I think I'd argue that it is a good reason for games such as League of Legends where most of the time you're forced to play with other players, and if the fanbase is vastly toxic then that will kill a lot of the enjoyment.

That's another point. Undertale fans came together and did something for their game. The consequence was the tainting of a contest which is a bad thing. But they didn't have bad intentions.

Butthurt anti-voters on the other hand, have bad intentions AND taint the contest. They're worse.

To be fair, Undertale had 0 chance of making it out of Round 3, some would even say out of Round 2. So at the very least, some anti voting "may" have made it lose a little bit sooner. That's hardly the same as it going all the way to win the contest when it otherwise wouldn't have had a chance.

Sure you can say the anti-voters intentions are worse, but the effect was very small in comparison if that's even what caused Octopath to win.

To taint the contest, the outcome would need to matter in the first place. It's the influx of smug rally participants that can get annoying, and even that isn't too different from how the on-season always was.

Because that's not what happened. Some people did that. But even more saw a longshot joke pick and thought it'd be funny to brigade it to the top when under normal circumstances it'd have a hard time getting past round one.

I remember a topic like that on (of fucking course) the League of Legends board. "Undertale is our new troll pick! Let's troll everyone again!" But I'm pretty sure the rally mainly came from people who liked Undertale but weren't regular users here.

What they did is turn off a bunch of neutrals like myself who otherwise may have given the game a chance from wanting to play it, I understand that comes off as petty but I just get annoyed whenever that game's name comes up now. Good riddance.

Not all of us think that way. Some people genuinely want to see how matches would play out without outside rallies. Of course the odds of that not happening in a contest these days are slim but that doesn't mean everyone is ok with rallies if the game they prefer wins. I won't blame anyone for counter rallying, but really I'd prefer if there were none.

Some of you people take these contests way too seriously. Sans winning a character battle is a far more amusing and entertaining result than Link. If anything it makes for a much more interesting story and makes the contest better, not ruins it.

From an administrative perspective it's to drive new traffic, but from a user's perspective, what's the point of holding a contest here if it's not decided by GameFAQs? There are tons of similar contests on other sites if we wanted to participate in a contest decided by another site.

I'd vote for Undertale over Pokemon. Pokemon is boring. Mario World is the shit though, I'd vote that over most things. Super Mario Bros. 3 is even better though.

It's implied by being held on this site that it's supposed to reflect the opinion of this site. That's why the front page used to say "GameFAQs has decided that ____ is the best [whatever]" at the end of a contest. That's why rallied contests had more tortured statements like "thanks to the legions of League of Legends fans, Draven has won our character battle". I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea. It's not supposed to be ~super exclusive~ but it's supposed to generally reflect the opinion of the people who visit GameFAQs.

The site dying is irrelevant to this. I don't know why you keep trying to bring up things that only really matter to the administrative/financial side of the site.

My understanding is that the site's still doing well as a whole. The front page doesn't get as much traffic as it used to and some of the boards are dying/dead, but the site is still profitable, just not a behemoth like it used to be in the early 2000s.

Nevertheless, I don't think there's much retention from rallies. Most don't even stick around to vote in the next match.

The only reason contests still happen is because @SBAllen occasionally gets blasted AF on cocaine and randomly decides to set up the whole thing. The next day sees what he did and is like "welp... might as well make a topic on B8 announcing it". These benders have become less frequent over the years, and so have the contests.

I didn't make this topic trying to get to 500. For some reason people want it to get there.

This was intended to, and achieved to, prove that anti-voters that made Undertale lose against Octopath are just as bad or worse as Tumblerinas when it comes to corrupting contests on the site.
