Ah god I can finally gush about how much I love 2-5. Nagito is so amazing and his flawless "murder" mixed with how he employed his luck is legit genius and unlike anything else I've ever seen even in the broader mystery genre. Such a treat to experience.

Just watching the comic book part was mesmerizing. I kept seeing Nagito make it crazier and crazier each step and not believing he went that far.

Figure prices fluctuate pretty wildly depending on what you're looking at, but most are somewhere between $150 and $250. I think these were actually on the lower end despite being super nice.

If you're interested in getting them now, you'll have to look around the second hand markets. Figures typically go on sale up to a year before they're actually ready for delivery and often sell out well in advance of release day. (Some get reruns to coincide with other happenings in a given franchise but this is rare.)

Chapter 0. Because I guess we need a flashback chapter to understand this clusterfuck.

Nagito is talking to someone, and somehow he is not the bigger jerk of the conversation. Is it Hajime?

Did Nagito had Junko's hand transplanted to him , or something?

Oh this was pretty short.

A Monokuma announcement, and more glitches. I guess we are stll in the simulation?

It's Hope's Peak but every room besides the gym is blocked by weird glitches. Okay.

The main cast will arrive? Oh that would be cool, hope it means the DR1 cast.

I guess it's info dump time. Finally. Oh, and the investigation song plays. All we need is a murder now.

We suddenly teleport to the 5th floor. It's like Monokuma just turned on all the cheat codes for this game inside a game.

My Pigimi just gave me an egg and then rolled out. I guess the cycle starts again!

We go into the dojo, the only room that is open. There is a manga on the floor, about the history of HPA. Subtle.

I guess the difference between this and the 1-6 investigation is that we are not really making the last epic struggle to defeat the Mastermind. We are just being railroaded by Monokuma. I wonder when the actual moment of rebellion will come.

And the manga reveals jack shit. Of course.

It seems the random objects from DR1 now give 4th wall breaking lines when checked.

Ok now we get actual plot. The Ultimate Hope murdereda bunch of people, and the school tried to conceal it, which ended up making te reserve course students, and later all of humanity, revolt. Makes sense.

Hajime is now doubting 13 people died in a school when he just watched 10 people die in an island. I hate how skeptical those characters are, sometimes.

Manga #3. Explains the Tragedy in detail. Its more or less what has been implied so far.

So Junko was the big bad all along. And she manipulated all reserve students (minus Hajime) into killing themselves. But now she is gone, and yet Ultimate Despair is still going. What is most interesting is that she managed to do such in a way that the school headmaster didn't notice, so that later on, he invited her to be locked in the school with the other students.

Now, one thing missing from this story is how the Ultimates from the other classes died. Assuming they did, of course. For all I know there could be a bunch of other batches of 16 players waiting to be put in killing games.

So the FF was made from HPA graduates, in order to fight Despair. And I guess they found the 15 students from the game and sheltered them.

An older Hyoko. Plot twist! Was she the mastermind? I knew there was something off about that Junko-like hair. They should just kill anyone who wears bear hairpins, tbh.

And the Ultimate Hope who killed 13 people is also an old looking headmaster dude. Wut?

We are now walking on the ceiling. Welcome to Stone Tower Temple.

The plot thickens. The DR1 cast tried to save the Remnants of Despair. Because Makoto is a shounen protagonist like that.

Info on the simulation. Apparently it's not supposed to be used for anything but psychotherapy. Huh.

It's like the glitches keep getting worse.

Sonia is talking about placebo effects and doesn't know why. Huh.

Of course Chihiro is behind everything. Who would have thought.

So this was supposed to be a simulation of the entire world, but we are playing the beta instead. And there is a virus, who is probably Monokuma, fucking up with it. And Chiaki and Monomi were really programs, in the end. We are Megaman Battle Network now, only navis are badly voiced bunnies.

Makoto appears. With some juicy intel. Apparently they were watching everything. I can just imagine Kyoko screaming the case answers to the screen. He set the 11037 password because he was afraid of Monomi/Chiaki going rogue, and now it's our secret weapon against the virus. And it seems there is really a person responsible for everything. Are they from DR1's or DR2's cast?

We need "more than half the people" to initiate the shutdown sequence. It's going to be a trial isn't it.

Monokuma's announcement screen is the same as the one from DR1.

So we are having a trial now. Sort of. More like we will expose all the plot and then decide whether to leave, stay or maybe try to hijack the game's shutdown sequence. Sort of like 1-6's second half, the one after we solved the murder. Sounds a bit anti-climatic, but I'll wait to see.

Ok so I hope this is not one long sequence of Akane and co. going "NO WAY" while I struggle to hammer the plot into their thick skulls. If I have to do a rebuttal showdown over whether The Tragedy happened or not I'm gonna flip. These characters' skepticism is something that really hurts the series sometimes.

1-6 worked because the trial was about a murder, and once the plot exposition started, it was less trial and just answering simple questions. If we are just going to have a trial over plot details I already know, it makes me aprehensive.

"Cuz it's a game" is my new favorite meme.

Fuyu: "You better not say we're fictional characters." Lmao.

We are winning a case by agreeing with Monokuma. Okay.

So Hiyoko had a growth spurt. That somehow refers to my questioning about the DR1 cast noticing anyone's bodies changed. At least they adressed in DR2 that here by having the simulation reset their bodies' states. But it's making DR1's plot kind of suck in retrospect.

Yeah, we're going for the "if you die here you die in RL" trope. I'm still going to hold onto the hope that Chiaki could be rebooted or something. I mean, Alter Ego is alive again, right?

The scenario is Matrix now.

They are not dead, they have turned into vegetals instead. Fuyu's "WHAT THE FUCK" reaction is the most appropriate one this situation. That's pretty dark, devs.

I like those song variations.

"So Chiaki was an NPC?" Fuyu, technically all of you except Hajime and Nagito are NPCs. Fuck, even Monomi is playable in her own mini-game.

THE DR1 CAST IS HERE! "Cue Smash memes". FUCK YES! Now this is going to be a fun trial. Give me Kyoko, Byakuya, and Genocide Jack, plz.

Omg we'll have to figure out which one of the DR1 six inserted the virus, right? This gun be gud.

Oh it's not just Hajime who is evil. Everybody is. Interesting.

And we get our title drop. "Goodbye Despair". The whole simulation was a setup to de-despair the DR2 cast.

"Kill us all" is the silliest hangman's gambit word ever.

Is Makoto the only one from from DR1 who will participate? Laaaaaame.

Hajime and Mokoto agreeing makes me notice how they have exactly the same face, lol.

Makoto wants us to graduate. This is obviously a trap. The real Makoto wants us to do the 11037 thing, instead. This Makoto is probably another virus. What is like is there there is probably some cool twist to this already cool simulation twist.

"..." as the winning option in a videogame. lol.

Monokuma dropping the one email that destroyed his plan is kind of dumb.

Makoto is actually Monokuma. What a teeeewst!

Phew, we barely dodged a lawsuit from Square Enix. Thanks, Kazuichi!

A Giant Junko. Ok, gotta give it to them for the originality.

There are other name hints tho.

Another similarity between Chiaki and Chihiro is that both of them have kanji numerals in both their given names and last names, with the numerals in their first names both being chi, which means "thousand".

(and Chiaki and Chihiro both share a birthday)

Junko is the kind of character who would get too annoying if she kept appearing all game, so we get her in small doses each time. And it works greatly. Such an interesting character.

So Junko is now an AI. I was thinking Monokuma was just looking like her, but no, she really exists, and might as well become the villain of this series indefinitely, if she is not deleted in DR2. Cool. She is basically Lucrezia from Girl Genius. Evil, intelligent, can be uploaded onto anything, and turn anyone into her cultists. I hope she doesn't have access to time travel too.

Oh, so that's what the bomb did. It was the time it took for Junko to fully hack the game. Crap.

Or more like it was a self-imposed timer, just for fun. lol.

Junko has a few new faces. The cartoon rodent one is the best. On the flipside, she seems to have fewer mood changes, and most of the faces she uses are normal. Meh.

Hajime is suddenly a good character because this endgame cast is inferior to DR1's one. He's the only one who is doubting things.

The game forces me to pick the wrong option, then Real!Makoto stops me (it's the real one this time, right?).

This was a mass body steal plan. Cool. Looks even more like Lucrezia.

I'm lowkey assuming Fuyu will just grab a gun and pump Junko full of lead at any moment.

Even the murders were necessary to make empty shells Junko could upload her brain into. Man, this is as creative as DR1's plot, I'll give them that.

Makoto is really the Ultimate Hope. He yells "believe!" and they believe it.

EVERYBODY IS HERE! At least, the two best ones. Could still use some Genocide Jack, but you can't have everything, guess.

Byakuya did not get fat. Everything is well.

Man, are you sure leaving the other 3 to take care of the computer room or whatever is a good idea? They are all dumbasses.

"Losing monocoins" is one of the options for what can happen if they shutdown the program. lol.

The third option sucks, so now they have to find a fourth option. TV Tropes calls this Unpoken Plan Guarantee. If you want to win, you have to do that without revealing your plan to the audience beforehand.

"Surveillance caramel". They're not even trying anymore.

Oh, so THIS is why this game resembled so much the DR1's killings. In order to psychologically manipulate the DR1 cast. Neat. And the DR2 cast was into it. Double neat.

Wait, there's a mastermind? Is it DR1 or DR2?

No, it's Izuru Kamakura. A completely new dude. Unless it's suddenly Nagito or something.

HOLY SHIT, it's Hajime. My Evil Hajime theory is right, after all, but in a completely unpredictable way.

Man this game just keep dumping despair-inducing reveals one after another. I get it that it's the game theme, but it's getting a little forced. It's hard to believe those kids can ever overcome that now.

Darth Hajime looks pretty badass, though.

Hajime.EXE has stopped working again.

Something tells me Chiaki is about to appear and save everyone.

lol at the Imposter wanting to introduce himself. And what's up with that voice.

Chiaki.EXE has come to rescue. YES!

The Ultimate Despair has been overcome by the Power of Waifu.

Why does the climax of the game involve stretching a thing that looks a lot like a penis? *_*

Super Saiyan Hajime has been unlocked. And you thought only Taka had this mode? Hajime has it too, and he's not a dumbass like Taka.

"That's wrong!" is the final argument of game. This is the new Objection.

This is so anime.

And it's over. This ending was kind of weird and barely made sense. I guess the characters just hoped Junko into oblivion, and that allowed them to start the shutdown sequence without turning into Despair. Or they partially turned into Despair and will now have to struggle with it? Whatever. At least it sounds hopeful, and even hints they might revive the dead ten.

For all it's worth, this game improved the ending of DR1, because it finally explained what Junko is about, and told the series' whole backstory. So I guess I'll see it to improve DR2's ending too.

Anyway, I'm going to make my character ranking, then move to DR3.

Anyway, this was a good game. Mostly better than DR1.

The mini-games slightly improved overall. Non-stop debate is more interesting thanks to the agreement mechanic. Hangman's gambit sucks but not anymore than the first one. Logic Dive is not amazing but it's fun enough. The comic book one got better. Rebuttal Showdown is decent-ish most of the time, though it can become terrible if the player fails to upgrade their sharpness. BTB got much worse. It's very hard to hit those buttons, and I just spammed Fever Time all the time. Maybe we'll have a game with functional gameplay by V5 or something.

The cast is overall better. The bad characters are much better than DR1's bad characters, the middle ones are somewhat better than DR1's middle, the top ones are on the same level. But this game kills the top ones before the ending, so the endgame cast is one step or two worse than DR1's.

The plot is more outlandish but it's well written. I'm not sure what I prefer. DR1 has a little more simplicity so its more elegant, DR2 had a few moments where it could have jumped the shark, but it didn't.

The cases follow the same pattern, they are more ambitious which makes them a little more illogical, but they work in the end. I guess a ranking would be something like 2-5 > 1-4 > 1-5/6 > 2-2 > 1-2 > 2-4 > 2-1 > 1-1 > 2-3 > 1-3.

I didn't even rank 2-6 in the previous post because I'm not sure it can be called a case. It's the equivallent of 1-6's second half. It's just plot exposition and talking, there is no actual murder.

I didn't dislike it though. I like Junko, and AI Junko improved the character for me. And the tension was pretty good. It's just the lack of explanations in the end that bothers me.

But yeah the survivor cast sucks. Fuyu is a great character but he is the straight man, and the ones who are supposed to be interesting are mediocre to bad.
