https://www.abc15.com/news/national/ryan-gosling-defends-decision-to-omit-us-flag-from-neil-armstrong-moon-landing-film

Apparently some boring movie starring that bland, pretty boy douchebag will be omitting the American Flag from Neil Armstrong's bio-flick. Generic actor states that he likes the decision to omit the flag because the moon landing, despite being orchestrated and implemented by Americans, is obviously a human achievement, instead of an American one. Astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, has expressed subtle distaste for this virtue signaling decision. Despite the moment being one of, if not the greatest achievements in both American and world history, the American flag will not be utilized. Do you think this decision is moronic or justified????

It's obviously moronic when a major part of the landing is the US beating the Russians. And I say this as an Englishman with no investment in America.

I don't care about the American aspect so much, and definitely don't care about "disrespect", but I'm generally annoyed by "historical" movies that choose to change facts or omit details they don't consider politically correct (even ones that makes America, Americans, or our ancestors look pretty bad), so something like that would probably discourage me from watching the film just on the assumption that they'll probably omit or get other things wrong as well.

I think they did it for money reasons. they think the movie might not be as popular outside america, unless they downplay the patriotic parts. but yea, it IS dumb. people who downplay those parts are not realizing or ignoring some facts about the space race to the moon. the entire reason it happened was to compete with Russia.

it was a matter of national pride to be the first to land on the moon before Russia could do it. we actually didn't really have much other reason to do it and that's why the visits to the moon very quickly fizzed out and we stopped going and nobody has touched the moon in like 40 years or more. we got what we wanted out of it. we might eventually go back but only cause recent science has told us there might actually be some reasons to use the moon after all. like using it as a base for going out further in space. it will save money and fuel if we launch from the moon instead of earth.

Well, if you can name me a few examples of mainstream movies where Hollywood has actually led a full-frontal charge against US foreign policy goals, rather than simply held up a mirror to a mood of national self-doubt over an issue like Vietnam or Iraq or slavery, I'll readily accept that there are some directors and screenwriters at work in the industry (which still doesn't necessarily mean the whole industry) who are trumpeting a cause. Claims that Hollywood is "the enemy of the American people" sound like recycled 1950s McCarthyism.

You are the one spreading fake information. He said "I show the American flag standing on the lunar surface". You can see it, and the camera focuses on it, there is just no scene showing them awkwardly physically planting it into the surface, but you can still see the flag there standing there, as a result of them planting it.

The issue is that there's little reason to not believe they're ignoring the most iconic scene in the history of the event for no other purpose than agenda pushing. What other reason would there be to admit the essential scene other than to use it as a soapbox to root for globalization? It would be like making a titanic movie, ignoring the scene of the ship sinking, and then cutting to a still-shot of the ocean where it sank.

Yah because that would totally be a struggle.... Wasn't there a movie about a guy trapped under a rock flailing around for a few days? That worked fine. If you film it competently, you could transform the scene into that of a challenge and add suspense to it, you know focusing on Neil's struggle to get the flag planted...? But it's just easier to chalk it up to a human achievement, right?
