What the fuck? That's more than an IMAX ticket. I mean I have a nice home theater and all but fuck if I'm paying $25 to rent anything. I'm not sitting in front of a 60 foot tall screen.

But anyway, worth it?

It's not a mistake. They do this for very recent movies now. If it is still in theaters or just left like a couple weeks ago. They usually have a high rental price. You have to wait for it to go down. In a couple months maybe the rental price maybe will be 12 dollars. And then another couple months it will go down to 5 or 6 dollars

How do they justify being twice your average movie ticket price just to rent and watch on a TV?

I'm sure there are fools that will do it instead of paying the extra $5 to own it. Even that's too much.

They are saying that's the normal price to rent at home when the movie is still in theaters.

They charge more for the convenience of watching at home, in order to keep people going to the theaters. But for those unwilling to go to the theaters to see it at a reduced price, they charge more for it as a convenience tax.

Damn that's expensive, but for a family it's still cheaper than buying multiple movie tickets. If I buy 1 ticket for myself and 1 ticket for my 7 year old, that's $31.78 for the two of us. It's nearly $49.17 if my girlfriend also goes with us. And that's not including food.

So they know exactly what they're doing with that price

I've seen plenty of in theater rentals for $20. I thought that was the base price.

This is true, it would be cheaper than taking a whole family to the movies.

But you aren't going to the movies. It's a different experience that you pay a premium for. Not many people at home have 70' wide screens, 18" subwoofers and 15k watts of speakers.

They started doing this when COVID was a thing. It was to see if people would put their money where their mouth is and pay the premium to watch it at home over the cinemas.

Doubt it's gonna last much longer but it will mean it will take longer for the movies to be available digitally.

It's funny it feels like everyone forgot a couple of years ago when people were seriously arguing that we didn't need theaters anymore.

Im all for having digital access to movies, but Im annoyed it comes out on digital platforms first so if you order the bluray that includes a digital copy, you still have to wait. People would probably try to cancel preorders but I wish you could preorder the physical media but then get emailed a code when its available digitally.

There's been this inbetween phase, after a movie is out in theaters for a bit, but before it releases on bluray or streaming services, they offer up a $20-$25 rental. They've done it for a bunch of movies now, the new Dungeons & Dragons was that was a couple weeks ago also, the rental was $20.

I still think it's weird to put the rental price at $20 when the price to buy it is $25. Not sure what the point of that is. I could be wrong, but I feel like people who go to Amazon to make a purchase in order to watch the movie would rather just pay the extra $5 to be able to watch it any time in the future.
