#33 - The Joker

In Campaign 1, The Joker only had a couple brief appearances, but what appearances they were. The first was a wedding between Tali and Azrael in which Joker paralyzed everyone at the party and then nearly killed Azrael, forcing us to ship him out of the city and removing him from the rest of the campaign. The second was at the end of the campaign when he was found to be behind the plot to kidnap babies that were born during No Man's Land. He also killed Sarah Essen-Gordon, a beloved NPC.

In Campaign 2, early on in our Gotham exploration we met Oberon Sexton, a masked figure who talked to our group about the necessity to cause a little chaos in Gotham. He tells us he knows Batman well and wants to catch his attention by striking against Simon Hurt and the OMACs who are ruling the city. He takes his diamond tipped cane and departs, telling us that he'll be watching us and judging us, waiting for us to cause some chaos of our own.

Eventually, all roads pointed us to attending a Society gala at a museum. Oberon invited us as well, but he was far from the other reason we had to attend. After our party all managed to sneak into the festivities under different methods, we found Oberon mingling with the crowd. The party came here to steal the paintings. Oberon says he's here to kill the King of Spades. We agree to work together - we'll help him strike against the King and he'll help us escape with the paintings. He tells us he has an escape plan on the roof and that we'll meet there. Brennus bribes his way onto the stage where a famous author will be giving a reading, a stage where the King of Spades will be as well, inviting Oberon onto the stage with him. During the reading, Brennus magically erases the writing that the author is reading from, the King stands to see what's happening, and Spirit, observing this from the security room, turns out the lights.

There's a struggle and when the lights come back on, Oberon's mask was removed, revealing that he had been the Joker all along. The King is dead and he announces to the crowd that he has a message - he refuses to side with Simon Hurt, the man who stands against everything that Batman stands for, because that was his job. And he won't rest until Hurt is dead.

Before the party can figure out there feelings about this reveal, they have to follow the plan. The rest of the party was stealing paintings while this was happening and if we didn't leave with the Joker, we would be caught. We meet him up on the roof where he has a helicopter stashed. A helicopter adorned with his face on the front of it. We all get in and Joker considers killing us all, but admits his heart just isn't in it. He's been depressed since Batman has gone missing and offers the party a deal that's hard to resist:

Help me, or I'll kill you.

We haven't met with Joker again since this moment, but he's still in Gotham, waiting for us and waiting to reveal what's next. There's a lot of complications that are coming with working with The Joker. We can't let Oracle know. Brennus is roommates with Harley Quinn (more on that later) who asks Brennus to punch Joker in the face. And then to kill him. Certainly, this won't go well for Brennus if he follows through. But Brennus being Brennus... well, we'll see what happens.

Hint for #32: This character is the member of a team within Z'onn Z'orr.

#32 - Parademon (K'Ray)

The first Secret Six member on my list!

The Secret Six is a group of villains who are against the Society. Their initial roster was Cheshire, Fiddler, Ragdoll, Scandal Savage, Deadshot and Catman. They were brought together by an unknown individual who goes by the name Mockingbird. Mockingbird keeps the Secret Six together by threats, bribes and fear. He has something that each of the six of them want and/or need, and he has the resources to give it to them... if they work with him to take down the Society. Most of them also have their own reasoning for being against the Society, so for a lot of them, this is win/win.

We quickly allied with the Secret Six and Mockingbird gave them, and us, a mission to go to Toronto, to defeat Steppenwolf. When we get there, we quickly learn this mission won't be possible. For thousands, if not more, of Parademons are dropping in the city and attacking it. The party separates from the members of the Secret Six who accompanied them and they tell us to scout the city, try to find any information we can on the Parademons and to not be heroes - stay alive.

We meet some Canadian heroes, some equated, some still fighting back and we make a decision to try to capture a Parademon - what better why to find out information than actually take one prisoner? Bloodfruit flies up to catch the attention of one of them, Brennus leaps on it's back and flies it into the side of the building and then Rosetta clubs it over the head. In teh scuffle, one of his antannae broke and this messed with his head. When Brennus goes to knock it out, he calls out to him "Vertigo!". Brennus stops and asks how he knows his father, but the Parademon is confused and can't answer him and introduces himself as K'Ray.

K'Ray, due to the broken antenna, has been an ally to us and the Secret Six since. His mental fortitude is childish. He's become closest with Ragdoll, who he thinks is a funny clown. He loves pain and is terrified of pleasure - if you want to threaten him for information it works better to attempt to give him a massage or tickle him. When the Secret Six found themselves needing more members, he was the natural addition. He will always listen to orders, especially if they come from Ragdoll. He absolutely fills the trope of a gentle giant, weirdly enough, and I think he's charmed most of the party. It's kind of weird to think though that the only reason he has this cooperative behavoir is because of the broken antenna which has basically given him brain damage. He gets confused very easily and has never truly been able to answer Brennus' questions about how he knows Vertigo. It seems that Vertigo must have been in Canada, that is where K'Ray was stationed, but that's the extend that he's been able to tell us.

I do think he's the Secret Six member who has the least screentime / development, but that doesn't make him any less likeable. He's become a fixture in the Secret Six and in Z'onn Z'orr and even Mockingbird has seemed to accept him as a team member.

Hint for #31: This character spends the most time with Saoirse.

#31 - Star Sapphire Ring (Starsa)

Hi there!

A sentient Star Sapphire Ring. What could go wrong?

Early in the campaign, the party fought a Star Sapphire who ended up getting killed by The Spectre. Her ring survived and came back to Z'onn Z'orr with us. It started off as cheery and happy to be included in our group. We promised we'd take her places with her and allow her to scan for a suitable person for her to bond with and turn someone into a Star Sapphire. She charmingly mispronounced names and bonded with Patch, quickly developing a love of playing hide and seek with the little rat.

In our travels so far, the best match we found is Wonder Woman. ...but an equated Wonder Woman. What would happen if we let Starsa bond with her? Would it break the equation and free Wonder Woman in addition to making her a Star Sapphire? Or would we take one of the most dangerous equated in the world and give them even more power? We're not sure and don't want to find out the hard way and are waiting and hoping that we find another suitable host that doesn't come with all that baggage attached to it.

But in the course of our travels and our scans, we learned that Starsa was dying. Her battery was depleting and she had no way to recharge here on Earth without a host. We would need to find a way to space, to return her to the Star Sapphire planet and get her a new battery, essentially. Even in the face of impending death, Starsa tended to stay cheery and optimistic, even more so when we recharged her energy briefly by setting up a meeting with the long deceased Juliet Capulet, who was destined to be Starsa's host before she died.

The party made it to space and after a brief detour being arrested by Green Lanterns and having to attain their own ship, a party took her to her home planet and recharged her, saving her life. But there's been some differences in Starsa since then. The Star Sapphires are... unsettling. Their view on love are simplistic and they won't listen to any other perspectives. And Starsa, being a Star Sapphire Ring, fully buys into their perspective. The party isn't sure about how closely to ally with Starsa's people. Starsa doesn't seem fully aware of the hesitance yet, but she's picked up on some of it and she's confused. Where does her loyalty lie? With Carol and the rest of the Star Sapphires or with the people who saved her life and have bonded with her?

There's also been some talk about the possibility that Starsa herself might be a potential host for a Star Sapphire Ring. I think this idea is fascinating, but Starsa is fully opposed to it. She doesn't want to elevate herself above other Star Sapphire Rings. The one time this topic was approached, she shut it down, but part of me hopes that it gets brought up again. The idea of a ring being a ring wielder... I would love to see what could come from that.

Hint for #30: A character that has been guessed for previous hints more than once.

Fwiw, Starsa hated the idea. To her, it's throwing away her purpose to separate herself from her sisters.

That does makes sense I suppose.

But, what if she also helped her sisters all become able to wield their own rings! There certainly wouldn't be any problem then.

But what of the rings they wield?

But the sisters are the rings.

If rings gain the ability to wield rings, then what determines which rings aren't being wielded? It creates caste stratification among what are generally not sentient objects.

I jest, but it's fun to think about. Even if Starsa is worthy it seems like the precedent it would set would be a complete nightmare.

Maybe you should get Starsa a different color ring.

She seems pretty hopeful, how about a blue?

Starsa has a green ring disguise. Its adorable.

#30 - Rover

I somehow feel like this is both too high for Rover but also not high enough.

Rover is Alice's dog. He's a goon. He's dumb but happy about it. Loyal to a fault. He would follow Alice absolutely anywhere she goes and on the instances where Alice gets injued (which are plentiful) he's right there by her side in the MedBay, unmoving until she wakes up and he can start showering her with kisses again. Alice is "mean" to Rover, always calling him a big dummy, but when she thinks no one is watching the smile she gives him is probably the purest thing about Alice.

Rover loves playing ball. But he's very particular about how to play ball. If you throw it and expect him to fetch it? Nope. He'll just stare at you. Why would you throw away a ball like that? You need to very careful roll it exactly to him. And then he'll use his nose to push it exactly to you. I've tried experimenting by missing slightly to make him go get the ball and the attitude that he gives in just a look is enough to make me decide never to do that to Rover again. How could I be so mean to him?

There's a lot of broken balls that Rover tries to play with sometimes. I think they're called Databalls? I'm not exactly sure what that's about but they tend to bounce into him and then run away, causing Rover to run to Alice or Brennus in absolute fear for comfort. That big dummy.

Rover also recently joined Passable Persuasions, a gang made up of animals who Data and Patch rudely declared could never fit in their gang. It's not a question what team Brennus will be on. But does Rover know he's in a gang? Tough question.

These characters were brought back to Z'onn Z'orr from the same city at the same time. When I was making my ranking, I couldn't decide which one I liked better. So I'm ranking them together because it's my list. Deal with it.

Alice calls Rover dumbass all the time, which I feel is also how many pet owners lovingly refer to their pets.

I want to say La Dama and La Llarona, but the wording makes me pause a bit

I think Encatnadora exposing La Dama's tricks carried some water for Brennus enough to at least make it an okay guess

Which made me pause, but they did leave from the same place and come in at the same time, so it counts from when they actually came to ZZ I think

#28 & #29 - S.T.R.I.P.E (Pat Dugan) and Stargirl (Courtney Whitmore)

Father and daughter may not be technically accurate, but from what I've seen between these two, Pat Dugan doesn't get hung up on a prefix like Step-. He is Courtney's father.

We went to Blue Valley to try to find STRIPE and Stargirl. We didn't know what the state of things would be, but we know if we could find them it would be a big win for our resistance. When we first arrive, we find a video talking about how Goth has taken over the minds of the children of Blue Valley.

Our first trace of Stargirl was not an encouraging one. Furies, Darkseid's elite equated female forces, come in sets of four in cities around the country. We see two of the Furies of Blue Valley talking to one another. Talking about how much they hate Stargirl, that they're supposed to be a set of Furies and Stargirl constantly acts like she's above them. It seems that Stargirl, like Wonder Woman and so many other great heroes, has been equated and brought into Darkseid's forces. Around the same time, we get a lead on STRIPE and decide to follow that, hoping to at least rescue him.

STRIPE's neighborhood is being patrolled by a group of ninja speedsters, but we disguise ourselves as Royal Flush Gang members to be able to move about them a little easier. We find the Dugan residence and peek into it, seeing the family inside has been equated. But while we're spying, Pat Dugan sneaks up behind Brennus and puts him in a headlock. Brennus convinces him we're here to help and after leaving some food for his family, he takes us to his secret base to talk more. His base is a bunker hidden under a broken down car. When we get down there, Brennus pokes his head back up to close the trunk of the car we crawled through... and is grabbed and pulled up by Stargirl.

There's a moment of panic. Furies are always tough fights and if she gets away, STRIPE's base is compromised. But... twist! She's resisted Goth's mental commands and is still a hero, acting as if she's a Fury to be undercover. Dugan gets her to come into the hatch and after explanations, we have two new allies. But we need to help them in Blue Valley before they'll return with us. Courtney is missing her belt that gives her full command over her powers. Dugan is missing his STRIPE suit. And their friend, Robotman, was captured. All three are in the same location - Goth's HQ. Long story short, in another session we infiltrate a Royal Flush Gang party in the town, deal with Goth's remaining Furies and Goth himself, gather up all the materials we were asked to get and escape in Dugan's plane to fly back to Z'onn Z'orr. Blue Valley has been legitametly one of my favorite locations we've been to.

STRIPE is very protective of Courtney. She may be a hero, but she's his daughter and she's a teenager. She gets exasperated at him in these moments but the love between the two of them is clear. They both want what's best for the other one, even if it means putting themselves in danger.

Courtney and STRIPE have gone on field missions with us occasionally and they're help has been monumental. These are heroes through and through and their dedication to the cause is one that will help us see things through to the end. Courtney has gotten more screen-time since being rescued, she's made friends with some fan favorite NPCs which gets her more involved and she also is part of an infiltration team that is being sent to Gotham to gather intel in the city. But even with this I still found myself leaning more towards ranking Dugan higher before I put them together. I think since becoming a dad myself, father characters resonate more with me. But either way, these two characters are welcome additions to the campaign and I look forward to more from them.

Hint for #27: This character's name is engraved on our memorial wall in Z'onn Z'orr.

I had no idea you were that high on Pat, I thought of them for a second then thought there was no way. That's really neat to see a connection with him

I think Brennus doesn't have much of a connection with him, but MI does.

One of the strongest ones we got so far. Honest, I thought we were going to only get to come back with one of them - Pat sacrificing or Courtney staying as a Fury.

Anyway, guess is the Fiddler.
