Yeah. now that I know the term, this is quite the funny situation.

I dont think the comic is actually funny.

but this entire couple of posts here, in hindsight, are pretty funny at my expense.

Okay. Googled some more. Winds up this was a comic from 2014. Not sure why suddenly in 2021 there are a bajillion articles dissecting this comic. I assume it had a sudden surge in popularity, that I somehow missed. Why the sudden popularity? Dont know. Probably not going to find out.

I still dont know why specifically a sea lion was chosen for this metaphor. It seems like it was just a random selection and not based on any particular traits of a sea lion. Im going to assume I will also not get a real answer out of that. 2014 was the era of random humor on the internet so I guess that was just part of the randomness.

I still dont think the comic is really effective though because the sealion is technically correct. And if you want to make fun of the sealion, you probably dont want that.

I mean this is legitimately a critique people had about civil rights leaders. Cant they protest somewhere where I dont have to hear about it? Im tired of hearing about how people are discriminated against. Etc etc.

like no. The point of messaging is to make sure people hear it over and over again. You dont want to hear people call you terrible, then dont do terrible things.

so anyway. Yeah. I think Ive exhausted all my thoughts on the issue.

was a fun discussion, even if it was really just me typing my entire train of thought as I discovered this. I know I talk a lot. Still. Thank you everyone.

The sealion itself was a non-sequitur. The comic is a joke about terminally online people who are "just asking questions" trying to debate you in bad faith and just won't stop.

okay, I tried really hard not to respond to this. But it physically hurt so I need to say this.

I understand that is what the just asking questions people do. They bring up a stupid conspiracy point with no evidence just to ask questions.

thats not what the sealion in this comic does. The person making the ridiculous claim without evidence is the human. They split the metaphor between two characters and muddied it.

Okay. How to fix this? Hold up.

panel 1: so lets start with the people having a normal conversation that in no way involves sealions. Like I dont know, the sky is blue.

panel 2: sealion pops up with random bs claim about whatever. Its clearly ridiculous and false. Like the sky is actually plaid and what if the only reason you think its blue is because the aliens dont want you to see plaid because our plaid is not real plaid. What? Im just asking questions.

Proceed with the rest of the comic as normal.

now the human is not at fault for any of this. Now the sea lion is not in any way shape or form in the right. Now the point is more clear and defined, and can not be easily mistaken as a counter arguement against calling out racism.

seriously, I have a masters in marketing and I teach a class on propaganda. This is legitimately one of the few areas where I feel Im pretty well versed in and can successfully analyze. This comic, as is, argues for the opposite point its trying to make.

okay. I think theres nothing else I can say on this issue. Im going to have lunch now and try not to think about this comic. Love you all. Goodbye.

This post from that screen grab

Because some of them fundamentally misunderstood what there job is. They think their job is to sow chaos and build a conservative social media following to become an influencer.

Imagine being this close to getting it and not getting it. 400+ upvotes too.

Good god, its no wonder why grifting them is so profitable. Its just right there in front of their faces and they still fall for it every time.

On the Politics board it became a go-to for addressing the actions of sealions in threads by outlining their behavior in the form of a political cartoon. Just because it's from 2014 doesn't mean we can't use it now when it's relevant. That's some weird logic.

I seem to recall you posting on that board, surprised you never saw it.

The GOP congress is literally currently blaming the Democrats for not saving them from themselves.

"It's the Democrats fault we're so shit"

They're saying that without irony. Blaming the Dems for not voting for a Republican Speaker.

Even in their internal logic it doesn't hold up, why don't the Republicans just vote for a democrat speaker?

Mmhmm.

I haven't gone to that sub (or the opposite one for that matter) but just from what you guys are saying there's nothing to be happy about here. It's worse than it's ever been, as they're still trying to find some scapegoat for their failure other than their horrible values and policies.

I mean yes, I can certainly understand the amusement, don't get me wrong, but this is not a good thing, big picture. Sorry for being a party pooper.
