I saw a clearer video and it definitely looks like waves breaking and the dude doesnt disappear in the video the guy filming moves and the swimming guy is under the netting.

Also, its so dark in the ocean at night that guy isnt going to see the shark unless it hits him or bites him. I've gone fishing and swimming in the ocean at night and its so easy to get lost.

I mean he probably was eaten by sharks but you cant see a shark in the video from what ive seen.

this is honestly I think the weirdest topic I've seen here for a long time. like, I've heard some wild conspiracy theories, but "the government keeps covering up shark attacks!" might be the dumbest one yet

I don't know if it is or isn't a shark there. However at night as other people have highlighted it might be hard for people to see it.

Thats a good question, but its hard to tell because so many CE users got banned and came back in alts, so you never know if someone is new or an alt

I know someone who was on a cruise ship and had a friend (not after that day) push him into the ocean at night because he thought it would be funny. He already had a known fear of deep water and refused to swim in it even in the best conditions. The ship was anchored, so at least he had that to his benefit.

As for the people adamantly saying it wasn't a shark, sorry, but y'all are seemingly being intentionally dense on this.

We clearly see him swimming towards the buoy, there's *something* that makes waves near the buoy, then he all of a sudden does a 180 and starts desperately swimming the other way. If it was just a wave it wouldn't have scared him like that and if he was pulled under by the current we would have seen him still swimming towards the buoy, just unable to reach it.

The people refusing to entertain that it was a shark(s) would have us believe that his mind just all of a sudden shit itself while he was already in the process of swimming towards his salvation, and that for no reason whatsoever did a 180 and booked it from the one thing that could save him. The only logical answer is that he deemed something more dangerous than being stranded at sea to be in the direction of the buoy.

While I wouldn't use the word "clearly" given the quality of the video, based off what I do see and his response it does overwhelmingly seem like a shark scared him away from the buoy and likely attacked him, even if they didn't eat him.

I also don't think it really matters how low the stats of an attack/death by shark are. They obviously happen to somebody and I don't think any victim of sharks had their final thoughts be, "statistically speaking this wasn't supposed to happen to meeeeee". Same thing when people try to point out how "statistically low it is for you to die in a mass shooting". Those stats bring no comfort or clarity in the end for the people who are unfortunate enough to make them.

It also feels pointless that so many people keep saying "sharks don't usually eat people, they don't like the way we taste" because that makes it sound like nobody is eaten by sharks, when we know that's just not true. Again, just because it has a low statistical probability doesn't mean it never happens, it could just be we're witnessing one of those rare cases. It's not like the sharks themselves are going to weigh in to confirm.

The people saying the breed of shark matters is also important, because there are species, such as Tiger, that are way more adamant about killing you than a nurse shark would be, and dangerous shark species are known to inhabit those waters.

I feel terrible for both the teen and his family. Yes he did a very stupid thing most likely fueled by alcohol & peer pressure. He's a teen, our brains don't stop developing until we're 25, so his risk:reward processing was likely skewed, exacerbated by the alcohol.

I don't know which would be the better end, I've drowned before but it was a very quick & painless process, not what he would have experienced here. The shark attack would be more violent, but also possibly quicker.

I'm like 80% sure it's a shark but if you're drunk and jump into the ocean at night, what are the odds you can see anything except blurry lights? I don't see much panic in his movements. It seems like he thought he was going the right way towards getting help but was wrong.

That's the thing, he was going the right way. He wasn't so far away that he couldn't have least been able to tell which direction the ship was in. Especially since I'm pretty sure the ship wasn't in some total blackout mode. Even if he lost sight of the buoy he hadn't lost sight of the ship, which he knew was the only direction he could go for rescue.

Just because he's drunk I don't see why he would go from doing the right thing to the completely wrong thing for absolutely no reason. Like I said, you'd have to believe his brain just shit itself for no reason and told him to do the complete opposite of the success he was currently having of swimming towards the buoy.

It definitely felt like he was trying to swim away, the reason you don't see panic in his movements could be from the fact that he recognizes it's a shark and he knows erratic panicked splashing attracts them. It seemed like he was swiftly and calmly trying to swim the other direction, but by that point he was already spotted.

I just feel like regardless of how drunk or disorientated he was he still would have been able to tell that much. I liken it to running around a track while drunk (which sounds like a total nightmare), even in that situation & drunken state the track would flip around all of a sudden in such a fantastic and nonsensical way that it would be hard to dismiss and believe the person would just keep running it as if it were logical.

Pends on the shark. Yeah, many sharks recognise moving ships as a food source, but white tips have been proven to recognise and seek out the sound of sinking ships. Sinking ships usually mean actual people to eat.
