YouTube has shifted away from encouraging content creators from making genuinely interesting content. Several channels I used to love aren't as good anymore, not because I have changed, but because they aren't allowed to make content the same way they used to without running the risk of being demonetized.

And yet it's apparently completely okay for people to make false information and extremist videos. YouTube is currently facing a massive lawsuit regarding their promotion of extremist content, and I hope they lose.

One of the music creators I followed for a few years suddenly stopped making music at the peak of her popularity (she had just produced an album). Then like 2 years of nothing except streaming 0-1 times on Twitch a week. It was just weird. I saw a lot of other Youtubers that I watched in the mid to late 2010s do similar things.

Are all of those channels still active, or did some drop off from making content?

I agree with your former point but I don't think anyone at YT/Google is advocating for extremist content lol

It's unfortunate what happened but given the sheer volume of content that gets uploaded, they can't personally evaluate everything, and some things will inevitably slip through the cracks here and there. From what I understand, the recommendation system is based on the user's preferences and whatever content is recommended isn't personally endorsed by YT.

YT losing the suit would just make any sites allowing user-generated content worse for everyone. If sites themselves are legally responsible for anything their users upload then that forces sites to either moderate with an iron fist or shut down altogether.

Oh look another boring clickbait Youtube video trying to scare viewers because content creators are afraid of losing money. What a joke.

Bullshit. It's called a terms of use. YouTube actively allows extremists to not only post videos but also monetize them. Furthermore, YouTube's algorithm (which THEY created) promotes these videos.

YouTube has no issue removing monetization from videos that contain a swear word within the first 60 seconds. This proves that they also shouldn't have any issue removing monetization from extremist content or disinformation, and yet they don't act on that.

And as part of the ToS, YT also dictates what content is allowed on the platform. I don't think extremist propaganda is included.

While it can be argued that they aren't doing enough, they have in the past. The plaintiffs acknowledged as much. They were obviously too late this time, but it's not like they don't do anything about it.

And again, the solution is for YT to increase it's effectiveness in blocking the bad content, not to make sites (not just YT) liable for user content.
