i never really connected with gear 4 as much as the other forms

gear 5 put a huge smile on my face though, it's so goofy and perfect for luffy

I prefer Gear, Metal.

Anyway still enjoying Undead Murder Farce and nothing else from this season. Some people elsewhere are hyping up the new Bang Dream which I tried but was turned off some by the animation and some of the character voices. Will try to push through at some point though. Not sure there's anything else worth considering.

Mushoku Tensei still the only thing I'm watching this season, but there are several shows I want to check out.

2 will always be my favorite for how it was revealed and utilized. 5 is super close though.

I thought 4 sucked for a long time but it's grown on me, especially if it's not his main thing anymore.

Speaking of not goblins, I'm in my re-watch phase after Sonny Boy, and stuff like Quintessential Quintuplets was the trashy, yet fun and dumb romance I needed. I kept putting off the new seasons, but I can probably rush through this show in about a week. I need to catch Classroom of the Elite again, plus some other things. Maybe a rewatch of Casshern Sins if I'm sick of fun junk and want to be depressed.

But hey, gotta have some fun watching old shows from time to time.

Oh hey, I started reading quintuplets recently. Tried it years ago and wasn't in the mood so I'm giving it another go.

It's such an easy watch. I finished the manga super quick after seeing Season 1. It feels weird waiting so long to see what the anime version did.

My Ghibli journey continues. Sadly, they can't all be winners. First, I tried to watch Only Yesterday, and I only made it about ten minutes. I'm usually a fan of slice-of-life anime, but my god I was instantly bored while watching this. Near as I could tell, the movie was about the disjointed recollections of some girl's boring childhood. I stopped watching when she started reminiscing about The Beatles. This movie would probably be nostalgic if I were Japanese and alive in the 60s, but I didn't think I was going to get anything out of it. Plus I hated the art style. Main girl aged thirty years every time she smiled.

After giving up on that, I watched the most famous Ghibli movie, Spirited Away. And... I mean, it was better than Only Yesterday, but I still didn't like it. It had some charm in the world and in the animation, but that was about it. Most of it felt like it was just being weird for the sake of being weird. I kept watching, waiting for all the stuff that was happening to click together. Then I laughed out loud when the movie finally had its big reveal. It turns out Chihiro almost drowned as a kid and Haku was the river? Uh... okay? Why is the music swelling like this is some big heartwarming revelation? It's just random. I didn't even know about this character-defining drowning incident until literally right now. And what was the deal with No Face? He came out of nowhere, was obsessed with Chihiro, and then he just kind of stopped being obsessed with her and stayed with the witch. I dunno, this whole movie just felt really random. I didn't get a whole lot out of it.

I don't know if not liking Spirited Away will be controversial here or not. All I know is that it won an Academy Award, so presumably a lot of people liked it. Not me though. Give me Castle in the Sky or Whisper of the Heart any day.

I think the animation is one of the biggest things going for it. All of ghibli is a very different kind of storytelling than what we're used to in the west, but i don't have the cultural context to know how other things out of Japan at that time compared. I'm no film expert but it feels to me like ghibli movies all have a more meandering plot than other modern media.

Spirited Away is definitely not among my favorite Ghibli movies.

It's also not confirmed if White Fox is doing Re:Zero Season 3.

Gotta wonder how that studio is doing. Most of the talent has been funneled into Studio Bind to work on Mushoku Tensei, hasn't it?

Well one would hope that Re:Zero S3 would actually BE Bind with how much staff went there, in which case it's going to look better than ever. Not outside the realm of possibility!

Finished with Spring anime at last! Final writeups and ranking:

Dr. Stone: New World - great season of a great show. It's disappointing that they end in the middle of things; wish this hadn't been a split cour. Always love the inspirational science moments. The scenes with Senku's dad rule.

Ranking of Kings: Treasure Chest of Courage - not sure how much of this is filler and how much is canon. The first two episodes sucked and I wish I skipped them. After that, it's fairly enjoyable though. Nothing comes close to the better parts of the first season, but it's worth watching overall (but please, skip those first two eps).

My Clueless First Friend - Very heartwarming. Never stopped being funny and cute. All around great cast with solid development as the show goes on.

Dead Mount Death Play - Reverse isekai is the way, apparently, since this ruled. Awesome main character, and a fun supporting cast, but not overly huge like in some of Narita's works. Has a nice tinge of darkness to it that separates it from other series of its ilk. Surprised it wasn't more popular.

Mashle - This was somehow better than expected despite falling short of its potential. The Harry Potter ripoff setting is a lot of fun. Mash is a great protagonist, and the show's basically always fun whenever he's around. But the supporting cast is awful and gets way too much screentime. Lance is boring and Dot sucks. They don't deserve to have their own fights without Mash around.

I'm still stuck finishing shows from Winter, but I watched a few episodes of Otaku Elf recently and was thoroughly disappointed. I'll still probably finish it, but I'm not surprised to see it ranked so low.

I liked Otaku Elf a lot at the beginning but got pretty bored with it halfway through.

I don't dislike them that much but their is a gulf of quality between fights that Mash is in versus not. As the series progresses I think they get more screentime but the Mash stuff gets even better at least.

The problem with a series like Mash is the same problem with One Punch Man. Protagonists like that are, at their core, gimmicks - and gimmicks get tiresome quickly. To counteract that, you have to create an interesting supporting cast so that the OP main character doesn't get stale. One Punch Man does a better job at this but I think it still suffers from the same core issue of trying to make a serious gag series.

Yeah, the difference there is that OPM's side cast is streets ahead of Mashle's.

Now that I'm done with Quintuplets, I think I can safely say it's a top 3 show all time for me. It's got some clunky storytelling (specifically the ending), but I don't know any other anime (and the manga was like this too), where I just wanted more. I just spend hours thinking, "I don't want to be doing anything except reading another chapter or watching another ep right now." The fact that I can know how the manga ends, go into the anime, and still be sucked in all over again is a rare feeling. I even spent the last half hour or so reading Reddit threads about this to kind of gather thoughts and vibes around it. I almost never do that sort of thing.

It's not perfect by any means, but I don't know if I've had such a visceral reaction to a show like this before. SpyxFamily is probably the closest.

I'm not a big fan of how this looks TBH. The overly animated feel of the higher budget One Piece episode doesn't land much for me most of the time. I think Red Roc is the only time it really looked great to me, but I really did love that Red Roc scene! It got me back into reading the manga again.

Also Jesus fucking christ the Kaido fight has lasted more than a full fucking year, this show is unwatchable.

when you factor in manga breaks, the manga version of the fight was roughly the same length of time passed as the anime (49 chapters vs. currently 56 episodes)

Less than 1 chapter per episode for an arc that was already 50-75 chapters longer than it should have been.

This fight will end up lasting around one and a half times as long as the entirety of the anime for the Alabasta arc. THE WHOLE ARC. The manga chapter count for the fight is also around the same length as the entire Alabasta arc, so it's not just an anime problem.

This isn't OK. This is a problem.

Gear 5 is cool, I'm into how it is animated, but I agree with it being a little hard to follow and my god is the anime slow.

I think a big part of the problem when they animate like this is that's it's so jarring with the absolutely horrendous sound direction OP still and always has had.

Not the VA work of course, though Luffy sounds very strange at the front of this clip, but as has been brought up many times before the sound effects are fucking abysmally. The decision to toss those repeating bells noises in there in the middle? Whoever made thar call should be in jail.

Luffy was dancing on that roof for like twelve minutes or something
