Man I want to live in Japan so badly!

Japan has pretty cheap housing outside of Tokyo

it's also ranked #2 in countries people want to move to (after Canada)

I remember reading that a lot of houses had some kind of issue in Japan once, but its been a while, so Im not sure exactly what.

Apart from the bottom left there's a chance these could be located in a far away village where the nearest train station are miles away.

I read most people buy the land in Japan and rebuild the house from scratch.

I'm going to take a guess those homes are well out of metropolitan areas.

That's what I've heard. They're in out of the way places with no local employment

They may be good for retirees or something who don't mind living in the middle of nowhere

Japan sometimes gives houses away for free. But I think only to Japanese citizens

Yeah they're all pretty remote and old people live there. That could work for some people who aren't as old. My Japanese professor retired to a remote beach town and does puppet theatre.

Much fewer regulations on building new housing, restrictions on regulations, flexible zoning laws, and the expectation that your house is to live in not a commodity.

Didn't Japan have its real estate craziness in the 80s?

Those are outside Fukushima

probably out in the middle of nowhere, you're paying twice that for a shoebox apartment in tokyo or any other metropolitan area

Considering how many cockroaches are in houses in Japan, it seems fair they should be cheaper.

These are going to be in small villages where the population decline has been particularly acute. (children moving to the big city, older people dying, etc)

There isn't going to be much in the way of public services, shopping (groceries), or medical facilities. So you'll need a car and you'll probably have to drive about an hour or more to get to anything.

(So if you break an arm, or sprain an ankle, etc, etc, etc... it won't be easy getting an ambulance out to you.)

Yes, but as others said, there likely in far off rural locations with a small populace, and poor transportation to the city.

Most would get board and regret it likely within a few weeks. Honestly, it feels like nobodys rural outside aside from America's are worth moving to for most people.

I think the urban houses are still a lot cheaper than what you find in Canada anyway... My friend was buying a house there a while ago, in a city iirc.

One of the reasons one of my followed streamers (Videogamesawesome) moved from Canada to Japan a few years back.

IIRC, they're on the outskirts of Tokyo, and living in a house a rather famous architect built.

My mother in law recently bought a condo in Kanegawa, the prices per square foot are probably like 80% what I'm seeing living outside Boston. So lower than America, but not exactly dirt cheap.

Apartment prices in Kanagawa is really cheap, but I think a lot of Americans would be shocked how small they are. Like a studio apartment size is the standard. My living room in America is he size is my wife's friend's apartment.

Small is good. Less to maintain

why is japan's infrastructure so concentrated, i mean they're such a small country anyway why not use it all?

Are they Japanese? Because you can't just buy property as a foreigner and move there. Otherwise, I think a lot of us would be flocking to these places...

Did remote working gain popularity in Japan much? Although I suppose these places could potentially have poor or no internet coverage.

I'd love to live there but Japan is very strict about letting westen foreigners living there, it isn't easy to migrate there.

Dude, it's the same in the US. Buying a house outside of a city is going to be considerably cheaper. When people normally complain about cost of living, that's almost entirely in cities.

That's gotta be out in the boonies tho right? It's not gonna be where the military bases are near Yokosuka or where some expats are in Roppongi.

You're not gonna want to live anywhere in Japan that's not at least near a major city unless you're Japanese or at least Asian (maybe)
