i have to admit, chapter 5 felt sort of like "this is answer arcs? really?" as in it didn't feel it was progressing towards the game's climax

but chapter 6... chapter 6 feels like we are officially getting somewhere. there's no going back at this point. the standard "routine" has been broken.

though i have to admit, the chances of gohda and kumasawa (and nanjo) having a chapter where they get development and depth like all the other characters have... is starting to look low =/

trying to escape from this room with the rule "when the chain is removed, a collar will appear around your neck" and trying to re-fasten the chain from the other side of the door, feels like a baba is you puzzle

but will the marriage demons from the intro ever show up again and get character profiles?! if not, i don't have to rank them...

so the second use of golden truth in the game is elder-sister-beatrice telling new-beatrice "You used magic to create a golden flower petal inside an overturned cup. It was a splendid bit of magic."

well, that's, uh

not how i expected golden truth to be used

especially since it's, like... not true at all...? because magic isn't real, and new-beato can't use magic, and was just trying to do the trick while elder-beatrice's eyes were closed

in fact even the first time it was used i was a bit unclear what exactly the difference between red and gold even is

well, i'm being a bit harsh towards chapter 5.

it ultimately didn't really help at all

but it did promise to help, didn't it?

bern and lambda said they were running a game so that we could use it to sort of reverse engineer how the other games went. i.e. they'd show a mystery and show how it can be solved, so we'd know how other games went.

i thought this meant it'd use natsuhi as "this chapter's killer" to show us how a killer can get away with a crime and how they can show us imaginary scenes

but that wasn't it at all, and we left the chapter without solving the murders or learning anything new at all

but this chapter is way more on track to reveal answers, anyway

i want to write some words about the theme of this chapter is how superstitions and religion and other beliefs are being given a consciousness and brought to life but i feel a) i already have and b) i just don't have anything else to say.

but consider it noted.

oh. kanon in this episode is claiming that he is furniture created by magic.

geez, i thought that was an episode 4 only thing, but i guess we're doing it again.

anyway, apparently the brooch can only grant love to one couple and that's why shannon made it sound like a competition. whatever.

it's interesting that elder-sister-Beatrice (seemingly truthfully) says that she has no relationship with Battler

but she's the younger version of the Beatrice we knew from eps 1 to 4, who had a deep resentment towards battler

makes me feel the time loop thing is possible after all

But when you finish you can do the same to others =)

battler is being a jerk to new-beato, but it's quite understandable. to have someone who looks like the person you love, but has none of their memories or personality, and calls you "Father" must be painful

I understand that new-Beato is naive and young and stuff but she apparently read/watched the records of the first 4 games so surely she understands that Battler wouldn't want her to call him Father. And she should have a little more understanding of the context of all this. It feels a bit forced that she's still acting so clueless.

i like how the phantom of the old beato that battler conjures up is just constantly cackling with evil smiles on her face

okay, so, kanon and shannon will have to compete or something, to see which of them gets to have love from the brooch

meanwhile the marriage "sisters" show back up

and the bios tell us that they both like boys

and that they are both different genders

my, how "progressive" for a japanese game

but also, like, what even.

i won't lie, zepar's voice doesn't sound very feminine. but.

god this is silly

its like the more umineko changes, the more it stays the same

yeah we're moving forward towards a climax where the game's purpose and mysteries are solved

but have you considered maybe meeting more useless side characters involved in pointless romance plots?!

what a great way to spend our time!

interesting that the cousins were playing a card game earlier and talking about how george always wins and then battler said anyone can feel good if they've tried their best, even if they lose

and now the sisters are telling jessica she needs to try her best to win this competition against george or else she will hate herself later on

god this is so stupid

even though george and shannon are the ones who had the "brooch" which can grant love to only one, now new-beato will enter because apparently this is her only chance to ever have battler love her

and george and shannon aren't like "wait what do you mean beatrice loves battler, what's going on", they're just like "okay sure!"

george confronts eva over shannon, and evatrice magically appears to take eva's place

it's about as blatant an example you can get for how the magic in this game is always a metaphor for people's inner thoughts/feelings

EVAtrice is the metaphor for hatred and jealousy and immaturity - that's why she appears for kasumi in episode 4, and why she is used as a representative for eva in this fight

just like how MARIA showed up for real maria earlier when erika challenged her about the candies

of course we've skipped over the love demon trial, we can assume george won and/or that umineko is stupid so it doesn't matter anyway

well, i don't need to assume that umineko is stupid. i know it is!

we're going over the story of kyrie and asumu and the pregnancies

i like the throwbacks to ep4 - george is paired with gaap again, jessica with ronove. and kyrie recalls ep3 as she summons Envy, the most fitting stake for her situation

there are just so many murders that episodes 7 and 8 will have to solve

and we're adding even MORE now. eva is going to die in the VIP room... kyrie in krauss's room... and still 4 more...?

god i don't want to have to sit through 4 more of these fight scenes, but we'll see

i actually like this format for battler's game - murders happening one at a time, always with a pair of two characters who fight based on their stories and the love they are trying to protect

it's just... in terms of pacing... we're halfway through answer arcs and i want to get to... the answers... it's really not the time, imo. i'm not getting anything majorly new here from the characters. there's some added explanation of kyrie's situation, of rosa's situation, etc. but...

I just want to point out that episodes 5-8, despite wrongfully being named as such on steam, are actually NOT called Answer Arcs. They're supposed to be Umineko Chiru (lit. scatter/disperse in japanese), which has been translated as Core Arcs before. I don't know why steam decided to be dumb and change it.

Because it mirrors Higurashi, where they were explicitly called Answer Arcs <_<

That said, 5-8 are a fair bit heavier on hints and things that lead to answers than 1-4 are, so the term still "mostly" fits.

i mean, i worded it badly. it's not quite that. it became clear pretty quickly that she's supposed to be over the top. but she was still hateable in a way that you'd still hate a troll even if they say "LOL IM JUST TROLLING", because they're still annoying. But the more she's descended into absurdity, the more time I've had to sort of accept it and see some value in it.
