Maybe its because Im always the tank and I like to think I know what Im doing. Im stuff like FF XIV I typically get commendations and have a pretty decent assist rate in MOBAS

but these fuckers in Pokmon Unite playing tanks do NOT try to block the enemy from getting at me when theyre playing obvious tanks like snorlax! Its maddening!

Tanks are basically expected to lead the group in PUGs, and know all dungeon mechanics and when to pull, what to focus, etc
And then DPS complain about them not being perfect. And then they complain about there not being enough tanks.

Tanking in MMOs is almost always the easiest job (ESPECIALLY if we're talking XIV), it just requires the most proactive play and a bit more preliminary knowledge about the fight. Meanwhile moba tanking always seemed one of the more challenging roles because you both have to recognize when the best times to start or end fights are, but also recognize your allies' tendencies over the course of a short game so you can adapt and support better. In random matches, noone really tries to learn allies' playstyles because you'll never see them again, so there ends up being a lot of unspoken miscommunication of expectations.

I dont think I ever consistently take the lead. I just make sure I take hits and my allies dont take hits. Most of the time Im usually second in line ready to spring up front whenever needed.

Tank is hard cause other jobs are generally clear in what they need to do. Healer just needs to keep everyone alive and DPS just needs to do as much DPS as possible.

Tanks job depends on the preconceptions and subsequent expectations of the other party members else they're shit. They gotta pull more adds cause we're going too slow. They gotta pull less cause the healer can't keep up or doesn't _want_ to keep up because they think the tank is pulling too much. They have to be the leader of the party unless someone else thinks they should take control. It just goes on.

All the above is true for all roles but you feel it more on tank.

tanks in mobas usually have hard cc that lets them force advantageous fights; if you usually play reactively and you have significant cc, you're missing out on a lot of engagements that could result in a kill

obviously tanks differ based on their kits (an arthas is not going to start fights as often as an amumu, diablo, or tidehunter will), but in general they have better tools to start fights with than the rest of their allies due to either hard cc or the ability to dive. you have to proactively give the enemy a reason to target you or they will ignore you

i've only played a little bit of unite and i don't really like it because it feels like peeling for allies in that game is more fuck with the autotarget with your gigantic cheeks than actually provide utility or threat

in specifically XIV, this is not true in the least. tanks are dps with extremely simple rotations that at certain scripted points in the fight need to press mitigation buttons and occasionally run to a specific spot. there is zero flexibility in what they need to do or are expected to do. dps are harder because their rotations are more than just pressing 123, but healers are the hardest of all because you have to do as much damage as possible in addition to healing or your team isn't going to beat the enrage timer. it's gotten to the point where in XIV, a good healer is never actually seen casting a healing spell, because they've optimized their rotation to such an absurd degree they can rely entirely on cooldowns. healers have the largest margin to excel because of how they have to leverage the party living vs how much team damage they can contribute to; DPS have a big margin to excel by utilizing their class's movement and minimizing downtime. tanks have the least margin to excel because their entire kit is so incredibly straightforward

wow tanks used to be more interesting but they've taken away a lot of the big brain ability out of classes over the years and it just feels like a different dps. the part i hate the most is how they reduced how vital stagger is to brewmaster by simply nerfing stagger numbers and making them baseline have more passive armor

In my experience its always some DPS players who are the worst at the game and think they know how the tank or healer should play, and end up screwing things up or try to start arguing

This is my opinion too. I have been without an MMO for far too long. The only one I have played the past 5-ish years is Star Trek Online which is not trinity based and almost all content can be solo'd. I also created a bot which grinds currency for you. the first move in e8s will actually literally wipe the entire party without mitigation, and you have to heal that up before movement-heavy segments

Have you looked at New world? Not sure if I like it and I was in the beta but its a new MMo. My friend tells me WoW classic is good too.
