Short scene, yes, but sweet nonetheless. It's a great demonstration of Tarantino's irreverent tone, blackly comedic as yelling and upbeat poppy music plays slightly in the background. The progression of the weapon choice and Butch's subtle actions and facial expressions with each weapon really brings the scene to life, making it more meaningful when Butch finally sets his eyes on his final choice, the Kill Bill special. You can just tell there's a lot going on underneath despite at first glance being a simple, gut choice. With the choice of katana, Butch commits himself to a representation of honor, reflecting his choice not to leave Marsellus to a undignified end despite Marsellus being after him. Once again, Tarantino shows off his commitment to detail, reflecting his love of past cinema in the process.

54. The Long Take

Whilst certainly logistically impressive, as long takes usually are, True Detective's loses a bit of its luster due to me not really knowing fully what is going on. On the surface, it seems like some kind of drug bust that later turns into a busting of corrupt cops? Forgive my ignorance, but that's just how it seems to me. it's certainly an exciting scene nevertheless. Lots of moving pieces; I like especially when McConaughey escorts one of the cops out of the house at gun point, and just before when he knocks a shotgun blast out of the way in the knick of time as it hits another guy square in the chest. It's chaotic and intense, and I would definitely enjoy it more in context.

It's perfectly by design that Pulp Fiction ends with this scene. The non-linear structure of Tarantino's crime epic makes it so that the film ends in the same location it started, even if that's not quite how the chronological nature of the story goes. One of the most interesting examples of this is the presence of Vega, who we see get unceremoniously gunned down by Butch earlier, but in the context of the story, will happen later. Now, it may not seem like that connects much to Jules' iconic speech here, but the way Tarantino chose to end his film on such a relatively positive note despite the looming specter of death and tragedy to come is a fantastic choice and helps reinforce the idea that Jules has really changed. The reappearance of his favorite bible passage, now spoken with calmness and tranquility, is used to re-contextualize Jules' place in the world. Jules realizes in this moment how devoid of meaning his life as a criminal actually is, and how desperate he is to escape that life. It's a rather somber delivery of hope and escapism that leaves a thread of something better hanging just out of reach. So, Tarantino leaving his two protagonists alive, in brightly-colored clothes, leaving off on possibly the most pure deed they have ever done, encapsulates this perfectly, even if we as a viewer know what's still to come.

Even not knowing the full extent of the background to this monologue, you can just tell from Martin Sheen's powerhouse performance the pure care and powerful emotional put into this incredible scene. Set in the beautiful National Cathedral, I love how perfectly framed Bartlet is in the center aisle of the Cathedral. It's an amazing shot of purity & symmetry, offering tender welcomeness, an illusion shattered by both God himself and Bartlet's furious but softly-spoken rant at the almighty. It's one of the most harsh critiques of religion and faith I think I've ever heard, but I think it also hurts Bartlet to have to have these sorts of thoughts in the first place, his belief crippled by unfortunate accidents. Even without having seen the show, this scene is all sorts of human, touching the soul in all the right places and relating to one of the most prominent aspects of the human condition. And well, it ending with a Constantine-esque cigarette moment is just too perfect.

Great write-up. Definitely describes the scene in the way I've always had a hard time quantifying. I think you hit the nail on the head. It's also both an intimate moment and yet one with stakes that are encapsulating so many massive things. A vice-president. The Navy. Supreme Court nominations. Assassination. It's amazing to see two seasons of tribulations finally break this man and how he responds to it. I think the cool thing is that they treat Christianity with a respect here even in Bartlet's most faithless moment. The fact he speaks to God in Latin. Such a great touch.
