it could've been a shark. but with that footage, it also could've been a ghost, or albino bigfoot. or flat earth.

Because most people that fall off boats aren't reported right away, so the boat can go quite far away or the sea the person fails into is extremely cold, so they can't survive really long. In this case it was reported almost immediately and the water is quite temperate. Plus it helps that that this occurred in a calm set of ocean, so the kid would have a reasonable time spotting the boat's lights and could swim towards it. Probably could see the boat a mile or two away if it was a clear night. If not, he could wait for the day to come & chopper. If the kid didn't get attacked by sharks he would've more likely than not survived the ordeal given the circumstances.

This does make it more apparent, but also it's pretty damn apparent just by listening to the people's reactions. They immediately go from laughing about "this kid jump off the boat!" to a woman literally screaming and people going "oh shit, oh fuck!" simultaneously with him spotting the shark.

When you're In the moment like that, someone making a comment like that kind of makes sense. Just think, you're partying, enjoying yourself on a boat, everything is chill and good. Then some dude shows off and jumps into the water like a hooligan. What's the VERY, VERY first thing that comes to your mind? Damned idiot is what. It's only moments later you and everyone else realizes the danger he is in, and that's when you feel the bad for him.
