That's strange. I know the youth today love things to be "wholesome" but I didn't think they would straight up not want sex or romance.

I understand being annoyed with shoving romance into everything, but it's still part of the human experience. Shouldn't get rid of it entirely.

Why are younger zoomers and Gen Alpha becoming so puritanical? Bah, excuse me while I go yell at a cloud. >_>

As a millennial, I'm the opposite. It used to drive me nuts as a kid where a lot of kids shows hinted at characters liking each other, but then nothing actually happened. So when shows like Kim Possible actually made the ship happen, it was like "Finally!"

Haha, that's why I don't care about so-called romance in shonen anime, because it never goes beyond hinting they might like each other.

If I want to watch people fucking, I'll watch porn.

Otherwise I don't care to know that they're fucking. You can be in a relationship and not fuck.

Idk I don't need my movies or TV shows to be (needlessly) titillating.

It's more about simplicity then anything else. I can see a charm to it. Especially with how the outside world is.

Its an understandable phase.

I view it more as asexual. My own kid doesnt like romance in media. We definitely arent a religious household, technically Catholic but we never go to mass. Dont hide the fact that her father and I lived together before marriage and she can put 2 and 2 together.

Part of the problem is that boys are so immature/trash nowadays. Dont know if online learning during COVID made that worse.

I think the perfect example of this is Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.

They were perfect as platonic friends. It was unique and a great dynamic when you add in Joker.

In my opinion, its way less interesting with them being a couple.

Also, man/woman platonic friendships dont happen frequently enough.

Maybe but it can easily be a way to preserve them in media. After all if there is less push for romance in general why be against queer people existing.

Because it stifles and sanitizes queer expression. We're going back to 1950s shit

Maybe me and my fellow asexuals are taking over. Let me check if removing sex and romance is part of the EroAce world domination plan.

I kid. Of course we wouldn't do that. Sex and romance is a needed distraction that helps us in our world domination plans. We want more in media not less.

Only this is sanitizing everything for the sake of simplicity. This is a very different thing. This isn't being forced on anyone. Its just a phase based on the current state of the world. There is no sinister master plan.

Except for the one by me and my fellow asexuals of course and that includes more sex and romance in media.

The recent Teens & Screens report conducted by The Center for Scholars & Storytellers at UCLA found that 47.5% of teens and young adults ages 13-24 think that sex and romance are too prominent in TV shows and movies, and 51.5% want to see more content focused on friendships and platonic relationships, with 39% saying they particularly want to see more aromantic and/or asexual characters (ace/aro) on screen. A near majority of those surveyed felt that romance in media is overused (44.3%).

Why are you old farts complaining?

Depends on the show or movie but forced romance or forced sex scenes really do feel out of place.

I think they were more popular before the internet porn age where seeing people fuck in a TV show was risque

But now you can watch TV shows about people slowly being tortured to death on the front page of Netflix and suddenly 2 people fucking just seems quant.

I mean why did Life of Pi need a romance story?
Why did Twin Peaks need a raunchy sex scene?

I feel like attributing this to puritanism is really missing the point.

We're living in a world that is growing increasing online, enabling online friends and relationships at the cost of offline ones. The recent covid lockdowns have certainly not helped this feeling of isolation. People are waiting until later in their lives to start being concerned about long-term romantic relationships, marriage, etc.

So you've got these people who are not worrying so much about a partner but really just want to have some buddies they can chill and goof off and etc etc with. And then you go over to media and if a bunch of it is romance stories and no one really has any true friends, only workplace relationships and romantic relationships, of course this audience is going to be disappointed

If gen z and alpha want less sex and romance in media, I wonder if its partly a result of the media catered to millennials and gen x. Was our media tiring to them?
That and a general distrust in others in real life would might make media escapism prefer platonic relationships. Like, while friendships existed in media, their power wasnt always explored through the the true and highs and lows and only practicality of the situation. As society and life becomes more unstable, friendships become more valuable and may have longer term importance to the individual than a romantic or sexual relationship.

Like Reservation Dogs was interesting because the teens were never running through relationships like Gossip Girl. The audience isnt even given a long-detailed description of the one characters romantic past that affects them in the present day. The one lead character to end up in a relationship has that occur slowly in the background, and its not even a pin t of focus between him and his friends but instead their adult families. The adults on the show however were all horny on main.

The trashy sex scenes say Netflix has I can agree with, like we get it.
