is practicing their Samus for the upcoming tourney.

Gamers are FINE with women in games! We play plenty of games with female leads, playable female characters, female party members, and so-forth. Heck, people were MAD that FFXV didn't have a female party member! The issue here isn't that 'there's a woman in ma games!' It's not that at ALL! It's that it's a whitewashing of history to suit a political narrative and very disrespectful as such.

Even among the Soviets they weren't really treated as 'equal'. Sure, they did get assigned to the front lines, but typically in support or specialist positions (such as driver or sniper) as opposed to the more frontline stuff. Sure, some did, but most didn't.

Edit: And no side, even today, would willingly deploy a soldier missing a limb to the front lines unless there was little to no choice. Officer/support at most but sure as hell not to the front lines.

Women were by and large not a part of combat on the front lines, women have rarely played a major role in war anywhere in history, why, because they are small, weak, and generally bad at war. Men and women are not equal in all things and combat is one area where where women fall far short. I get annoyed at all media that tries to ignore that fact.
