Dhelmise - I'll never forget the first time I encountered this thing in the wild. Is it Steel? Water? Ghost? Grass? Any combination of the two? Who knows!

Azurill (post-Fairy) - Is it still Normal only? Normal/Fairy? Fairy only? WTF

The future Paradox Pokemon - they all look like they should be part-Steel...

Some event mythical Pokemon - Because I just can never access them, I even tend to forget about their existence.

I often think the Luxray line is part-Dark and it's made me waste a turn or worse before.

Milotic - not Ice-type
Gliscor - not Steel-type
Gothita line - not Dark-type
Litleo and Helioptile lines - Normal-type
Grapploct - not Water-type

Golett/Golurk - took me a full gen to realize they were Ghost/Ground.
Lurantis - fell for the "faux mantis" thing a lot in that they're not bug type at all.
Pineco/Forretress - until they were more common, I always thought they had grass as part of it.
Clobbopus - not part water.
Malamar - I STILL can't remember what their type is.

Groudon - not having any fire typing until its Primal form.

Mawile - I always think it's part Grass at least, and then my second guess is Rock, so I literally get both types wrong.

Not only is Fighting kind of a weird choice for it, but it's also completely eclipsed by Zacian. So I tend to just forget about it, despite playing Shield over Sword.

Drapion doesn't trip me up but I always thought Skorupi was Poison/Dark too

I can remember Drapion's but man I keep forgetting Skorupi's.

Others mentioned this that I also had difficulties with: Groudon, Grapploct/Clobbopus, Pokemon typing on typewriter or keyboards, Zamazenta, Lurantis

Oh and for an older species: Lugia. It doesn't have Water type.

A lot of the Ultra Beasts were weird in the beginning. Like Kartana and Blacephalon.

And Zacian/Zamazenta too. Like one of them is fairy type and there's a crowned form or something (I only play on Pokemon Showdown).

Also Gyarados was flying, I'm almost positive I've gotten that wrong before.

Its name is pseudo-wood-o. Its name means "fake wood." That's why it's not grass. It's a hard Pokemon like a tree, but it doesn't like water, which means it's rock type.

So in the games there's a specific item each has to have to enter the Crowned Sword/Shield form (it's the ones you see on the cover art), the Rusted Sword for Zacian and Rusted Shield for Zamazenta. If they don't have the item they're monotype fairy or fighting respectively; the items add steel to them. I don't think I've ever seen anyone using the non-Crowned form so it's easy to forget it exists.

Yeah, Kartana was another one that was pretty unexpected. Blacephalon was a bit hard to guess just from its appearance, but after learning about how it attacks and just how creepy it is, I could remember it.

Nihilego was another UB that kinda tripped me up at first too, though it makes more sense after learning its lore.

Lugia not being water type oft caught me off guard.

Back in Gen 1, Onix/Geodude both being immune to electricity made me think anything that looked rocky was immune.

Took me ages to notice Aerodactyl could be one shot by Thunderbolt.

The only rock types that weren't also ground in Gen I were the fossils, right? Weird decision there. I remember having the same issue with assuming ghosts were weak to psychic and ground thanks to the one ghost line also being poison.

Yeah can't blame anyone for that one. I don't believe any trainer uses the fossils (Which you could forget about by the time you get to Cinnabar) and the only trainer that uses Aerodactyl is Lance. So it wouldn't be too surprising for people to not figure out Rock is neutral to Electric when you get swarmed with Rock/Ground types.

And even if you knew Aero gets hurt by electric, you could assume "Oh, flying overrides the electric immunity?" because let's be real we believed a lot of dumb shit as kids (Mash A to survive attacks!). Sudowoodo would finally put any confusion to rest.

Speaking of confusion, shout out to Wooper. I'm sure many people were surprised when their electric move failed against it.

wooper and clodsire also definitely fit into the category of intentional trolls

At first I thought the topic title referred to pokemon names we often spell incorrectly.

I'm surprised there's not a sporcle quiz where you can try to get the type combo of every pokemon. I know there's plenty I'd mess up, even early gens, but I can't think of them offhand.

I think earlier evo stages are the worst offenders. Who can remember which ones start with dual typing vs. gaining it later, or occasionally even swap one out?

Trapinch = Based off an larval Antlion
Vibrava = Based off an adult Antlion
Flygon = Also based off an adult Antlion or possibly a dragonfly

At no point are any of these Pokemon Bug types

(Also Trapinch has the same Atk stat as Flygon which is funny)

I don't know if this necessarily counts but for a good long while I thought Ghost-type was weak to Psychic because I didn't realize the Gengar line was part Poison.

On the topic of fossils, it didn't help that the anime got it wrong. As I recall, a Kabutops shrugs off a Thunderbolt from Ash's Pikachu despite the fact it should've been super effective

It's ironic that all gen 1 rock types that are not ground are all weak against electric.

25 years later and I'm still not 100% sure which combination of Bug/Poison/Flying Venomoth is. I think it's the latter two.

these are the only ones from what's been posted so far that still trip me up, but to add a new one of my own, every time I get a "catch Grass-types" task in Go I forget that Burmy isn't going to count for it lol

i mean venomoth at a bare minimum would be incredibly weird to not be part poison because of the name. beedrill i get since butterfree gained flying but it's also just got its giant stingers and they're in its name so

anyway for me it's totally secondary normals that trip me up the most frequently, ultra beasts aside, because i still haven't gotten used to it being used as a non-primary dual type... type, yet. also i still forget snubbull/granbull changed to this day probably because i've actively never used them
