Amaterasu

Rating: 80/100

There's a sense of that gravity of legend in Amaterasu. There's a serene sense of myth to the very character, and her measured attitude combines with a lilting innocence to really make Okami a special, special game. Amaterasu is very much a worthy legacy character to the goddess of yesteryear.

Donna Troy

Rating: 23/100

So this fucking "superhero", Miss "What's My Origin This Week?", is an absolute bottom-tier Titans character. And that includes Jericho! And that includes her fucking husband! And that includes her little snot-nosed dictator baby! Donna Troy is very much the Jean Grey of the Titans. I think nothing ever turned me off more to the character than the "Who is Donna Troy?" story arc that eventually led to her being a goddess of myth and the freaking multiversal harbinger of the 52 worlds. So unworthy. She can't even lace up the boots of Cassie Sandsmark.

In the end, Ed suffers from being a slob. I just can't love the character in the same way I love Shaun. I know that makes me a bad person for bodyshaming and lifestyle shaming and whatever. But I just can't get on board with Ed in the way I do with Shaun. And that's too bad, because Ed is very much a genial, likable fellow. I call this Samwise Syndrome.

I don't give a fuck if he's not playable in Smash. Because the character is so devoid of meaty personality, fans have totally turned me against this guy. I already am generally against the design choices for Wario and Waluigi, after all. Those noses are gross.

Probably my favorite Sonic character, although that's not saying too much. Knuckles reminds me of a muscular Flash, for some reason. Other than that, there's not much to say. Knuckles is a Falco Lombardi-level supporting character.

Leopold "Butters" Stotch (South Park)

Rating: 85/100
Butters is easily my favorite character on South Park. Without question. His sweet innocence is a welcome tonic to the jaded cynicism of both South Park and the world at large. One of the most underrated moments of the entire series is when Butters drags Eric back to the bus when the class visits Frontier Village; his pure, focused energy is all devoted to not angering "Teacher", and it really stands as a unique attitude in comparison to the characters who either question everything or exploit anything.

I've never liked Yoda all that much, at least until the Clone Wars series. Once again, the Force sucks. The cookie cutter philosophies Yoda pushes on Luke in the OT are nonsensical and grating. Luckily, the prequels give more insight to how the character reaches his Muppet lifestyle decades later. I think, once again, it's tough to care about the Force. You can poke way too many holes in the concept.

PC Principal

Rating: 68/100

PC Principal really provides great insight into Trey and Matt, and it's those moments where both of them seem to be wrestling with a social movement for change that really make me enjoy South Park. They clearly see both sides of a hardline stance on progressive social change, and while I think too often they want to be centrist to a fault, the PC Principal was surprisingly deep for a gimmick character and ended up really overachieving based on the concept.

James Woods or not, this was a phenomenal burst of personality and an excellent way to modernize one of the oldest characters in human history. Give Hades the little brother syndrome worked perfectly, and I absolutely enjoy every aspect of this character. From his snake oil salesman charm to his unbridled rage perfectly encapsulated with the color change from red to blue, the construction of Hades is really well done.

The Riddler

Rating: 95/100
My favorite Batman villain by a mile, the beauty of the Riddler is how close he is to being a human. You could conceivably make the argument that the Riddler is a victim of society and that nurture could have changed his nature. Riddler is more brilliant than Batman, and in all actuality he better represents a foil to the character than Joker. Riddler and Batman are, at their cores, detectives first and foremost. But Riddler is able to lay the clues out for Batman to solve. Consider how difficult it is to create a mystery. The Riddler really is quite underrated and his amazing personality really straddles the "love me, don't love me" attitude that I think makes a compelling supervillain.

Rating: 72/100

As far as Green Lanterns go, I think Jessica sits at #4 among the Earth Lanterns for me. Sometimes #3. That's pretty high praise because each Earth Lantern is special in their own unique way. The storytelling that went on in Green Lanterns after Rebirth started was honestly especially excellent. Jessica was a character that easily could have been lost in the shuffle after Geoff Johns wrapped his Justice League, but Jessica has blossomed into a nice B-plus player in the Rebirth Era.

While the Gotham version of the character is quite compelling, the character is far too often just a miserable hyucking nabob without much merit. My vision for the character has always been that the character is torn between his heritage and his own ambitions. While the family has fallen from grace, the name drags him into the sewers while his goals are so pure of heart. And facing down the ridicule of an entire city thanks to his appearance is the extra weight that forces the scale to measure one side or the other. Instead, we get a goofy fucking nobody that never will reach the level of a good Bat-villain.

Kyle Rayner

Rating: 100/100

I know I suffer from the blinders of growing up in the Age of Ray Ray, but Kyle really touched something deep within me that no other Lantern can or likely ever will. Green Lanterns are all about having great willpower and being chosen due to their penchant for overcoming great fear. Kyle was chosen because he was there. And yet, over time, Kyle has demonstrated that sometimes creativity trumps any other emotion. Hal Jordan would use a boxing glove to repel an asteroid from Earth. Kyle would use a baseball player replete with an umpire and a home plate. John Stewart would make a crutch if he broke his leg. Kyle Rayner summons up two sexy green nurses to help him around. It's his wicked and irreverent mind that never stops moving that makes Kyle so great on first blush, but over time, you realize that Kyle is the voice of someone with fear facing the superheroes all around him. He questions running head long into danger. He wrestles with the morality of his actions. He doesn't initially care about or comprehend the legacy of the Lantern Corps. And, to me, that makes him so wonderful. Kyle has to grow into the role of a hero, while others seem to be born fully fledged to wear a cape and cowl. And that struggle makes Kyle matter.

Phenomenal in Infinity War, forgettable in Endgame. Endgame really isn't about Thanos though; that's okay. Somehow the follow-up sort of cost the character a bit of his luster. There is an argument to be made that Thanos' first death should have been the finish for the character, and that the plot should have left an empty feeling at his death. The closure fans get with Thanos is too... tidy. It turns him into a regular Marvel bad guy.
