Was that really a rally? that match had only 39K votes. Granted the other ones near it in timing were high 20s/low 30s, so if thats a rally it was pretty small. Where did it come from anyway?

Yep, it absolutely was. Auron was winning handily early on in that match, and then L-Block came storming back to win. I don't remember where the rally came from, but it was absolutely confirmed to be a rally during the match itself.

Also, you can't treat Rivalry Rumble as an A + B = C type thing for anything. If it doesn't work for Red/Blue, it doesn't work for anything. RR is a useless metric for 1-on-1 because the voters are smart enough not to treat it like a 1-on-1, even with a pathetically weak anchor like K. Rool. DK wouldn't 60/40 Ezio like the round 1 match says either.

Also, DK would need more than a minor Nintendo boost to beat Leon. A minor Nintendo boost might not be enough to beat Tidus.

That may not seem like a big rally, but try taking 7000 votes from L-Block to get a rough idea of how he does without it. He probably would have been fairly close to losing to Ezio.

Well my point is just having a consistent base to compare it to. We have that in Subby/Scorp. And we have a weak anchor on both sides of DK and Leon. If anything the Anchor of Ada I think might pull more voters in to Leon than K Rool to DK, since we're talking 'real' characters with 'real' personalities. Maybe Leon/Ada isn't strong enough of a "rivalry" I guess? I'm not trying to use the RR to boost characters like Red because Red was clearly boosted by the presence of Blue. Same for Subby with Scorp but that doesn't matter for my point here. I can't see that being the case for either for Leon and DK.

And my point is that RR can't be extrapolated to mean anything in a 1-on-1 contest, period. It doesn't matter how weak the anchor is. Again, DK isn't 60/40ing Ezio, who has an even worse anchor than DK or Leon Kennedy does, which is why he did so terribly. A bad anchor absolutely drags the other person down. It's why Samus didn't do so well (relative to her normal standards, that is) despite Ridley not being that bad overall, really. Their 2010 performances indicated that DK and Ezio were very close in strength. The voters didn't treat RR like a 1-on-1 contest, so it's not useful for a 1-on-1 contest.

True, or at least you would think that'd be the case by now. It's just that my old philosophy for making one really bold call of some sort in the guru was that I'd rather have a 1% chance for something unlikely to happen than a 0% chance of actually out-picking everyone else who knows the stats better than me. If you compound that 1% chance with still having to beat out somebody else, that makes it feel just that much harder.

On the subject of rallies, I guess I should ask, how far does everyone see them going? Like, do they fizzle over the break? Do they take it all the way to Link and fail? Beat him once and lose on the rematch? Simply crush all comers? I imagine any of those are possible depending on the scope of the rally, but the last two are the most plausible unless it's just a really soft swell of voters coming in. My original set of picks, which I will probably amend, had Sans win his division and stop. That doesn't seem very probably, though.

If a rally successfully gets past round 1, it probably wins. The break's too short to stop them. Draven had nearly 40 days between his round 1 and round 2 matches, and that didn't stop them from being ready almost as soon as that match started.

I think it'll be tougher to beat Link 1-on-1, but it's hard to see a situation where the rally is strong enough to beat everyone except Link unless our vote totals spike up out of nowhere again. It's just too easy for a rally to take over the contest now, and it's getting easier every contest.

I would be amazed if Hat Kid rallied her way to victory. Then again, her game IS a pretty popular speedrunning game... I wonder if a prominent runner could tip the contest results?

Yeah, if we take speedrunners into account, just about anyone could potentially rally.

If you're going to argue for Hat Kid, I feel like just about anyone is rallybait. I mean, I guess she's more rallyable than others, but other than being cute, I don't think there's a strong enough appeal or community to dominate a contest like this. And this is coming from someone who adores A Hat in Time.

Why? It's already happened in a 1v1 match. I think it's reasonable to think that Charizard carried a wave of hype into the match and overperformed, but it's also possible that Bowser can simply lose again.

I'm picking Bowser because he has had alot of exposure in the last few months with Odyssey and *coughBowsettecough*. What has Charizard done for me lately? Sun & Moon? From all my friends that play Pokemon religiously they hated it, and Ulta S&M wasn't any better. It's running purely on nostalgia. This might just be the next rivalry much like Crono/Mario. I'm taking Bowser to even the series.

Pikachu is the face of the franchise. It's cute and has a nice color scheme so sorry Yoshi. It also had Detective Pikachu which even has it's own large amiibo.

Detective Pikachu > Yarn Yoshi.

It's not weird.

At a glance, Bowser and Charizard are the same character. If I said there was a large, fire-breathing dinosaur/reptile from the main cast of a prominent Nintendo franchise in a match, you wouldn't know who I was referring to. They look more or less the same on paper. To Charizard's advantage, Bowser is a villain, but Charizard isn't really the good guy so much as a sidekick for the good guy. To Bowser's advantage, though, he's anthropomorphic. He does things. Particularly in the RPG games, he has dialogue and personality. If all else proves to be a wash, being a MF'ing dragon is awesome, but all other signs point to Bowser.

OTOH, Pikachu is far less of a sidekick. He's the face of the franchise. He follows you, sans Poke Ball, in Yellow. He's omnipresent in the animated series. If I had never seen a gamefaqs contest, I would have assumed Pikachu was the #3 Nintendo character behind Mario and Link. (Yes, ahead of Samus.) Meanwhile, a sidekick is precisely what Yoshi is. He's Mario's horse. Sure, he's got a lot more going for him than, say, Epona -- like having his own minor games, a place in Smash and Kart, and a bit of personality -- but I don't think that's enough to outweigh what Pikachu ought to have going for him.
