Im getting the first dose of the covid vaccine on Monday. CA recently opened it up to pregnant women. Theres been recent research that shows its safe for pregnant women and beneficial for the newborn who will get the antibodies. I asked my OB and he absolutely recommended I get it if I could manage an appointment. So I did.

I told my sister who was excited. But I didnt tell my mom because she always gets in my business and worries about everything. My aunt is worse too. Well my sister didnt know and shared with my mom, thinking shed be happy for me.

Nope, I get a call from my mom and aunt telling me off for supposedly putting myself and baby at risk, how Im being dumb and that I should wait until after Im done nursing. That who cares if she gets antibodies and its no big deal if my daughter caught covid because it doesnt do anything to infants anyway.

Im beyond fucking annoyed.

No. My aunt has been vaccinated and my mom has an appointment next month. They just dont think its safe for a pregnant/nursing woman to do. Apparently I should risk my child getting covid over her getting antibodies

In the event your mom and aunts worst fears are right: pregnancy complications, risk to your baby or yourself.

In the event youre right: Baby gets antibodies to covid.

I say their concern is justified. Baby will grow up and get the vaccine yearly like we all probably will. I personally wouldnt risk it but youre obviously gonna do you and if your immediate family aint stopping you obviously you dont care what we have to say.

I think thats why Im annoyed. Just this constant scrutiny now on my choices. I had told my aunt that my husband is taking FMLA after my maternity leave and she started giving me shit about how men shouldnt stay home to take care of babies and he should be working instead of taking a pay cut, etc

Or my mom insisting I eat certain foods to produce breast milk. And I told her Im not going to stress myself about it, if I cant breastfeed Im fine with formula. Then a few days later she tells me she bought some tea for me to produce breast milk. Sigh.

My aunt is vaccinated. My mom is getting it too but her appointment is a few weeks away. But she is getting a covid test before coming to stay with me and my husband. Shes supposed to be helping me. Im really regretting my decision to invite her. But everyone I spoke to said to accept help if I could and said their biggest regret was not getting help the first few weeks. So I dunno. My mom and I clash a lot because shes a stress case and over dramatic about everything. But maybe Ill be so tired with a newborn that I will just not care.

I wouldn't call that worst case scenario myself but I understand your concern.

The difference to me is while COVID is a serious risk, AND increased risk to pregnant women, it's not a choice, it's not something you're willingly putting into your body. Whereas getting the vaccine is.

Now before you think I'm some anti-vaxxer. Don't get it twisted. I'm a frontline worker in Healthcare and I still haven't received my shot yet and I'm pretty cheesed off about that. But I also recall conversations with multiple nurses, one of whom was pregnant and declined the vaccine at the time and explained the risk and complications of it to me.

Again, at the end of the day it doesn't matter what I say. Again, it's obviously your choice. But I respect the concern of your family members, after all, you may be a grown woman, but you're still your mothers child. Your decisions are your own and not all parental advice is wisdom. But that's a two way street. Something to think about as you become a parent yourself. I wish the best for you and your baby regardless.

you've already had the baby?

i'm not too in touch with the current studies on the vaccine during pregnancy, but while that might be a risk its very unlikely that there'd be one post pregnancy. sure you pass immunoglobulins through nursing, but you're highly unlikely to set off an autoimmune reaction in the baby if they dont do so to the mother. and its impossible for you to transfer over any of the vaccine that way unless the tech injects you in the breast while you're nursing the baby...

Short background for me. I recovered from COVID-19 last year. Even as a qualified front liner with Healthcare, I chose to hold off the vaccine for now because I still feel uncomfortable. Maybe in the near future though.

Still, I do sincerely wish the best to others who choose to get it. Hoping the best for you and your baby too.

I spoke to a good friend of mine who is in the health industry and has a PhD in biochem. She has access to all sorts of research that isnt always publicly available yet. Id be careful about babies at the beach. My nephew came with us to Hawaii when he was 1 and he behaved like an angel the whole trip except when we took him to the beach. He got way too hot and threw an explosive tantrum. He was fine at the hotel pool, but the beach heat was too much for his little head lol.

Aww poor little guy. Yeah the heat can be harsh and you cant put sunscreen under 6 months old. We took my niece to the beach when she was a few months old. We had a baby tent for her where she just slept. It was great and keeping her away from the sun. She did great there. Im hoping we can do the same with our baby.

Funny you mention the baby tent, Im pretty sure thats why he had the meltdown. He was fine just walking through the market and in the car and what not, but the heat penetrated his baby tent. Like a sauna for infants. But thats also Hawaii in 32/90 degree heat so maybe Im just flapping my gums ha ha.

Fair enough I know your a Quebec transplant but couldnt remember where you moved State side.

And Im entirely jealous. My family wants a big group vacation so bad, but were holding out for vaccinations and health orders. Have fun if you do go Hawaii is amazing, been 7 times myself over the years, one of my favourite places to visit.

Im in Cali. But growing up we always went to Sea Side in NJ and my brother still takes my nieces out there in the summer. I joined them when they took my oldest niece after she was born. So its been a few years. It was the last time we had a big family vacation, I definitely wish we could have another.

The nice thing about our trip to Hawaii is my husband should also be vaccinated by September and we will have a timeshare. Everyone has to test negative before going to Hawaii and its a direct flight there from LA.

Congratulations on getting the shot (and the baby of course)!

I've seen firsthand the disagreements and tension that can come from overly involved parents during pregnancy/ birth between my sister and father when my nephew came along five years ago. It's definitely less frequent and intense now, largely in part of to the two of them managing to catch themselves more before speaking/ texting.

I'm a dad, not a mom, but I feel your pain. Seems like a common problem for new parents.

What you're also going to have to look out for, is if you have those same family members baby sit for you. They'll use that opportunity to do what they want with baby.
