#45 - Peacemaker (Christopher Smith)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/5/3/4/AAcguBAADlIm.png

It was hard to do the write up for Paco without talking too much about Chris Smith.

As mentioned before, when we were in El Paso we end up at Reyes' Auto Mechanic, where Chris Smith already was, looking for Jaime Reyes. Chris has people that he has to get across the border and he needs Jaime's help for that. When we got pointed to Paco, he started to leave without us and Brennus followed after him, offering our help, since we were after the same thing. Here we learned that he's from a town called Warpath. Warpath is under assault by the Trigger Twins and he needs to get his people somewhere safe. Chris reluctantly agrees to meet us at the taco shop Paco was said to be at, but won't wait for us.

When we get there, as mentioned before, we find Chris pointing his gun at Paco. Here, he talks about how he once had a different name and dons the Peacemaker helmet. We met a different Peacemaker, Mitchell Black, when he woke up one of our groups from their tubes in Metropolis and he ended up sacrificing his life to get us out of the city safely. We didn't know Mitchell well, but from what we did, Chris seems to be his opposite. Cold, stoic and willing to do whatever is necessary to make peace in this brutal world we all found ourselves in.

Eventually, we meet up with him again in Warpath to get his people out safely and it's a brutal session. The Society sends wave after wave of troops against the church people are hiding in and we're doing our best to buy them enough time to escape. This is also the session that resulted in our only PC death so far (RIP Taliesin).

During the Convoy, Peacemaker played a role in keeping the civilians safe and remained a constant thorn in the side of Paco, bullying him into being useful. Even after returning to Z'onn Z'orr, he still bullies poor Paco... there was a concert perform by Shiny Happy Aquazon recently to raise moral and Paco attended...

Paco seems absolutely gaga over Aquazon. "She's so hot, man... but like, total marriage material."
A gruff voice whispers behind Paco. "Don't you have somewhere to be?"
"JESUS!"
Paco leaps in the air, spinning to confront the Peacemaker, in full costume. "Sir! I didn't- That is- I was-"
"You better get down to the garage now, or I'll tell Owlman you took the afternoon off."
"Or did baby need another week of vacation?"

When I asked Chris if he enjoyed the concert to try to deflect his attention from Paco...

Peacemaker turns to look at you. "You want to save your parents or do you want to fuck around?"

Peacemaker is another member of our Tokyo field team. During our check ins with that team, we haven't heard much about his performance or the roll he is playing. He has lacked screen time since the Convoy has ended... these lower rankings seem to give me lots of ideas of characters that I need to check in on. I don't know if this write up has done a good job explaining why I like Chris. It's hard to put it into words. He's just someone that has connected with me.

Hint for #44: This is the character that wasn't initially on my list that knocked off poor Helios!

#44 - Blue Devil

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/4/4/AAcguBAADlNc.png

This one is proof to me how non-objective my rankings are. Blue Devil has been with us since basically the start of the campaign. He's been consistently great. But he was a Lush-centric character for the most part. it wasn't until recently that he became more involved with Brennus' storyline. And thus it wasn't until recently that he placed on my list.

But I think that's fair. It's my list, so obviously it's going to be made up of characters that I interact with and that I like. So there.

Blue Devil is one of the magicians in Oblivion, a magical bar that is attached to Z'onn Z'orr when we rescued them in like, week 2 of the campaign and they allied with us. Most residents of Oblivion cannot leave without instantly summoning the Spectre. Blue Devil is one of the exceptions - as long as he leaves his magical trident behind, he's safe to leave. I'll leave how Blue Devil fits into Lush's story for Scare's list, but recently, Brennus found himself in need of a new magical trainer in Oblivion. The pool of options is limited and no one jumped out as the obvious choice to me. Ragman spoke to me as a player, since Varra had lots of interactions with him in Campaign 1, but I don't know how well he fits with Brennus and also he's Saoirse's teacher. Enchantress is scary and has basically told Brennus she expects him to die. Encantadora is even scarier. Constantine has shown a level of disinterest that... well, that he probably shows to everyone if I think about it. Blue Devil kind of became a by default choice.

But he was the right choice.

He has a combination of physical strength and magical abilities, like Brennus. Unlike Brennus' last teacher, he's not buttering him up and constantly talking about how great Brennus is - but that is what Brennus needs. Blue Devil doesn't hold back in telling Brennus everything he does wrong and everything he needs to do to improve. His lessons are much more practical than theoretical. And the more time Brennus has spent with him the more he has begun to open up. He lashes out at Brennus for being brash and reckless because he's seen another teenager that he cared for suffer horribly for being brash and reckless. He had a partner who goes by the name Kid Devil. From what Lush and Brennus have pieced together, Kid Devil got beaten up horribly and then made a literal deal with a devil for devil powers, changing him into something no longer human. The name Kid Devil went from being a moniker based off his costume to an actual description. Where is Kid Devil now, what is he up to, and what effect will finding him have on Blue Devil?

Brennus has only had two lessons with Blue Devil so far, but each time he has, Blue Devil has jumped up my list. As they continue, I suspect that Blue Devil will end up even higher than this.

Hint for #43 - This character was met by the party in outer space.

Also for how Blue Devil ties into Lush's story is that she's one of his bigger enemies. She aligned herself with Bolt and the pair were a Thorn in his side. There's many many more layers to peel back, but in a snapshot that's what you'd get. She is a member of his Rogues gallery

#43 - Rot Lop Fan

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/9/3/AAcguBAADlUd.png

My character hasn't been too involved with space so far, but one of the Green Lanterns sticks out to me more than the others. When we finally made our way to space, we found a hub waiting for us on the Green Lantern world Oa. Half our party got arrested for traveling with things they shouldn't have while the other half went to try to defend them in their court. We found ourselves with few allies. Most Green Lanterns don't trust Terrans because of Hal Jordan and the actions he took when he was Parallax. So much of our interactions with them have been very short and curt.

Rot Lop Fan stuck out for being kind to us but also for not having a ring like all the other Green Lanterns. He explains to us that his sector doesn't have light - there are no stars there. He couldn't control a green lantern ring because of this - but they discovered that F# is the most closely related sonic wavelength. So he has a bell instead. He's not a Green Lantern, but a F# Bell. He uses his bell to offer tranquility to Hal - he knows that Hal was never the monster he was made out to be has remained one of his allies and now is one of ours.

In a world made up of aliens, Rot Lop Fan sticks out even more. The way he talks and his attitude are very calming. Despite how different he is, he almost makes Oa feel more like home just from how soothing I find him whenever he talks, in session or to Data in RP.

Hint for #42: This character has a connection to Zatanna.

#42 - Misty Kilgore

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/9/7/AAOJ0pAADbmp.png

This ranking is the opposite of what I just talked about in Blue Devil's rankings - this is a case of me being more objective. Misty and Brennus have had very limited scenes together. But I still find her to be one of the most interesting pieces of the campaign.

One of the key triggers for the campaign as a whole was the villain community learning that Zatanna was mindwiping villains. Changing their personas to make them less deadly, less cruel, less evil? The exact cause of this is still murky. Misty was (inadvertently?) bestowed the memories and personas of everyone that Zatanna had mindwiped.

Talking to Misty can be a struggle. She slips in and out of the personas with no warning. She'll go from making sense to squaking at you to talking about how much she loves Hal Jordan to talkingabouthowhorribleitisthatBrennushasbeenincontactwithZoom to talking about rape and murder.

At her core, or at least the core that we've been able to see, she's extremely sweet. She's absolutely in love with Pocus, her pet rabbit who has magical abilities themselves, and Misty loves to talk for Pocus. You can see every personality inside Misty as a victim but Misty is just as much of a victim as any of them.

One of the personas that resided in Misty was Batman. When Batman found out what Zatanna was doing and tried to stop her, her reaction was to mindwipe Batman and make him think that he loved Zatanna so that he would defend her more moving forward. How messed up is that? This revalation left everyone a little bit shaken and changed our perspectives on what is already one of the main aspects of the campaign.

And none of this even touches on the more recent revelation that Misty is the daughter of Gloriana Tenebrae, a Fey Queen who is engaged to Darkseid. We've only just begun unraveling the layers on that.

Misty gets a lot of screen time. And she deserves it.

Hint for #41: This character is this high partially because of their part in Campaign 1 as well.

Ah, right. The first time that the Reverse Flash personality came out and started taunting Brennus was when I rolled a nat 1 to summon my turtles, since Misty loves animals. The spell went wrong and I ended up punching Misty in the face, dazing her and bringing out that persona. Shortly after, Dr. Light came out and implied that he raped Varra.

Not my favorite Misty/Brennus moments! ...but one of the very few Misty/Brennus moments.

#41 - Shade (Richard Swift)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/3/5/AAQcMAAADgcn.jpg

In the first campaign, Varra ended up in the possession of an object that the group referred to as the Soul Bowl. We found a painting of Dorian Grey that when ripped poured out a black... goo. Touching the goo made you feel despair and see visions. We gathered that this goo is actually the soul of a man named Richard Swift. We gathered the goo in a stone bowl to take it back to our base with us.

To communicate with Richard, Varra would just write in it's presence. The goo would then form words back. Early in No Man's Land, Richard Swift and the Soul Bowl was one of Varra's closest friends. Richard's body was still out there, without his soul in it, and he wanted us to trick it into coming to Gotham so that he could be reunited with it. Varra agreed, but until they had a solution to make this happen, Varra would recount their adventures to Richard and ask for general advice. Richard was very suave, an upper crust gentlemen and the amount of personality that he showed in just being words on a page really resonated with me.

Eventually, we met Lois Lane (who wasn't really Lois Lane...) and convinced her to put a story about the ghosts that were in the Triad territory in No Man's Land, since Richard told us his body was fascinated with spirits. This story got his body here, although it wasn't just his body as we believed, but his old nemesis Simon Culp was in control of his body. He attacked us during a dinner party in the Triad territory that was probably one of my favorite adventures in Campagin 1. Richard and our group won, Culp lost, and Shade was complete again, leaving No Man's Land and leaving Varra behind.

In Campaign 2, Swift and Culp's battle was continuing in Opal City. Again, Shade won, but at a price this time. When the field team brought him back to Z'onn Z'orr, he wasn't solid. He was inky black tentacles that pulsed with life, but it took time for him to pull himself together again. And now that he is, he's every bit the gentleman and charmer that he appeared to be to Varra. I've wanted for months (years?) to have Brennus talk to Shade about Varra and their time as companions. Another thing to add to my list...

Hint for #40 - This character probably has the highest disposition with Minerva.

(I'm fairly confident with that fact but am including the probably there just to be safe)

#40 - King Shark (Nanaue)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/2/6/4/AAOJ0pAADbDw.jpg

I'll talk more about Freddy later (spoilers, but honestly, is it?) but we have an ongoing quest to find 13 deities to grant powers to Freddy Freeman so that he can become Captain Marvel. Each time we find one of them, we get a prophecy pointing to another one.

One of the our prophecies ended up pointing to Aquacave, a base used by Aquaman. Inside we found... Aquaman?! No, wait. He looks like Aquaman, but twenty years younger. He introduces himself to us as Arthur Josephy Curry - somehow he ended up on our Earth from an alternative world. He never knew Atlantis existed and never became Aquaman. Also inside Aqaucave, protecting AJ, is King Shark.

King Shark had an alteration with Orm, The Ocean Master, and fled the Society as a result. This is when he found AJ and another being known as Dweller in the Depths. Dweller told King Shark that he needed to protect AJ and gave them both directions on how to get to Aquacave, where they would wait until they found someone who could help them.

While this was all interesting, it wasn't why we came and we spent some time exploring the rest of Aquacave before realizing that no one else is there. King Shark, however, we learn is from a species descended from The Shark God, a primordial deity from millions of years ago. Maybe he can be a demigod that can grant Freddy the power we came for? When we try to ask him about this, he agrees... if one of us can beat him in a one-on-one fight.

Brennus quickly volunteers. Freddy is hesitant - King Shark has fought Superboy before, what chance does Brennus have against him? But it's what is necessary to get what we came for. The first starts and quickly, Brennus punches King Shark's nose, where he has a prevelant scar. And then...

King Shark's lip quivers. He sits down on the floor. And he starts crying. How could we be so cruel? AJ consoles King Shark and kicks our group out of Aquacave, claiming we are nothing but bullies. We're reluctant to leave - Freddy needs his new blessing! Bloodfruit in particular has major issues here with people not honoring their deals. On our way out, we get into a massive battle with enemy forces. Things are looking rough until AJ and King Shark burst out of the water to help us. After the battle, they apologize and King Shark, still not completely understanding what is happening, gives Freddy a portion of his powers.

King Shark has been a presence in Z'onn Z'orr since. Him and AJ are nearly inseperatable - we once tried to take AJ on a mission to Hawaii without taking King Shark and AJ ended up refusing to go without him. We ended up taking both and King Shark was a lot of fun there too. King Shark definetly has to fight his urges to eat people. When we first met in Aquacave, he was eating some popcorn and offered Brennus some. As Brennus reached for it, King Shark moved to try to eat Brennus before the others yelled at him. He acted offended - he simply had to yawn! There's always an excuse but you can't help but find this behavoir as charming as it is terrifying.

A lot of the deities who bless Freddy disappear after their mission is complete and I'm glad that didn't happen with Nanaue.

Hint for #39 - The strongest hero, excluding Superman.

#39 - Ambush Bug

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/1/1/8/AAcguBAADlw-.jpg

I thought my hint would be very obvious, but it seems that this is an event that only hombad and I remembered!

Early in the campaign, Etta Candy was explaining to Pepper the value in Wonder Woman. She led Pepper around Z'onn Z'orr, asking the question I gave in a hint to other PCs and NPCs - who is the strongest hero, after Superman? Common answers were The Spectre. Captain Marvel. Aquaman. Etta's point was that Wonder Woman wasn't considered as strongest, but if the question was who is the greatest hero other than Superman, she would have been answered. Wonder Woman's value isn't solely in her strength.

Pepper has a running issue where she doesn't know a lot about the hero community, which led to this exchange between her and Etta:

"Huh..."
"...And Ah've never even heard of lahke, half those names..."

"Yes, well, I'm not exactly sure why Brennus said Ambush Bug, either."

In an off-camera scene, Scar decided that Brennus would answer Ambush Bug to the strongest hero. It was an accurate decision and one I've been running with since, hence my hint!

When Brennus was kidnapped by Whisper, he was at his lowest. The League of Assassin's kidnapped him and killed his grandmother. Whisper A'daire was using a child to get what she wanted out of Varra. Brennus didn't know what was happening, didn't know that his mother was working with his father, who he didn't know was alive, to free him. All he knew is suddenly, an alien in a bug costume (?) teleported in front of him, said something mostly nonsensical and then teleported him to saftey with Amanda Waller.

That's it. That was Brennus' full exposure to Ambush Bug. He didn't know that he stuck around No Man's Land and helped the party in his bizarre fourth wall breaking manner. He didn't know about Ambush Bug's love for Jessica Drew, a Marvel character. He didn't know Ambush Bug's love for his puppet. But none of that matters. He saved Brennus' life. He's the greatest, strongest hero. After Superman.

For this campaign, we haven't seen much of Ambush Bug. On Week 52 of the campaign, the sat phone we have got a call from 52525252. Data answered and saw Ambush Bug trying to tell them something important about week 52. But Data kept hanging up. The next session (also week 52), Brennus was the one with the phone when Ambush Bug called. He rambled about how he's trying to get a hold of Data to tell him that he's building a wall and making Superman pay for it!

A few weeks later, another call came through, where we actually learned more about where Ambush Bug is. He's at the Great Wall of China - he can't telport... and an equated Superman is trying to kill him and the others there.

Uh-oh.

If we rescue him, he's also in for a surprise when he arrives at Z'onn Z'orr. His greatest nemesis, Argh!Yle Sock is at Z'onn Z'orr. Argh!Yle Sock is... well, a sock that seems most similar in personality to Dr. Doom. When he landed on our planet, he was with his wife. Ambush Bug found them and put his wife on his foot since, you know, she's a sock. Well, supposedly, she suffocated to death. Brennus doesn't believe this story. Ambush Bug would never do this.

I can't wait until we can get to the Great Wall. Brennus will be there to save his favorite hero. From an evil Superman. I'm sure that will be easy enough.

Hint for #38: This character probably shouldn't be this high. I'd be surprised if anyone guesses them. While they've been in Campaign 2, this ranking is almost fully based on Campaign 1.

We do not have much connection, you and I. Still, this encounter feels special. I hope you won't mind if I think of you as a friend.
