hachijo tells me, the player (okay, she tells ange) that the game won't continue until i think about how to solve the closed room

well, jokes on you hachijo/featherine, you can't make me. i can keep pressing space and it'll continue

and i couldn't even possibly begin to imagine how to escape from a room that only has one exit, and that exit is chained shut

you guys are the hachijo in this situation. do you want me to think about this puzzle before i continue playing...?

because i'm rubbish at lateral thinking puzzles

apparently i will only understand the answer if i try to think about it myself first

bold claim, umineko, i wonder if you can back it up

the fact is umineko has gone 6 episodes now without ever giving me a single answer to a riddle, and that means i still have no way of knowing if it can give satisfactory ones

the closest its come to answering a riddle is by telling me i was correct that ep3's final death was the result of someone not dying when they seemed like they did, then killing nanjo, then dying for real.

and that's barely an answer.

okay well no one has answered yet but i have been thinking about it

and i'm gonna sound like a lunatic

but look

there's no way for a human being who is in that closed room to be able to leave the room without touching the chain, which cannot be re-added from the other side

the windows are shut, the bathroom drain is too small, and the door is not an option.

so the way i see it, we need to think outside the physical ability to leave the room.

i have 4 options.

and no, they don't all make sense, but i have to start somewhere.

these are based on the fact that the stated red truth is "Ushiromiya Battler does not exist within the guest room" as the red truth

a) the body in there was not battler, it was a body double / twin / fake corpse. therefore, "battler is not in the room" becomes legitamate

b) battler's name is not battler and therefore the red truth is valid

c) battler does not exist. therefore, he is not in the guest room.

d) battler is erika. therefore, erika is in the room, not battler.

i'm aware c and d don't make sense. >_>

more random thinking:

lambda claims that the reason her and bern are so twisted is because they were forced to endure 1000 years of hell by being locked in a "logic error" purgatory

they don't say how they got out

could it be that part of the way they got out involved becoming as twisted as they are? i.e. sort of like selling a part of your soul to escape

they said they're the only two who ever made it out, so that's probably not what happened to beatrice

unless battler is beatrice and goes through 1000 years, and comes out as beatrice.

but "I am not you", so...

@Zyxyz0 , I don't think your archive of topic 5 is correct. It seems to be stuck on 10 posts per page, so it covers page 1 to 10 out of 49 pages.

checked it out, looks like there's a new and exciting bug in how gfaqs pages are downloaded that was making ff capture them in a logged-out state somehow?? but I found a way around it and reuploaded with the fixed versions, so it should all be there now (though still looks a bit wonky due to missing scripts somewhere, and I had to go into inspect element to remove an emoji from one of the messages on page 2 since it was breaking the download for some reason lol)

anyway, apparently bern was a "piece" who got locked into a logic error hell, and then became a witch when she got out

again showing the line between what is a "piece" and what is a "real" meta person is very blurry

I'm happy they're trying to justify Bern's awfulness with a backstory I guess but meh

I do think this sets up a big new layer of the story though

Could someone else be currently trapped in one? What if Beatrice or Battler are in a hell right now and that's what the entirety of Umineko is? etc? What if me, the player, is in this hell, and I get out when I solve the game?!

either way, this is exactly how twists are made. misdirection. you're told the only three instances of someone being in a 1000-year hell are bern, lambda, and now battler. but if someone else is revealed to be/have been in one...

i mean i won't even rule out the idea that this game is about me, the player, being in logic error hell as i try to figure out why the game exists.

this game has been incredibly meta from the start, with battler's inner thoughts constantly saying what me, the player, is thinking.

and it's gotten even more meta this chapter with the introduction of Jo and Featherine - the game is literally talking to me as if it knows that I am in Ange's situation, with a playthrough topic being watched by people who know all the answers

So could the game be about me, the player, being in logic error hell? Yes. It could be.

it doesn't really make a difference - theoretically the other room has the window seals intact as well and that's not the answer. this is just a different way of saying no to it.

saying the only way to solve the closed room now is by revealing the greatest riddle of the story

a riddle related to beato, which will kill her (for real? really real?!) when it is revealed

apparently, if they use the trick that can save battler, "part of beato's heart will be exposed"

and beato was... "born from the rules"

so it'll involve changing a rule of the game...?

if beatrice's intent all along was for battler to win, then what the hell was the end of epsiode 3 anyway? what would've happened if battler signed the contract at the golden land? why did beatrice and virgilia get all evil? i wonder if it'll even make sense in the end or just be glossed over

it sets up big stakes, but then it ignores them

people "die" "for real". "this time they're truly, truly dead, there's no magical way for them to return" and then they keep returning

as beato asks the love demon sisters why the duel has to happen, we get some major foreshadowing for some sort of twist

i can't guess exactly what is going on here.

but in order for a world to be born, you need two people

and right now we have four lovers

but we need to go "up" to 2

option a) is that there's something we're not understanding about life and death. right now, all 4 lovers are alive, and 1 or 2 will die. but what if "dying" doesn't kill you, and in fact... brings you to life...? then, if 2 die... you will have 2?

but that's weird.

the other option is somehow something about people's souls, and uh, people being... the same person?

i've speculated before if battler is beatrice. not that that makes any sense, lol. but she said "I am not you"

it's actually a pretty beautiful scene if you look at it out of context

the golden rose garden, this beautiful soundtrack, the poeticness of the guns flying into the air and it being left to chance who grabs the one with the bullet

a really interesting scenario

and ends with both of them putting the guns to each other's heads, and knowing who is about to die

but the real question is, how does this help solve the closed room?

what is it about beato's heart, about how beato/the rules is involved in getting battler out, has anything to do with love needing 2 full souls...?

and apparently beato now gets erased, because ???????????

umineko has always been bad with the intersection of its meta-narratives and gameboards but

like

this beato was literally created by battler to replace meta-beato

she's supposed to exist outside the gameboard. as beato. not as a piece.

but she was used in the game as a piece, carrying out a murder.

and now she can "die" because some in-game demons (aka, zepar and furfur are just pieces, right?) are killing her?

meanwhile zepar and furfur, who exist as pieces on the gameboard (they are part of battler, the gamemaster's, explanation for how characters are dying) ALSO are simultaneously existing outside the gameboard, at the marriage

beatrice, as she "dies", asks 'mother' why she loves battler
