Honestly, being that free of distractions would probably be a blessing in that regard. I'd be able to get a tonne of stuff fixed with two weeks of uninterrupted, undistracted practice.

What do you mean by a ton of stuff fixed?

Okay, I read through some of the posts and apparently a lot of people are under the impression this is impossible. Ill give that it could be hard for some people, maybe. But nowhere close to impossible, and Id say itd be actually easy for a lot of people. I go on week-long anti-social streaks where Id rather not talk to or see anyone. Even if you are not as extreme as me, this is no way as hard as everyone is saying it would be.

Sure it's easy to say that when you have the comfort of knowing you can do whatever you want, whenever you want.

If you're in a room with literally no objects, no form of communication, no sense of time other than some meals being served to you, no ability to interact with anything at all,you will go insane.

I do agree with this. It's different. When you're in the real world, you can isolate yourself. But you can also take comfort in knowing that you can still get human contact when you want. But being stuck in a cell where you literally can't have any human contact or anything is different. And would probably suck... Like a lot...

Budo requires constant practice to refine technique. Having essentially nothing else to do for two weeks would give me ample opportunity to basically just break apart every single kata and technique I know and analyze it to fix and improve things.

The only downside is a lot of the technique I'm working on that has the most to improve involves weapons, which I wouldn't have access to in this scenario, but even without a weapon available there are still practice drills you can do to improve things.

Well then there would be zero reason not to try. But then that creates a significantly different scenario where you know you can quit any any time vs being thrown in a room and knowing you will be there for two weeks.

You should probably add the stipulation that there is a rope or gun or something lethal in the room because there's no reason to not do this if your psychosis/paranoia/PTSD/depression/suicidality magically disappears after 2 weeks. I highly doubt anyone on this board would survive more than 5 days without killing themselves in that situation given the chance.

Imagine being so weak-minded that you believe youd be ready to kill yourself after five days of isolation in a comfortable setting, and presuming everyone else would be as well. Thats absolutely pathetic.

In what world is having a bed as the only object in a room for two weeks a comfortable setting? Where you have almost zero sense of time and how long you have been awake for? Where you are not given a single item to stimulate your senses? Where your voice is the only sound you hear? Where the only smells you smell are those of your own urine and feces and body odor? Where you have no interaction with any other living being? Where you have no idea what is happening in the real world with your friends or family?

Yeah sounds really comfortable.

Not that comfortable. At least, I know I wouldn't be... It would literally be torture. Bored out of my mind. Not sense of time. No natural light. No human contact. Barely any control over anything. How is that even comfortable?

I would give it a try. I think I could manage it. I don't need sun, I work nights and I am rarely awake when the sun is out. I get maybe a couple hours of sunlight a day as it is and mostly inside when the sun is out.

Granted I would hit a wall at about a week, but I think I could overcome. Would be incredibly difficult, but doable. I am excellent about keeping myself occupied. Nothing is in the room but we still have our clothes right? I could make puppet shows with my socks(ever see rocket man?), exercise, roll my clothes into a ball and throw it around, or just mentally keep writing my book, meditate, and sleep.

I've been laughing hard at the posts from that sodium guy. He's so silly. It's common for prisoners to spend months or even years in solitary confinement. Yes, many hurt themselves. But these are most often people who were already fucked in the head, already had their freedom taken away, are now being forced into an even worse situation and generally have no real end in sight or any sort of reward to look forward to. Yet they manage it for much greater lengths of time.

But this scenario is voluntary, short term and has an amazing reward at the end. Only the most fragile of minds couldn't handle this.

Yeah, honestly the more I think about it, the easier I think it would be. I would actually go out on a limb and say that there wouldnt be a single person on this board that couldnt do it, and even the most extroverty of extroverts would come out just slightly rattled at worst.

For the said reward, I would probably even do a minimum of two months, and maybe much more than that. I feel like there would be two ways I would approach this. Just dont even eat the meals given until necessary, get really tired, and just sleep the days away. Or try to be productive, Im becoming a gym rat these days, learn some more exercises I can do without equipment, and focus on that without any internet or anything else to distract me.

This might work for a day or two but after your circadian rhythm is gone and you have zero sense of time it won't be long before you start going crazy.

Having nothing to do is the least of your problems. You have no idea how long you have been in confinement and how much longer you have. I guess you could figure it out through when you get your meals but you would still not just be able to sleep your way through two weeks.

I actually take back what I said about adding some lethal weapon/device in the room. You're still fully capable of self mutilation with your nails and jumping head first off the bed on to the floor. So yeah, literally no one on this board would survive the two weeks (including me).

Spend two weeks in a 20x10x8 room, no windows, fluorescent lights you can switch on and off. No books or electronics or any kind of materials. Food and water is given to you regularly, but you cant see or talk to the person giving it to you. You have a comfortable bed and pillows and its whatever temperature youd like it to be.

In return you never get sick again. If youre currently sick, youre cured. No colds, no cancer, no STDs, no heart disease, no infections, no mental illness, no anything for the rest of your life. You can still die, but itll literally be because youre old, and itll be painless. No medical explanation, since you were in perfect health.

Unless you die in a car accident or something. You can still get hurt, just not get sick.

You cant use this power to make yourself rich or famous or anything like that. Normal life, but no sickness.

Dunno how badly such isolation would affect me, but I'm willing to risk it against a near certainty of dying as a vegetable. My whole family tree has contracted Alzheimer's by their 70s, and quite a few by their 50s. You guys are extremely confident that you could survive without basic necessities for two weeks. Prisoners in solitary confinement are still given some time out of the hole and time to use a toilet/take a shower, even go outside. And they're usually not stuck in that space for two weeks at a time.

You have no toilet or way to clean yourself in this situation. Your mind is the only source of entertainment/stimulation. But apparently all anyone on this board needs is a bed and a light switch to survive. Enjoy waddling in your filth and smelling your poop for 14 days.

I'm not surprised though. A lot of this board thinks it is okay with pressing a button to randomly kill 100 people around the world for a million dollars.

And this is why I'd definitely say no.

If I had a shower, soap, and a toilet with TP, then maybe I would give it a go.

However, I go stir-crazy after two days of sitting in front of the TV with no one else around. And that's with me cooking, cleaning, and running errands.

If I had nothing, I don't know what I'd do.

It's not uncommon for prisoners to spend months or even years in solitary confinement. And yes some of them get out. 1 hour a day, in a cage thats the same size as their cell. Some don't even get that.

The toilet thing is easy. Shit and piss on the food tray before sending it back through the slot.

I went 2 weeks without bathing before; I had broken my leg and I had a soft cast up to my hip. It wasn't pleasant but I did it

One can still bathe in a way: you get water. You got clothes. Use your shirt. It's only 2 weeks. Once to help get rid of the smell should do it. Get cold? Climb back in bed

Lack of toilet is another matter. 2 weeks with no toilet or toilet paper is a killer

Sure they are. They can be put there for years at a time. That's one of the most controversial aspects to solitary confinement that prison rights advocates are trying to change.

But moreover, the fact that solitary confinement is involuntary is part of why it's so mentally unhealthy. There's a big difference between voluntary seclusion and involuntary isolation. They've done experiments on a lot of torture methods (including the famous "Chinese Water Torture") and a lot of them only work if the person is constrained or otherwise restricted against their will. If you just have someone sit in a comfy chair and drip water on them, it's annoying but not much more.

This would be the same thing. Monks and other ascetic religious adherents have done things like this dating back centuries without it damaging their minds.

sodium-chloride posted...

This wasn't explicitly ruled out in the OP and it's against the spirit of what was being asked (basically you're supposed to be comfy, but isolated and with no external entertainment), so I'm assuming one is present.

....................not sure if serious

You can do some seripus soul searching while meditating in the dark uninterrupted. Parts of you that are unhealthy will die and you'd have a newfound appreciation for life at the end of the two weeks. If you would go insane, it would be because there is unhealthiness inside of you, and the next day will be better.

If you get "bored," observe those thoughts and ask yourself why you are bored. You'll begin to rewire your brain in ways you never imagined.

This isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. You'll end up with concentration you never thought possible.

Sounds like an amazing chance to meditate/reflect... not even seeing a downside.

....................not sure if serious

You can do some seripus soul searching while meditating in the dark uninterrupted. Parts of you that are unhealthy will die and you'd have a newfound appreciation for life at the end of the two weeks. If you would go insane, it would be because there is unhealthiness inside of you, and the next day will be better.

If you get "bored," observe those thoughts and ask yourself why you are bored. You'll begin to rewire your brain in ways you never imagined.

This isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. You'll end up with concentration you never thought possible.

You sounds like Sunny. Except worse... I can actually deal with Sunny... And it really is pretty bad...

No toilet. You have a bed, pillow, and light switch only.

Then I'll just shit in the corner like an animal. Or really just shit on the plate/bowl they give me.
