...Does it even cost them any money when someone installs a Unity game? I could at least kind of understand an entity like Steam doing something like this because they're the ones handling the 100 gig downloads, but even there I'd think it was bullshit price-gouging and it would quickly kill PC gaming.

A gacha game can implement an option to wipe account data so that rerolling doesn't require a fresh download. Definitely possible for new ones but I'm not sure how much effort it would be to bolt that on to an existing game.

So obviously Unity is dead moving forward, absolutely no one will want to make a new game with it. However, I'm worried this will lead to a mass de-listing of games that already exist. It's not like the Hollow Knight devs earn anything when I install it on a new computer, what incentive do they have to even stay on the market anymore?

it is retroactive. It is part of the licensing agreement to distribute software that uses unity

There's no more reliable communication from the company right now but it seems to be at least retroactive when determining games that qualify, and would just start charging for any installs of them after the start date.

When you get charged for all the pirated copies, you can report it to Unity and they'll decide whether to waive the fee or not.

So as a dev you just have to "trust them" that they'll have the numbers right anyway.

I wonder what are the odds that if you disagree with the charges they send you, or if you suspect they're in bad faith (people spamming installs maliciously), that they'll agree with you vs. that they'll just say you you're wrong, won't let you see their data to compare, and tell you to go fuck yourself and pay up.
