Being in this scenario at all is already evidence that the system has failed. Otherwise, why wouldn't they try to get this obviously guilty man? (Hint: it's because they don't think the system will work)

lmao like we always joke about how you can only climax with fantasies about murdering the poor, but to actually come out and say this is something else.

To be fair, I don't think I'd actually give them that much credit.

I'd argue it's not because they don't think the system will work, necessarily, as much as they're worried about what would happen to their own positions if it does work.

Which isn't better, to be clear

So just to be clear, I assume you guys that are in the "The ends justify the means" camp are okay with cops falsifying/planting evidence?

To get drug arrests, or for theft? Heck no.

To get someone that they KNOW is a murderer or domestic abuser? Sure

But how do you KNOW??? And who decides that??? usually you dont know, and no one should decide that. I dont trust the system. Not a single part of it. Its a case by case basis.

I can simultaneously hold the opinions that we shouldnt have the death penalty, but a very few hopeless criminals should be put down.

Even the worst among us have basic civil liberties that shall not be infringed upon. One of the most basic of these is the right to a fair trail. That means no agencies employed by the government shall bear false witness or utilize fraudulent evidence. If a cop cannot prove his case with the evidence he or she has, then they have no case.

This is the liberal position btw so I am very surprised to see so many come out against it in this topic...

This is only a hugely important right because we view convictions as something that leads to purely punitive measures. If we had a philosophy centered more around rehabilitation and community service, it wouldnt be so critical

It would be just as critical. What are you talking about?

The government cannot just make up evidence to get the convictions they want regardless of what the crime is or what the punishment for that crime is. We have a right to a fair trail, be that a death penalty case or a case for jaywalking. The government cannot just get the verdicts they want by having their agents use whatever means necessary to get them. This is...I legitimately cannot believe these are points I need to defend.

(Although I do agree with your overall point that it should be more focused on rehabilitation than punitive measures, especially for non violent offenders.)

What Im saying is that if they DID, and it resulted in someone legitimately dangerous being convicted, I wouldnt be too chuffed.

I think this would be an extraordinarily stupid move if Republicans didn't intend to pressure further if necessary, which makes me think they are willing to pressure further.

Why give Democrats the "Trump defying a unanimous order of the Senate" piece of ammunition if they aren't willing to go all the way and completely turn on Trump if this blows up further?

Now, I think the more likely outcome is Trump caving and a return to the status quo in terms of Congressional allegiances, but I can't see any reason for Republicans to do this other than to actually take a hard-line stance on this issue.

The swing voters literally dont matter. Its all about progressive voters being excited and showing up to vote. If they show up to vote (see 2008), its a landslide for the democrats. If they arent excited and dont show up, republicans will win.

Swing voters having any real impact on an election is just a myth to attempt to make candidates more moderate and centrist.

To continue on some "stupid Watergate" parallels.

The Watergate burglars actually got away with it the first time. It was only when one of the transmitters was defective and they went back the second time that they got caught.

Also Nixon announced he'd release the tapes... in what turned out to be a heavily misleading release.

~~~
I also imagine that Pelosi wants to drag this process out as long as possible a la Benghazi for maximum damage as well as being able to investigate as fully as possible. On other impeachment timelines we're still a ways off on the final impeachment vote and trial.
I still don't get why the left is celebrating this. The man is still going to be president, will still appoint judges (and maybe even a SCOTUS justice), and if anything will just abandon any bipartisan legislation like gun control. There is no practical reason to be happy until November 2020 (if Trump is defeated).
