It sucks it was rushed and incomplete but that was out of the hands of the people making it. If sucks even more that it was never completed. At least now when a game is rushed developers can keep working on it after it was released and give us their completed vision. The people making Xenogears were not allowed to do that.

As for my personal opinion on Xenogears. I remember it far more than most JRPG'S and for good stuff. The deficiencies it has did not impact me as much as the character development and narrative did.

Granted I played it first when I was 19 and was told the main draw was a deep narrative that can be convoluted at times. I was never told it was the best game ever, or better than most JRPG'S. I heard it was flawed but told a cool story. That is what I got.

It is because at the time Xenogears was being made Square had a rule that all projects must finish in 2 years. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these references, to realize that they're not just references- they say something deep about where do we come from, what are we, where are we going. As a consequence people who dislike Xenogears truly are unfortunate people who are missing out- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the reference in Fei's existential crisis with his alter-egos, which itself is a cryptic reference to Freudian ideas of the id, ego and super-ego. I'm smirking right now just imagining Soraya Saga and Tetsuya Takahashi's genius wit unfolding itself on my television screen. How I pity the ones who have never experienced the full joy of Xenogears.

I have been trying to say this myself too because of some of the people who disliked Xenogears thought it was all pretentious (which honestly gamers throw that word around alot, and they're just cheapening what it really means) didn't seem to get idea behind this game.

This game was made for people who do enjoy a good complex storyline that can make you think, you can't get that experience anymore due to the market now having changed for the worse.

This game was fantastic, and I remember it fondly as a kid. Hunted for a good complete copy for a few years. Total pain in the ass to find. Finally found a good one at $80 which is a fucking steal. I love looking over at it and remembering the great times I had playing it.

Was it brand new sealed? Did you buy it online? Or locally?

I ask because at no point has an opened black label Xenogears been worth $80, the highest it reached before the current time was $52 back in 2008. Though recently it has seen a steady increase in price and is currently at its highest price it has ever been at.

Bought it on Amazon maybe 6+ years ago. Advertised as complete, but when it came in the mail, the discs were missing. I was given a refund without question, and I got the discs from another seller on Amazon. Really worked out well.
