I suppose it's also worth mentioning that when you have a massive cast of young talent on a show giving them national exposure, it shouldn't be terribly surprising when a portion of them become stars.

It's also a case of, when you have extremely talented kids who are desperate (or their parents pushing them) to be stars, they're always going to find some way to try and achieve that. A lot of the kids applying to be on Mickey Mouse Club in the first place were always going to be people who, even if they didn't get on the show, would likely have found other ways to get into the spotlight.

Case in point - Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys originally auditioned for MMC and got accepted to be on the show before he wound up going with Backstreet instead. He already had multiple rods in the fire, as it were, and just went with the one most likely to pay off.

Also, by context, I know who some of them are, but I don't recognize them.

The ones you'd probably be expected to recognize (even if only by name and context) are Justin, Keri, JC, Britney, Christina, and Ryan... aka, Justin Timberlake, Keri Russell (Felicity, The Americans, lots of movies), JC Chasez (from NSYNC), Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Ryan Gosling.

Nikki and Marc are borderline cases - Nikki DeLoach was in a girl group (with Britney Spears, before Britney went solo), then became an actress (she's mostly been in low-tier stuff, with cameos in shows like CSI and more major roles in a bunch of Hallmark Channel movies), while Marc Worden did a few minor TV and movie roles but then moved into voice acting and did a fair bit of stuff (though most of his work falls under the heading of "Additional Voices").

No real clue what happened to most of the others, though some of them went into songwriting, and have that sort of "You don't know them, but there's a chance you've heard their work and don't know it" sort of cred going on. And I think the one girl is currently touring with En Vogue.

I still don't know JC Chasez and Keri Russell, although I'm familiar with what they're famous for. By context, I assumed Justin, Britney, Christina, and Ryan.

Just rewatched it and Ryan is the only one I can look at it and see a resemblance to his later self, although part of it might be the hair for some of them and there's also the matter of the video resolution.

Almost five years after the fact, I learned that WotC's MtG forums closed down.

https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/wizards-coast-community-forums-be-shut-down-2015-09-16

It's a bit of a shame. Back around 1998-2003, I loved that place. It might have been the first internet forum I was really active on. I think I dropped off either 2006 or 2007, a few years after I'd really stopped playing MtG. Then when I went back to visit, I learned that they'd stripped the name from my account for inactivity (why?) despite the fact that I had a tremendous amount of previous activity and my account name was hardly in demand. Because they did that, I never wound up going back (when I probably would have otherwise periodically visited)

Surgery went well. They had to dig deeper than expected, but they got all the calcification out of the wound. Now the healing process can begin, and as a bonus I got some good drugs for my trouble. The bad is that I'm having some wicked nausea from the anesthesia, but that will eventually pass. However, 3 hours of vomiting is not fun.

It's a giant crater on the left side of my stomach covered with a bandage. I won't get the wound vac until Tuesday morning. In the meantime Scarlett has to dig into my stomach, remove the dirty bandages, pit in clean ones,, and then cover it back up every day until Tuesday. Stupid insurance won't let me put the machine on me until it's approved and cleared. It's about 4 inches deep hole that is about another 4 inches wide. The wife wouldn't let me see it or take a picture of it for me, fearing would get depressed, which means it's pretty damn bad.

I've veen running a low fever on and off all day, and had nausea for the last three days. Today has been the first day I haven't vomited all of my food and drink back up after consumption.

I came to talk about Evo getting canned because Joey couldn't keep his hands to himself, or his privates in his pants, but giant stomach wounds are cool too.

Watched The Platform on NF a few weeks ago. Great concept and cool scifi setting, but it was generally a colossal bore.

Basically it's a vertical prison (which is a tremendously impractical design) where each floor consists of a cell with two prisoners and a gap running from the top of the structure to the bottom where, once a day, a platform containing food slowly descends floor by floor, stopping at each one for a few minutes.

While the most obvious interpretation of the theme might that of a criticism of so-called trickle-down economics (since the top floors eat very well, the middle floors get their leftovers, those below them get the scraps, and often nothing reaches the people towards the bottom), you get a bit more going on and the characters themselves frequently discuss the system.

As you might expect, there's murder and cannibalism but, despite that, things just feel so unbelievably dull. The action is relatively subdued and the dialogue is pretty weak, partly because it's translated (and the dub frequently differs from the sub)

Predators can't even come close to competing with most super heroes, heck, even tech we have now would basically make a preditor just equal to one normally trained soldier pretty much, they have nothing (other then mini-suicide nukes) over us at this point.

Their camo suit doesn't work with heat, so just need to have infra glasses etc to nullify that, and we already have that tech. Their guns are not really that much more destructive than ours, they in general seem to almost be less agile then humans are (well you know, soldiers).

So yeah predator (or even a bunch of em) vs just about any superhero = toast.

Considering he's been damaged by just melee attacks, same thing as anything else. Plus Xenomorphs attack in great number and have acidic blood, etc, shown capable of dissolving metal in seconds. Not to mention they absorb the qualities of their host, so you could have super-powered Xenomorphs.

Perhaps. Now name one. Just one that doesn't already outrank a random Special Ops soldier or LA beat cop in the heirarchy of powers and abilities.

Even Maria Hill and Phil Coulson have access to better resources than a beat cop on short notice. Sure, Tony Stark is just a mehum in a power suit. But he has a power suit. Bruce Wayne may be a mehum, but he's a mehum with extraordinary resources. Constantine? Zatana? Great magics. Natasha Romanov? Hawkeye? Still mehums with extreme training.

If you're looking to completely depowered humans, and a commando and a cop have already taken down Predators, even Yajirobe and Hercule could body a Yautja 1v1.

Batman? Wildcat? Rorschach? Any of a thousand other guys... oh right, we need Marvel. Well, Punisher for starters, considering he *was* a soldier and often depicted as Spec Ops.

Granted, a lot of heroes would be outmatched or easily killed by a predator, especially during an ambush.

Seems unlikely. And it took a ton for that commando to beat a predator and, by the way, you're forgetting *all* of the commandos who got slaughtered by the predator. Likewise, a lot of cops were killed by the second predator... and even the hero-cop would have been killed several times but the predator chose to wait.

WhiskeyDisk posted...
Predators barely rank above trash mobs for anyone with noteworthy ability. Even a pissed off Lucius Fox or Alfred Pennyworth has decent odds of taking out a Predator.

For starters, many of the predators seen on film or comics are on earlier hunts and are thus inexperienced. Second, and more importantly, they're physically superior to humans and armed with incredible tech, but it's not like they're immune to conventional weapons. The fact that somebody *can* beat them doesn't make them weak, particularly when within the same work they generally kill many other humans. It's like pointing out that Michael Myers was beaten by a teenage girl. Sure, that's true, but he killed many grown men before that happened.

As for Alfred specifically, he's often written as being ex-special forces, so he's generally capable.

I finally watched an episode of The Toys that Made Us. I had always assumed that TMNT was a comic turned into a cartoon, but apparently it was a self-published comic stumbled upon by an ambitious agent who approached a toy company that created a cartoon to promote the toyline, a story not terribly unlike a lot of 80s cartoons although this one added a few extra steps at the beginning.

Apparently the show's seasons are only 4 episodes long, which is kinda bullshit, but it's still kinda interesting. Would be nice if they actually showed more of the toys, though >_>

Started watching the He-Man episode, which has been even more interesting (and varies quite a bit from the "they did it because they couldn't get the Conan license" story I had heard). Additionally, it's kinda neat because I recognize a bunch of the guys they're interviewing (like Dave Vonner)... although it's weird because it lists some of their creds as "Masters of the Universe Classics" when they disco'd the line in 2015 or 2016 (at which point Super 7 began to produce things that Mattel either owned or licensed)

The funniest part was that both the comic and cartoon -- allegedly -- both sprung from one of their marketing guy making promises on the spot when pitching to retailers who were going to carry the line (first bringing up the comic and then, when TRU pointed out that the line was for ages 5 & up (who were unlikely to be able to read) he said they'd be doing two one-hour TV specials.... which after they approached Filmation turned into a season of a full cartoon since it wasn't much more expensive)

If you find that interesting as a concept, you should check out Toy Galaxy (ToyGalaxyTV) on YouTube. They do a lot of longer videos about 80s cartoons and the toy tie-ins that they were built around, and include some surprising stuff even if you think you already know the background of a given show.

You'll mostly want to look for the "The History of..." playlist, as they have a lot of other videos that are mostly just about toys and modern figure releases in general, so just looking at their entire video list can be a bit cluttered.

Probably will check them out at some point. Even the modern stuff is of interest to some extent. I was rather shocked by some developments the last time I stopped in a toy aisle, since McFarlane of all companies is now producing collector-level DC Comics stuff instead of Mattel (who apparently is still doing the lower-end items) and Hasbro rather visibly took over making Power Rangers merch from Bandai. Not that there hadn't been signs in Mattel's case, since they kept downgrading their collector offerings for DC which also grew increasingly dismal in terms of design.

To follow up on a topic from a week or so ago; I bring back up, The Last of Us 2, but not because of the game itself, but about what's happening to voice and motion capture actress, Laura Bailey.

She's an experienced voice actresses with lots of work to her credit, and I remember her vividly as young Trunks and Goten from DragonBall Z.

Now idiots on Twitter and Facebook are threatening to kill her, sexually assault her, and do harm to her family. Neil Druchman of Naughty Dog is getting the same death threats sans the sexual assault proclamations.

This is just the evolution of the hate culture we talked about earlier.

We have all been upset over the choice writers or producers take a movie or show, but we quit watching, (Doctor Who) move on with our lives, we don't threaten to kill and sexually assault the actors. Because we are fully functional adults.

I just wish the world was different.

I miss the days when voicing your discontent with a game meant writing a letter or email to GamePro or EGM or whatever. It was too much work for trolls so most wouldn't bother. Plus, you needed some level of grammar and an ability to write a clear, concise point in order to be published, and that would further filter out the low forehead-types.

Social media gives the drooling masses too much access/reach. And it supplies them with a steady throng of likeminded morons who slap the 'like' button, start a sharing circle jerk and so on into perpetuity.

What sane person believes threats of death and rape are an appropriate response to not liking a video game?

While harassment and death threats aren't cool, the fact that fans have a direct line to devs and publishers has often had positive elements. Granted, sensible criticism is often overlooked in favor of the loudest, angriest voices, but the same was true when it came to letters that gaming magazines chose to publish. And, in terms of impact, it's still vastly less problematic than cancel culture (which also relies on social media) since the worst parts of the anger are disregarded which limits their effect.

Yeah, cancel culture and Internet A****** culture are the same side of the crapy coin.

In truth somebody said something on Twitter that stuck with me since this morning.

"All the people that are going to wear nask are already wearing mask, washing their hands, and social distancing. You're not going to reach anyone new.)

It's like Coke and Pepsi at this point. Anything less than 5% to 10% growth of a corporation each year is considered an abject failure, but is there anyone left on the planet at this point outside of uncontacted tribes of the Amazon and the residents of North Sentinel Island that are unaware of these products? Has a lifelong Coke drinker ever asked themselves if they were wrong all this time and switched to Pepsi? Two products that literally have to wait for more people to be born and grow to the age where cola won't kill them to even market to them...

That's where we're at with masks, but with the summer heat, wearing a mask is more unpleasant than drinking a Coke if you prefer Pepsi.

Now idiots on Twitter and Facebook are threatening to kill her, sexually assault her, and do harm to her family. Neil Druchman of Naughty Dog is getting the same death threats sans the sexual assault proclamations.
The good news is, death and rape threats are worthless, hollow, and never amount to shit. Not excusing them in anyway, but I doubt she actually has anything to fear. It basically comes with the territory of being anyone of any sort of fame these days.

I switched a few times over the years and now I'm kinda split evenly between them.

Personally, I just question how powerful the hatedom for the game would be if Neil Druckmann wasn't such a grade-A cocknozzle who seems to actively jerk off over how many fans he can alienate in a given day with his shenanigans.

Granted, at least some of it stems from "I was emotionally invested in this setting and these characters and you took a hot steaming shit on both of those things, grr, I am now mad", but his rampant douchebaggery probably helps stir up people who might otherwise be annoyed into a frothing rage.

Kind of like how "What, you people don't have phones?" or "Hey, everything has to be plugged in these days" crystalized the hate against Diablo and the Xbone in ways that might not have happened if sane and rational PR people were capable of reading a room and not throwing rocket fuel onto a raging fire.

But Laura's actually loveable and beloved - I kind of feel like if anyone ever actually tried to go after her for real there'd be at least a few people who would track that person down and beat them to death with a tireiron. Assuming Travis didn't beat them to death with their own limbs first.

I got around to watching the two seasons of Harley Quinn, and I enjoyed it. Half or more of the characters are somehow seeing my favorite versions of them, the plots come together nicely, and things that happen in any one episode have lasting effects on later episodes. The humor is a bit similar to Venture Bros. at points, in regards to style or delivery, but it works.

My bootleg Playstation Vita memory card finally arrived from Amazon this afternoon. It was originally scheduled to arrive sometime in August, so I forgot it existed, and when it arrived today I was pleasantly surprised.

I juat hope it works.
