We have been getting a bunch of posts about FF14 lately, so lets consolidate it in one topic.

Post your world / data center so we can get some CWLSs going. Also just whatever else is going on for you in game.

Since a lot of people arent at endgame yet (myself included) please be mindful of spoiler tags. When you spoiler, give a hint at how far you need to be in the story to click on it safely.

I have zero MMO experience and most of the community acronyms still go over my head. (And seem silly in general.) Im playing almost solely for the impressive display of worldbuilding and excellent soundtrack, but some of the story beats and characters are starting to click for me as well. Im liking the game more than I feared to say the least, though I do wish the Trusts system were available far sooner because much as I havent been minding doing dungeons with parties overall, Id still prefer a more traditional experience.

Im presently involved in the level ~40 main quests for A Realm Reborn, so I have a long way to go. And with Pokemon around the corner (and maybe Jedi: Fallen Order too) its going to be a long time before I reach the end of Shadowbringers. It doesnt help that Im infamously glacial at RPGs and very much like it that way. My friends Kiria and Thom resubbed to the game recently since Im playing it for the first time. Theyve already amply passed me by with their new alt characters!

Just started picking up Savage a few weeks ago. Should have E2S down tomorrow.

I used to play as recent as last Spring. Got myself up to a lvl 50-60 Archer to go along with my lvl 60 Ninja.

The fetch quest grind right after defeating Lahabrea in the main questline killed any excitement I had for the game. I cut ties shortly thereafter.

Yeah the big problem is it's so hard to sight read and it comes right at the end of the fight, so you're putting in 9 minutes at a time to maybe see 10 more seconds of the fight that might not even teach you anything because it kills you so fast. At least Titan puts all the hard stuff at the beginning (and that fight is really fun)

At the risk of repeating something you have already heard Heavensward could have been its own FF game and it would be among the better ones.

Wasnt a compressed version of ARR content supposed to occur with patch 5.1?

I recently wrapped up 2.5 and am trying to clear some of my quest backlog before moving into Heavensward content. Might look into at least doing some of the Crystal Tower and Binding Coil as well, though I dont know that I have the time to get too into raids. Also Im a PS4 heathen. =P

Yeeeeep. I pug raid and this was my exact experience with 2. The DPS check is so tight (or at least it was at launch) and it's literally a make-or-break segment after 9 minutes.

Didn't clear the last two fights before my sub ran out (got to smokers in e3s though which is something) and it'll be harder to clear now so idk if I'll continue raiding. But I am looking forward to the EX trial this patch!

Definitely do Crystal Tower. Binding Coil is worth doing at some point for the story but it's outdated content that no one does anymore. What you'll need to do is get a premade group together to go through it at max level.

Also I'm a PS4 heathen too so don't worry. I used to be on PC though and I miss my DPS meter.

Crystal Tower isn't particularly difficult nor a big time commitment. It's not like 25-mana WoW raids in the slightest -- plus you can probably just get carried anyway lol.

This is oddly timed because I was just about to make a "help me decide what class to play" coz a friend and I are about to start FFXIV

I don't really understand the base class and then job thing going on, seems like they made that unnecessarily complicated. Can you just keep leveling up the base classes or do you have to specialize?

Yeah it feels like more but there are only 3 Cycles per fight(5 Quietus casts).

I'm not even sure each Cycle even takes 5 seconds, the speed caught me by surprise the first couple of times.

Your base class just kind of turns into the advanced job it isn't really any sort of drastic change.

The class/job thing is basically a weird holdover from the awful 1.0 version of the game. Essentially for story purposes you are starting as a weaker form of the traditional Final Fantasy jobs, and then as you become more powerful/important you get a fancier title, but for gameplay purposes it's a linear progression throughout; you're not actually specializing.

As an example, I started as lancer, and then at a certain point I got the dragoon job crystal so now I'm a dragoon, but it's all the same story as you do the class/job questlines.

ExTha, if you've played MMOs before, which role do you like -- Tank, melee damage, ranged damage, or healing?

Barring that, just pick whichever one you like from classic final fantasy jobs.

Tanks:
Gladiator --> Paladin (sword and board; "thankfully my shield will protect me")
Marauder --> Warrior (battleaxe'em a question)

Melee DPS:
Pugilist --> Monk (everybody was kung fu fightan')
Lancer --> Dragoon (lances and jumps, with a nice dash of edgelord)
Rogue --> Ninja (50% more daggers and 100% less hand jiving than Naruto)

Ranged DPS:
Archer --> Bard (bow and arrow; sadly, no smacking people with lutes)
Thaumaturge --> Black Mage (you cast the spells that make the people fall down)
Arcanist --> Summoner (Why dps yourself when you can outsource it?)

Healer:
Arcanist --> Scholar (Summoners who get sick of their teammates being idiots and dying all the time)
Conjurer --> White Mage (Both act and look like a special snowflake! Big fat heals though)

These are the classes --> jobs that you'll have initial access to before getting to level 50, which then provides a few more options to pick up if you are ready for a change. A couple of notes:

-I think you need to hit level 15 in another class before you can start as a rogue?
-Arcanist does branch into two different jobs. Because of the weird way EXP works in this game, EXP you get as a summoner will also translate to leveling up scholar, and vice versa! This is the only instance in the game where this happens though.

Don't feel married to whatever you pick first if you don't like it. Changing your class is as easy as equipping a weapon of another class, once you have access to it. Each class and job does have its own unique questline and side story, of varying quality. I main Monk and have been pretty happy with mine. Dark Knight is widely regarded as the best, but that isn't open until you get into the first expansion.

I will say the standard summoner complaint in that it actually is not what you'd expect from the standard FF summoner. The pet management aspect is kinda bad and it's more of a dot class. You have smaller summons that you kinda let poke the enemy as you "charge up" your two bigger summons. But you don't get the big summons for a long time.

Not necessarily bad but not what people expect.

The Nier raid dungeon is really cool but I'm crushed I have to wait 6 months for the second part.

The actual story portion of it was surprisingly light. Usually raid storylines don't get interesting until the second portion but I guess I was hoping for a bit more meat since Yoko Taro is involved.

The first portion of the alliance raid storyline usually doesn't contain much. Expect a larger introductory quest to the second.

Cleared the new extreme trial. It's ok but there's an absurd amount of downtime that really drags it out.

80 GNB/ 79 SMN, started the new patch content but didn't get far yet.

I took the plunge... I think it was two months ago? I was barely playing video games anymore, but I'm pretty happy with my time.

Ironically, I've always found MMOs are most fun when you play them alongside friends you have outside the MMO. That's why I wanted to get this topic going since it feels like XIV is becoming the new MMO mecca as WoW wanes.
