https://www.ign.com/articles/chocobo-gp-gets-rid-of-its-free-to-play-version-and-microtransactions-final-fantasy AKA how the game should have been from the very beginning. You can now unlock all of the characters, costumes, and other unlockables, including ones that were previously tied to certain seasons that had passed and were no longer available, just by playing the game. While it's exciting that players turned off by the microtransactions and free-to-play mechanics of Chocobo GP may now have a reason to check out the game, Square Enix did announce back in December 2022 that there will be "no further large scale updates (e.g. new characters or new maps) to the game after the Season 5 update on Wednesday, December 21, 2022." You could always unlock everything through play, but the grind was *insane* if you didn't pay (like, MMO players would blush the numbers were so unreasonable) so I'd need to see how they changed things on that front to say anything. Otherwise the racing was kind of garbo and unbalanced. They got rid of what made the OG fun and by and large this was just a letdown for fans of the original. I guess they didn't attract enough whales and flopped, but someone finally said "hey, what if we just sell it like a normal game instead?" Or maybe that they already sell enough microtransactions to cover the game cost, and now they're selling it as offline to gain extra money while not spending anymore on server cost and development for new contents.
