imo, instead of looking up all mechanics, ask someone who's done the fight if there's anything that isn't easily discernible and/or can cause a full party wipe due to solely your mistake

like who the fuck is gonna figure out what nisi is, even after both healers spontaneously explode near the end of the fight. it isn't gonna wipe the party but it is very unclear and you won't learn what it is even after dying to it. telling a new tank in the first shb trial to not cleave the party with divination rune is also probably the only advice i'd give to a new tank there, cuz one comes out RIGHT at the right time late in the fight to just full wipe.

something like e4n? go totally blind, one competent tank and healer carry the entire fight because no enrage and relatively low damage. e5n i just tell them HOPE YOU KNOW HOW LIGHTNING WORKS LOL because it's also pretty self-explanatory. 6 is trivial, 7 just requires a personal brain expanding epiphany, and 8 can just be follow the leader.

most fights don't actually require too much movement, so the lower damage tradeoff for that mobility is fine imo

i tried to play machinist this expansion but I literally don't have the ping to play it properly so I had to give that up

No I'm playing on mac. My settings aren't the minimum, but iirc I lowered them from the default; my computer's only like a year old too.

i can tell you about how badly its been nerfed, which is true, but it still isn't good.

remember, if you're on PC, the "/" key can be used to toggle "walk". some monsters have to be walked past, or you'll wake them up and they'll be mad. if you're on PC, uh good luck i don't know the control

Melee only does more damage because the devs have slowly flattened the penalties for missing positionals and then boosted all their damage with the rationale of "well they'll miss uptime due to mechanics" and then not actually designed fights that reduce uptime significantly because that would be obnoxious. and then melee loses to SMN/BLM anyways.

basically ranged gang for life, whiny melees crying about uptime and positionals can fuck off

Limited time-event, unfortunately. It's possible they might rerun it at some point as they've very infrequently rerun events in the past, but only during really low subscriber periods.

didn't even play DPS at all until i got around to levelling my sam to 80 a week or two ago, have been almost entirely sch with the occasional pld

but sam is actually fun

unlike smn

i havent actually played it much since they changed it in like 5.1 but still, it feels entirely too rigid for my tastes. meanwhile sam just has to burn gcds every minute just to force things to line up

pld is kind of rigid, but it's flashy and cool so it gets a pass

Tanking in Normal content is as simple as making sure your aggro generating skill is toggled on, occasionally using mitigation to lessen the damage from tankbusters, and making sure a boss is facing away from the rest of the group in case it has any cleaving attacks. With very few exceptions (like the once in a blue moon occasion where you have to use tank LB3), it's only once you get into Extreme/Savage content that you need to worry about mechanics like swapping aggro between you and the other tank, or using your invincibility skill to survive certain death raid mechanics.

So The Maker's Ruin really is like the WoL's theme. This slow version in Shadowbringers is pretty cool. Of coursw the version against Omega is still the best. And finally watched the cinematic and it's the hypest.

Yes, trust is typically super slow but they are 100% on mechanics.

Trusts are awful if you actually know what you're doing. They do not AoE, do not pull multiple packs, and do mediocre damage. On the rare occasions I've tried doing Trust runs of dungeons it's routinely taken me twice as long as just doing the dungeon with randoms.

Trusts were better when the content was fresh. They still were exactly as slow as they are now but they were still faster than waiting around for 15-20 minutes in DPS queue only to get people with mediocre gear who also don't know the dungeon yet.

Now not so much, though I still do brand new dungeons with them my first time through to hang out with the gang and take my time to sightsee if I want. Do not use them to level.

First time having to level an alt DPS. As tank and healer it was pretty quick to spam the highest level dungeon. But for dps, how to pass the time while waiting for queues? Or what would be the best way to level

While waiting for DPS queue i usually do the daily hunts and random fates in lakeland.

You can also just do zone quests as well. They are worth a bit of XP and you can do them pretty quickly

This is 70+ btw.

For lower levels i just spam floor 1-10 on PoTD and 21-30 for HoH. Queues are pretty instant especially HoH

If youre gonna level rdm then youre in prime spot for quick easy leveling. Just get to 61 doing daily roulettes and grind HoH until you hit 70.

Do beast tribes. Especially for 70+, the Pixie tribe gives an absolute shitload of exp. Way more than past tribes did. They're definitely worth doing.

Honestly very glad it's like that, too. The birbnado is super cool to do even if it's baby easy. Plus that break is sorely needed after finishing E6S so Shiva can stomp on your balls repeatedly while you're fresh instead of totally frazzled lmao.

Also this is definitely not true this tier

You can cheat Rakta into near full uptime if your tanks are ballsy but Shiva forces seven disengages just before add phase, with way more after that you cannot cheat. Melee absolutely are paying tax this tier.

Work at home solved this problem. Just doing my job while the queue pops.

Agreed. Just to note, we had never made it past the first rotating segment because we'd only reached it twice and were half-blind pulling. Once we drilled which corners to go into and the orb order, we did it basically flawlessly. And then the colors segment, only one person messed up on the first one and we were fine on the rest, despite actually never having seen it before. And it looked NEAT.

What I do think is ridiculous is that the entire last minute is just nothing happening except the occasional aoe, and it's not even a flurry of intense aoes like e4s. Why not just cut the boss's HP and make enrage cast directly after one or two back-to-back aoe after the last mechanic? It feels really weird for the fight to "end" at like 15% HP left and it not be a wipe.

Hell, the first TWO minutes are also boring where nothing is happening. The fight could have been shortened by 3-4 minutes and been made better for it.

The key word there is "significantly." Losing a handful of GCDs there isn't enough to send melee's dps plummetting down to match ranged. If there was an effective "melee tax" you would expect both melee and ranged melee to do the same DPS. And obviously SMN/BLM are DPS gods this tier but SAM still manages to compete with them.

like the entire crux of my argument here is that that even with melee having less uptime, melee can STILL do more damage overall

It's based on small sample size, but I feel like ever since ShB the third fight of a tier has been considerably easier than previous third fights. E3S was certainly easier than O3S, E7S is easier than O7S. I'm guessing it's part of Squeenix's ongoing strategy to get more people raiding - if the end of the tier is easier to reach maybe more people will push to finish the tier.

Or this could all be anecdotal and I'm full of shit. Who knows.
