Is this going to be another topic where Outer Wilds dominates? Think I played it more on the recs of a few gaming podcasters with tastes I trust before I realized just how beloved it is here. But I definitely saw it mentioned. That's my current answer until I think of something more fitting.

Maybe the Trails series will be high up as well?

In recent history and first thought, is Kitana Zero.
Was gifted it during this past B8 Santa and it was a great game.

But I feel like there is something more significant from years ago.

Definitely Phoenix Wright for me

Phoenix Wright series is one I'd have never touched otherwise and that's probably a narrow 2nd place.

Honestly a tie between Ace Attorney and Umineko. Both absolutely fantastic experiences and it probably would've been many years before either one would catch on enough to get on my radar back then. Most of the other big B8 games like Persona, Trails and Outer Wilds I either tripped on myself or was led to by other influences.

World of Horror, From Next Door, or Saya no Uta

Excluding Game of the Month Club/Steam Secret Santa since someone brought that up, I haven't played/bought that many because of B8. The very first one that I can recall was Persona 3 FES around 2010, and that probably remains the best? I got super burned from that point forward (God Hand, NieR, Ever17) that I pretty much never sought out game recs from the board as a whole lol.

Either AA, Umineko, or Yakuza 7.

AA has been such a solid series and was the first to come to mind since the latest games I played (TGAA and TGAA2) were so great.
Umineko really evoked many emotions throughout the years. And had some of the most memorable characters.
Yakuza 7 is just really fun and had the best gameplay.

The difference for me here is that I know I would have been recommended Chrono Trigger through other avenues at some point. Odds are I never would have touched Ace Attorney if not for Board 8/GameFAQs.

Danganronpa was my first reaction. (As well as AA and 999, but DR >.)

My limited slate of Falcom games are due to B8, but I doubt they supercede. If they do, then Trails of Cold Steel 1 is the pick there.

There's a not unreasonable argument that Genshin Impact qualifies here. I don't remember the exact sequence that got me playing that game, but I hadn't heard of it until the day it launched, when a lot of different people were talking about it. Considering I'm not on social media, I imagine most of that influence had to have been from here. I know I finally got put over the edge by hearing a streamer I followed at the time talking about it, but I wouldn't have even known or cared what it was (and it was an incredibly hurdle to get past the fact that it's a gacha game, which I swore I would never ever not ever touch under any circumstances whatsoever) if I hadn't heard people buzzing about it here first.

There's also quite a few games I've picked up as an indirect result of VGMC, so there might be a game there that was really good that I stumbled across. There are certainly some games from VGMC that I've started that others consider really good, like Outer Wilds and CrossCode. The only game I can think of currently that I might put down here is Hollow Knight. However, I'm not sure how much of that is genuinely Board 8 influence.

Is Outer Wilds a particularly board 8 game? I checked it out because a lot of people seem to consider it an all-timer, and B8 hasn't felt beyond the reception I have seen elsewhere.

played Ace Attorney well before posting on board 8, and Trails back on the PSP when it wasn't popular at all here

can't entirely recall but I feel like B8 put me on the track for Shadow of the Colossus so will give the credit there

Fire Emblem is the first to come to mind. The Spring '04 contest contributed to that too, I'm sure.

Trails in the Sky: Second Chapter if that counts (technically it was Leon's one-on-one friendship that made it happen).

Those two instantly came to mind for me. Then I read the topic and saw some Umineko replies. I liked Umineko even more but it's hard for me to think of that as a game.

I'm into nearly everything mentioned in this topic BUT it was either before it caught on here or totally independent of it.

Apart from all the big ones already mentioned I will throw out Lufia 2. I absolutely love that game and never would have heard of it.

Can't really think of any other good games I played from here. I only remember absolute garbage ones like Tales of Symphonia and Danganronpa. I did try Trails in the Sky and I could tell it was good, just too slow for me.

I might have heard of FE4 from here as well. Especially since the only way to play is through an emulator with a translation patch, so I don't know where else I would have heard of that. That's up there with Undertale for sure. I also played FE7 from here and that sucked hard.
