I was just talking about this to my friend last night during the debates. Like, you guys are 70+. You are rich as hell and your days are limited, so why are you not somewhere on a beach, enjoying your remaining years instead of working such a stressful job? Is it an addiction to power or something?

The only people who reach that level are addicted to power

And they take PLENTY of vacations, paid for by bribes

Once you're past 80, all you're doing is earning green paper. You might as well be putting rocks in a basket and collecting them. It's worth just as much to you when you die.

lots and lots of old people are addicted to power. You guys even seen a homeowners association? the worst and most anal-retentive board members are all old retirees with nothing better to do than play neighborhood hall monitor. the worst, angriest, most petty and disciplinarian teachers? all older.

Old people love controlling things.

It goes back to one of my old topics where I talked about the "work until you die" mentality. I hate to sound insensitive but I think it's because they feel like work is the only thing keeping them alive is why they won't retire gracefully. Also rich people can't be rich enough and they'll keep thinking of ways to bring in money even when they don't need it or bring it with them to the afterlife.

Vince McMahon is one of these people who will work until he croaks.

Definitely a big reason why old people won't retire. Once you're up there and have lots of power you obviously don't want to lose it.

They have a point though. The government that is supposed to represent the people should at least resemble the rest of the working population. People have the unfortunate idea that age alone equals better leadership. There are fields and businesses where people in their 70's and 80's refuse to step down. Part of that is many of them don't want to sit around and feel useless.

No. They should represent the entire population. Having able senior citizens is part of that. If they're old, corrupt billionares is a different issue, but TC is taking issue with age, which is fucking wrong and discriminatory.

Because they are power hungry and have a ton of wealth to actually run for elections. Also young people don't vote unless it's the main election. They need to realize primaries are important so they don't get stuck with two terrible candidates that the old people voted in.

Ageism has been a thing for decades if not centuries. Sure, it'll be a long time since "woke" people start tweeting about it, but it's a real issue. Treating senior citizens like children is fucked in so many ways and most don't even understand the damage they do to them.

Well TBF everyone can be discriminated by age and old people make fun of young people all the time. I agree ageism is a bad thing but can't do much until society falls in line with it.

I meant the average age of working politicians shouldn't be decades above the average age of the rest of our workforce. There are seniors in the workforce and there nothing is wrong with that. I just don't believe that a group of people that are mostly 60 are going to be the best people to make decisions that could effect the next few decades of my life.

Yeah. For all people want to fucking talk shit shit about diversity checklists, having a group of people with a wide range of ethnic backgrounds, ages, religions, etc help make sure that the concerns of every demographic is expressed. This isn't important just for politics but also for large companies whose influence hits hundreds of millions of people.

It is reflective of the stagnancy of our politics, that virtually all the important figures in government are septuagenarians, most of whom have been in politics for decades. Like, Kamala Harris at 56 years old qualifies as an injection of youth into our political system.

Because most of our younger politicians are suspect at best, and some like AOC are completely bonkers.

Boomers vote. Until a few years ago, Boomers had more voting power than the younger generations combined. We are literally waiting for older generations to die off to replace them because one generation is so much larger than the others.

It wouldn't be so bad if the younger crowd would participate more. People don't ever vote or research their representatives and then claim that their vote doesn't matter because the system doesn't work for them. I don't think it'll change over night, but a system where mostly older white people are participating is going to work more for older white people.

People should vote more but it sucks that people have to go out and vote during a pandemic right now.
