Because it would be interesting to see the (non-rallied) strength of new characters with gaming history + popularity from things outside of video games who have always been excluded from the bracket in the past.

For the record I don't think any non-traditional character has a shot against Link outside of an offsite rally in their favor, but that's fine, having Leonardo and Gandalf in the mix would still make R1 more exciting for me than seeing Knuckles underwhelm us for the 9th time.

(The other half of my noms are still going to new traditional characters though, I'm supporting most of the unique new choices the board has pushed for this year.)

I'm ambivalent about getting non-game-original characters on the front page, but either way there is a 0% chance of Bacon letting them into this specific contest. Geralt is the exception and not the rule.

You may be right, but we won't know until we try!

My take is, SB doesn't want a bracket flooded with superheroes so he didn't outright encourage their entry. This way if none makes top 128 in nominations he can say he didn't ban anyone, there was just a lack of interest. It's up to us to push for someone so we can find out one way or the other.

If Goku/whoever we pick does get rejected, no biggie, we'll still have plenty of time to slot in other (traditional) characters.

I just wish SBAllen wouldn't play coy with these things. He did the same thing with Mario/Sonic during Rivals where he kind of sort of implied they might not be allowed but after noms closed he said they weren't banned, they just didn't get enough noms. But of course they didn't. They didn't get added to the database, and no one was sure if they were allowed to begin with.

Who knows. Maybe he'll clarify his stance next week because this is Spidey's time.

I am also indifferent to whether or not we get an "all characters" contest, but Leon is right, if they're eligible then Bacon needs to say so. If we're gonna do this then we gotta do it big.

The problem with the "down with link/cloud" crew is thinking they are the only ones who noticed this is a problem and are trying to find solutions for it.

People have been trying to solve that since 2005, ffs.

I know we haven't had many contests since then, but it's been 7 years since Zelda won anything and (13 since FF did, but I get that the annoyance was that they were always finalists).

It's a shame no has gotten to see that OoT would've (probably) lost fair and square last contest even without massrally. And Cloud beating Mario, Snake maybe even Samus is almodt an upset at this point.

I honestly wish I could see Cloud win after Final Fantasy has underperformed in every contest in forever.

Oh, it was a massive upset in 2003, too. Nobody realized how much KH was going to matter. Once Cloud doubled Sonic, people started to entertain the idea he might beat Link.

But even since then, Cloud gets a decent amount of Guru support to win every year, even though he hasn't won again. I doubt anyone will pick him to win this year.
