I didn't know there was so much lore behind gamefaqs contests. So essentially Undertale has done well in previous contests, so people were voting against it out of spite and that's what led to the upset?

Can anyone explain what happened with Fortnite? I thought that game was crazy popular and yet it got yeeted hard by a game that's just Breath of the Wild for people who don't have a Switch. I'm guessing it's another case of spite towards its popularity exceeding its actual popularity.

Multiplayer only and battle royale type games aren't really popular on this site. I'm sure there was some sort of "it's popular so i hate it" sentiment from some people on here, but I don't think it was the majority opinion.

Basically, the voting base in gamefaqs is fairly old 30+ somethings, so if a game isn't a franchise started in the 90s it won't do super great here. Not to mention people are at the age where they'll antivote things that are popular with kids.

Also, measures were taken to keep outside sources from rallying in the current contest, so it works as both a reduction of non-gamefaqs votes and a deterrent for people going outside for rally votes

Undertale, taken in a vacuum, could be considered a top 5 game of the decade legitimately, certainly better than OT, Horizon, and most of that section of the bracket.

So yeah, I'm a bit bummed cause I had it going far.

I don't think things are as black and white as either being ok with all rallies or against all rallies. Reasoning matters, the way it's gone about matters, the effects of it matters.

Now I personally don't like rallying, but I also would be ok with counter rallying if it was going to prevent a result that ordinarily wouldn't happen.

Seeing it fall in round one should have been expected. It is certainly not the game of the decade. Not even close.

Which has never been the point. Octopath is even further away from being Game of the Decade. The point was and still is that the anti-voters are still a product of a rally that happened almost 5 years ago. The rally ended but it is still manipulating votes. I know that having tens of thousands of people vote solely on a game's merits is extremely idealistic, but I would still like for the rally to stop having the influence that it has. Anti-voters may think they're bringing about justice but they're just more mindless tumblerinas bound by said rally.

I also don't think Undertale deserves to win the contest, but for fuck's sake, 5 years later and it is still dictating outcome of matches.

my opinion: "you either like all rallies or hate all rallies" is black and white thinking and it's something I want to avoid personally, I don't think it's hypocritical to like one rally and not like another and I think it's okay for peoples opinions on rallies to evolve over time, I do dislike draven's win more personally because of people spamming welcome to the league of draven moreso than the win itself, you can dislike a rally cause your favorite lost but that doesn't disqualify you from discussing nuance

I have not played octopath but i have played undertale. TBH, if you asked me before this topic I could not even tell you what type of game octopath was, what platform it came out for, or when it released. Can i see Undertale being the better game? Yes. But can I see octopath being better based on playing Undertale? Also yes.

The difference in like L-block and something like draven/undertale is that people didn't come in to the board and brag about their rallied character/game the whole time. Like who is bragging about Lblock. Sure some people were upset, but eventually most people got on board.

I have talked in length before about the undertale fandom and fandoms in general. Undertale's in particular has a very hard time grasping that their game, for like a very small section of time, was very popular and now it's just kind of a game that people acknowledge sometimes and a lot of the times it's not even the game but the fandom. While it still has some reaching influence (Sans got a cameo in smash but at the same time Joker got in as a character so you know), it's doesn't have the staying power of established franchises or other games dubbed as "GOAT" in years past.

Another is that the Undertale community also can't seem to come to terms that their push for the game to get people to play it contributed its polarization. It would be one thing if they were like "Hey, this game is neat and different maybe you'd like it... i do." But it was "you have to play this game, it changed my life, it made me a better person, I was so moved, you'll love it. Visit my tumbler for more" type stuff that was going on.

TL:DR - Undertale's Age relative to the type of game it is, lack of people caring about it on this site, weak contest strength without a rally, etc probably contributed to its loss more than any anti-voting as only a small subset of voters who frequent this board probably care enough about that rally to begin with to have any anti-vote intentions and I'd guess a lot of them actually wanted Undertale to win a match because they had it winning at least 1 round.

Yeah I actually had Undertale picked to win the first two rounds as well. Didn't hurt me as bad as Fortnite tho. I had that one pegged for division finals but I guess I overestimated the amount of middle schoolers on GFAQs.
