I think the most common type of American is probably Fiscally Liberal, Socially Conservative. Lots and lots of people want better healthcare and also think that gay people are icky. Sadly, the culture wars always matter more than the economic wars or the class wars or the wars wars.

I don't think that's right, especially when gay marriage is experiencing record high approval ratings. The issue is that most Americans want better Healthcare, but also most Americans are (were? I haven't checked in a while) happy with their current health insurance. It's why Obamacare, despite being a positive for Americans, got such a huge backlash in the midterms.

Democrats are going to get destroyed at the midterms pretty much no matter what they do. They are perceived as the greater of 2 evils right now. And they could easily be the lesser of 2 evils again in 2024. The voters are maintaining a delicate balancing act to stop either party from getting too much power.

The reason people are satisfied with their healthcare is because of literal propaganda telling them its the best they could possibly get.

The reason people with shitty private insurance are scared of Medicare for all is because they are repeatedly told the only alternative is year long waits, rationed medicine, and death panels.

People who acknowledge and agree with a middle ground solution reinforce that belief, because if Medicare for All is really better, why would you have to reassure me my current insurance wont be affected?

I think that's definitely part of it but I think the main issue is worse. I think the reason the majority are satisfied is because they're selfish. They don't need it or aren't using it or don't see the effects of the system on the disadvantaged. So they hear stuff and go "who cares it doesn't affect me mine is fine they're making it up". And then when it does affect them they go "how would I have known?!?!"

Mask and vaccine mandates are a dangerous thing to build your strategy around - they're unpopular while in effect but meaningfully reduce the number of cases and deaths caused by COVID. If the mandates are dropped and case numbers go up, Republicans can claim Biden (and therefore all Democrats) are mismanaging the pandemic and make a case that they can do better if elected. If the mandates remain in effect Republicans get to base their midterm strategy around opposing the mandates and win voters that way.

Honestly I don't see any way Dems hold on to the Senate. They might hold on to the House, but it'll be by a very slim margin if they do. And you can kiss goodbye just about every state legislature and governor's mansion that's in an even slightly purple state. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am.

It's actually the complete opposite: they have a slim ability to hold or maybe even increase their margin the Senate as it's a more favorable map to them and there's a few blue state GOP senate seats they have a good chance of picking up.

The House is gone. Thanks to gerrymandering and the general layout of the country, the Dems need to be at least +5 in generic polling to keep the House.

Republicans are currently +4.

It's gonna be an absolute bloodbath in the House. Like 40+ seat change. There's nothing the Dems can run on right now, even if they did have some basic legislative accomplishments. People are pissed that things cost more, and there's very few options to fix it. People are pissed gas is so high, and there's very few options to fix that. People want schools open without any mandates, sick kids and faculty be damned.

Yeah I agree with Rock. The senate is defendable and maybe possible to pick up a single seat in, which could be a big deal - but the house race is over, as far as I'm concerned. Dems defending the house is just not realistic. I consider R+15 in the house to be fairly optimistic - I'm expecting more like R+30. I don't think it'll be as bad as 2010 (which was like R+60 or something if I recall correctly) but it's going to be really, really bad.

Clamping down how though? Seems like a poorly implemented absentee/mail-in process could easily be rife with fraud, are they trying to get rid of it entirely, or make it more secure?

I remember people were raising a big stink about Republicans trying to put in a requirement for having photo ID to vote, but pretty much every democracy in the world has that requirement already, and the US is the odd one out in just letting people show up

You're not required to bring an ID to vote in the UK unless you live in Northern Ireland.

Australia? Nope. No photo id required. They're only asked three questions.

New Zealand? You guessed it. No id required.

Gerrymandering in favor of Rs would actually backfire in a true landslide because the gerrymandering prefers concentrating D voters into a smaller number of deep blue districts which would be resistant to a landslide while light blue districts would flip.

I've been following it more closely than you have, because redistricting isn't going the Dems' way currently. Pickups in NY, NJ, and IL (some of these may be litigated) are being offset by losses elsewhere; the 538 tracker says that Dems have gained seats but that's super misleading due to the precise nature of where those gains are because there are a lot of tossup or light red districts being shored up R that are going to push Ds out after making some gains in 2020. If the NY/NJ/IL maps hold up then I think ultimately it's going to be a wash for the two parties - which means the more important factor will take over, which is that it's a midterm with the democrats in control where dem voters aren't motivated and gop voters are pissed about CRT or whatever. R+30-R+40 isn't really a sky-is-falling prediction here, it's the realistic expectation based on history.
