Just look at what all the kids are playing these days. They have their Call of Duties and Fortnites which involve killing each other using various forms of weaponry.

Real men plays shit like Kirby where you eat up your enemies and Mario where you jump on your foes in order to defeat them.

People sure did think so in the 90s, at least.

And Nintendo has been embracing the lewd game scene while Sony are actively pushing them away.

My housemate is BIG MAD about the Switch at every opportunity and scoffs at the idea of me playing it.

He was PISSED when he found out about Witcher 3 being ported, and didnt understand when I told him that people value portability over all else.

But he also thinks Breath of the Wild looks and plays like shit, so idk what to do with him.

This. Strictly first party titles are the most kid friendly of all publishers. Mario and stuff. I would say that it's a good thing tho

If he played it, he probably gave it 30 minutes and quit.

He thinks Smash is a deeply flawed game because he played Roy and damaged himself a little with Roys neutral special and said that the game gave no indication he would be damaged, and that it shouldve, despite the fact that half of the appeal of smash is that 5-9% Damage is virtually nothing that wont hinder your changes /too/ much, or that he couldve just not used that move.

Ill just leave him to his yearly CoD and NBA games. He likes those for some reason.

AND if you would like to play third party games, years after they launched on another console, at full price... well... then you can do that too.

Old school games coined the term "Nintendo Hard." Many first party games counted as such. Hell, they threw together a whole different Super Mario Bros. 2 just because the real one was considered too hard.

Not at all but Nintendo has always been the "family" consoles. These ports you talk about are on other platforms. All consoles are really judged on are their exclusives and Nintendos are mostly family.

Not sure why folk care if a game is ported to another system unless they actually own the system. I'm happy more folk get to play The Witcher and admit I'm impressed they managed to get it on the switch. Sure it's a downgrade but still good. As for your last point I personally don't care for portability.

Well the average age of a "gamer" now is in their mid-30s. I'm pretty sure striking the glowing weak spot isn't exactly rocket science at this point. That sort of thinking wasn't already baked into us as reflexes back when we were 9.

I was excited to try it, but it's very very very easy and just didn't seem to have much depth to it compared to things like Odyssey, who I got bored. A small child would probably dig it though.

The latest Zelda game literally looks like all the characters and objects are plastic toys.

Let's not forget about the strange "yarn" phase they went through with those Yoshi and Kirby games.

I don't mind there being family-friendly games for kids and adults who love bright colors and childlike aesthetics........but I really wish Nintendo would make some darker experiences for other gamers.

Astral Chain and stuff like that is a step in the right direction, but as of right now....all the good mature games on Nintendo....are ports from the other consoles.

And seriously. Where. The. Fuck. Is Metroid Prime 4?

But I dont mind Nintendo being less dark. I get dark from the other systems. Might as well use them for lighter games. Fun and family friendly. Stuff like that...

I absolutely ADORED Twilight Princess.

Probably the last Nintendo game that made me genuinely excited. I played the shit out of it. 100% completion. Got all the bugs and ghosts around the world.

No offense to Zelda fans....but everything after Twilight Princess was a step back in the design department. Just my opinion, but I stand by it.

Samus Returns for the 3DS was pretty awesome as well. (That ending suggested a Metroid Fusion remake/sequel as well!)

One that I'm REALLY curious about is Shin Megami Tensei V. That will certainly be mature....and seems to be a Switch exclusive. But maybe it's only a timed exclusive.

So few genuinely dark, difficult, and mature games that are Nintendo exclusives. Kinda makes me sad.

But that's not what the console is all about, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Mario Party 27. Kirby's Epic Cooking Adventure. Zelda's Music Machine. Yoshi's Dance Studio. Luigi's Bubble Bath Baby Bear (Where you play as Luigi's pet bear that loves bubble baths).

Just seems to be Nintendo's forte.

There have been Rare exceptions (pun intended) with offerings from Rare, RockStar, Suda51, etc., but these are mostly known to gamers. To the general public, Nintendo means chibi mascot games for children.

The Tetris craze sold lots of GameBoys to travellers, the Wii Fit fad sold lots of balance boards to moms, but both were short-lived, leaving the detritus of Pokemon cards and toys for elementary-schoolers.

Sure, it is part of the reason Nintendo has stayed relevant for so long is they know they have to appeal to a younger audience while also keeping the older crowd happy. That is why Mario, Yoshi, and Kirby exist. They still have their adult oriented series though, like Zelda and Metroid (yes, Zelda has always been adult oriented, even the games with a more cartoonish style like Wind Waker). Not to mention when they bring in other studios to make M rated games for them.
