I always think of 2000-2012ish as when licensed games were at their worst. There was so many throwaway licensed games, even late into the 360's life.

How the hell were Ducktales and Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers for the NES not your immediate first picks? Those are the gold standard for licensed games.

One reason might be budget, those licenses are not free and the cost has to come from budget that would otherwise be spent in dev time. Also they kings didnt need to be good to make some money back so they were the bare minimum product they could sell.

Two of the best movie games I ever played were Spiderman 2 and Xmen Origins Wolverine.

Xmen Origins was a shit movie and the game was better than the movie. Still had its flaws, but it had real time Wolverine damage and regen that you could actually see. It was good for its time.

Basically

Not only were they made with little to no intent to actually be good, they were also crunched to have a release that coincided with the movie. So basically they'd just be trying to push something half assed acceptable out the door.

I'm pretty sure there are way more than 36 old shitty licensed games to offset the exceptions to the rule.

90% is pretty generous tbh

They're still mostly awful today, but I think a lot of it comes down to them using engines or underlying software so the bad is less bad. Although most licensed shit now is still bad, you're unlikely to ever see another ET or something that's bad to the point of being completely unplayable.

However, I'm not sure it's ever been 90%. There were a lot of passable licensed games, as well as some great ones. Capcom did some amazing things with Marvel fighting games starting in the 90s and, while flawed, the old Marvel beat-em-ups are still fun. And sure, Marvel and DC aren't the *only* licensed shit, but they're some of the biggest.

The SW licensed shit was often awesome as well, particularly the flight sims.

I think that part of it also has to do with the fact that video game technology and genres were more limited back then, and therefore couldn't quite capture the license in the best way. For example, there wasn't really a great Spider-Man game until 2000 (that was the first time you could really swing from building to building). Due to the advent of new technology, you could do more.

It lasted like a decade longer than that. Even MCU got a few crappy licensed games.

The only reason they stopped was because the budget to make them got too high on consoles. Most publishers treated them as cheapo releases that sold solely because of the brand. Now they moved onto mobile.

Yeah people remember the good stuff but forget how bad most of them were. Nearly everything got a licensed game for a while. Even fucking Neighbours has a video game.

But its all a matter of opinion.

For example, in my opinion, GI Joe for NES is one of the best games of that generation.

Little Mermaid for NES, while incredibly easy once you get the hang of it, is a great game.

Theres a lot of pre-2000 WWF and WCW wrestling games for NES, Genesis, and SNES.

All the TMNT games for Genesis and SNES are good to great.

I could keep going.

Not gonna lie, the nostalgia-addled part of me kinda misses the times when pretty much every film release had a half-arsed platform game on the shelves while it was still in the cinema (whether it made sense for it to lend itself to a platformer or not). They were almost always crap, and pretty much just existed to trick your gran into buying you rubbish games for Christmas, but they do spark that warm glow of childhood memories.

King of the nonsensical platform tie-ins (not a movie, but still...) will always be this bastard:

I reckon part of it is that video games weren't in the mainstream. Big movie studios would sell their rights to any bunch of clowns without any idea whether or not they would make a decent game. Like how tf do Titus Interactive get the Superman licence?
