We voting today chaps?

The full GOP conference will hear from all nine members on Monday night for a candidate forum. And all will be under intense pressure to present a pitch that can bring together an exasperated House GOP that is rife with division. Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) nodded to the greater conference dynamics in a Sunday letter announcing his bid.

Throughout my life, I have been a fervent proponent for teamwork and the greater good over individual gain, Meuser said.

Republicans will then vote behind closed doors on Tuesday morning, where they are expected to slowly whittle down the nine candidates through multiple rounds of voting to two final choices. Whoever ultimately wins a majority in that final round will become the conferences third speaker-designee since McCarthy was ousted earlier this month.

Emmer replaced Michele Bachmann in Minnesotas 6th district. Bachmann chose not to run in 2014 because she was so fucking insane she likely was not going to survive another election.

Had she stayed on and still won, she would probably still be in Congress because Trump came around and normalized her brand of lunacy.

Just the way this is being structured lends itself to failure.

It's not gonna be any different from how Scalise and Jordan were the final two, Republicans picked Scalise, Jordan supporters refused to vote for him, then Republicans picked Jordan, and he was sabotaged by holdouts in revenge.

The precedent is set that the institutionalist wing of the GOP and the MAGA wing won't vote for each other's candidates. There's too much bad blood.

Well, all they need is a compromise candidate and five Republicans.

Several Republicans are saying they're against granting additional powers to the speaker pro tem (including the speaker pro tem) and I kinda get why because that takes the urgency away from electing a speaker and the Republican infighting could just keep going until Democrats have the majority in the House again.

But it seems like that's what's going to happen anyway. If it does, if they can't decide on a speaker, they're running up against a deadline to avert a shutdown in 25 days. If there's still no speaker and Republicans won't empower the speaker pro tem to get a spending bill through then the narrative is going to be that Republicans shut the government down because they were too mired in their own internal power struggle to actually govern as the majority party in the House.

The base is going to believe what Fox/Newsmax/OAN tells them either way. If a shutdown happens, everybody else will be able to see it's a result of Republican dysfunction which is not great for Republican Reps who aren't in safe districts.

I really don't know. If you told me ten years ago this middle school bullshit would be happening in congress on the daily I wouldn't believe it. I think the time crunch will force their hand but how they get to the full vote count when they have the hardline MAGA cultists in there is going to be slow and difficult.

I just honestly don't get where the moderates who protest voted think this is going to go.

MAGA doesn't actually care if the government shuts down. Many of them voted for it to. The threat of a shut down isn't gonna make them cave.

Do they think Dems are gonna cave instead? Are they delusional? lol

I suspect that will change after this upcoming general election, but really, time will tell.

You're probably right.

I think some of those people might be done with electoral politics for good after Trump is gone. They'll be no less political, just not as interested in making their point at the ballot box. Which could be another problem.

If they drop Trump they more than likely lose 2024

But like you said, it's pulling off a band aid. They can probably recover in time for 2028 (unlikely but possible) but if they stick with this Trump stuff they'll more than likely keep losing.

The issue is I don't think they quite grasp how much the left/moderates hate him. As long as Trump and people like him are on the ballot Democrats would drag their dicks through a mile of broken glass just to vote against them.

Once again, why are we paying these fuckers?

I propose a new rule: Every day, at least one Speaker vote is mandatory. Each day no new Speaker is elected, anyone that didn't vote for the candidate that won the most votes loses their pay.

And yes, I tailored the conditions to single out the Republicans while still keeping the text of the rule generic enough for plausible deniability.

Do people really not understand that a rule like this would change nothing? Very few of the reps are living paycheck to paycheck or even care that much about the ~170k salary, and any that did become financially troubled by this would immediately find themselves with dozens of lobbyists offering to help them out. Compensation and Lobbying need to be reworked from the ground up (and should be) before anything like this would remotely effect anything.
