Social media is the number 1 cause of all the worlds problems today. The amount of jealousy, rage, fear it generates is insane. And im not even talking about fake news. I'm talking about people who basically lie or stretch the truth of their personal lives which causes the anger. Or people who get jealous that a person has more likes/followers/subscribers than them. Its becoming the new way we describe our 'net worth' even.

The general psychological effects of social media is easily the number one cause of all these alt right movements cropping up. Trump, Bolsonero, Boris Johnson/Brexit, Swedish Democrats being the fastest growing party in Sweden these days, etc.

This executive order is what happens when the potus has the same issues with the psychological damage that social media use causes.

The people who were crazy were always crazy, they just now have an audience. The racists were always racist, they just now have an audience.

You can make the argument that no audience means they can't do any harm, but then look back at the last several years and consider how much shit wouldn't be known if not for people reporting it on social media. How much shit people would get away with if not for the internet taking action.

Social Media at this point is a necessary evil.

while i don't think that's entirely true i do appreciate that they realize they stepped into a landmine with someone who could actually do something and backtracked for now. earlier in the topic i think people were giving Zuck some shit for being more hands off but honestly, he's got the right approach on that aspect. those two platforms generally trade on good and bad ideas and have overreached a couple times but there's definitely a place for discussion on this because whether it's trump or someone else, there will be regulation imposed on these platforms for their public forum/square status. courts have clearly been going in that direction and i'd expect more internet rights to come up. but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

I mean, I'm not sure there's a good answer there.

If you have a centralized platform or whatever then unless you're willing to just cut it out of your life you're at the mercy of the moderation of the platform owner whether it be a private company or the government. Both have their pitfalls. If you have a bunch of alternatives then you probably end up with a bunch of bubbles.

Fortunately we have chosen the worst of both worlds where we have a limited set of massive platforms that basically allow you to create your own bubbles within them.

Twitter trying to actually enforce the tamest rules is both a minuscule positive step but also sadly hilarious in just how small it is.

though some elements are possibly a little ripe for my liking but it's getting closer. take the amendment about warrentless search history - that's the current law. the amendment was to remove that aspect and it came close to failure, with dissent allowed by party leaders. that's a notable shift that suggests a little more pressure could get some internet rights happen sooner than later. as a guy firmly in first and fourth amendments as my top 2, we definitely need this shit defined.

I remember the early days when people expected me to have a MySpace and were confused when I explained to them that the idea of posting my personal information online for everyone to see made me uncomfortable.
