HS time were some of the best times in my life, though enough people are still traumatized from their experience that I am concerned for the state of education still.

No. I was the one doing the traumatizing. Not even the teachers were safe from my relentless bullying. My only rival was the teacher who didn't give a fuck and would headbutt students.

What does this have to do with PTSD? Or the proven negative effects the school system has on many people?

I believe that you can get over trauma once you accept that life is ultimately meaningless. From there, you can construct your own meaning and get over the trauma.

HS was okay. I had friends, did okay I school, but I was pretty sheltered before that so I experienced somewhat of a culture shock and had identity issues. My grades and concentration suffered because of it. Going to college away from home was the best thing that ever happened to me. I made life long friends, really found myself, became social, met my wife, enjoyed my life while also being successful in school.

All in all positive experience but it made me very good at hiding my emotions.

High school sucked, but not having to work nor financial responsibilities was great. While there were many things that upset me in high school, none really gave me anything worse for the long-term other than me making the statement "I hate that person and believe they're a piece of trash."

My current job I think has given me trauma that has perpetually grown worse inside my mentally-stunted mind.

Most people get traumatized in some way. Most of the kids in high school are sociopaths with little to no empathy.

I was relentlessly bullied in school, and then again at home. My "dad" was an abusive monster and my mom was an absent drunk. I fucking hated school, and skipped it once I got my driver's license. Got a job at 16 and paid for night school/summer school so I could graduate. All pointless.

High school was pretty bad for me. But I wouldn't say it traumatized me. More like I was already being traumatized at home and the high school stuff just doubled down on it. It really just agitated me due to things I was dealing with outside.

Though, if I wasn't already in bad shape it likely would've gone it. It was rough.

Middle school was a rough time due to the way they organized the school district. Tons of kids getting introduced to each other as like 4 different elementary schools merge into a single middle school. However by the time we all hit high school my class really fucking mellowed out and I quite enjoyed my time in high school.

Is that not common in the US?

Most early year schools in the UK are a lot smaller so when you move to big school you always have multiple groups of people mixing. School I worked at had six feeder primary schools. Cohort for a primary school here is like 30 or 60 per year Group. Upper school is closer to 180 per year Group.

One thing I've realized as I've become an adult is not assuming everyone I run into has had the same grade school experience, so while it might be a common thing it really isn't something I personally know to be true for everyone in America so I felt like describing it. =P

High school had ups and downs, but was overwhelmingly positive for me. Mostly due to having an awesome girlfriend at the time. I even went to a school-sponsored local gathering of alumni two days ago. Yet, I recognize not all my friends from back then had the same experience.

If you had a relatively trauma and stress free life, that's great... but everyone is different and you just come off as edgelord adjacent telling people to "just get over it".

Thats how my middle school was, but a lot kids who played sports already new each other. My first high school was more mellow, but perhaps only because everyone had figured out their cliques and stuff.

If you think about it, it's some of the most honest years of your life.

As adults we generally need to behave in a certain way to function in society, to keep a job and stay out of jail. School kids represent what humans really are. Hateful bullies who dogpile on the different and the weak. It's instinctual.

Forcing a bunch of people with nothing to lose and no sense of responsibility into the same building for 13 years is a bad idea and bound to create some trauma.

It was good til I got ill from outside sources and moved schools (not gonna go in details)and a person who I was friends with in the old high school made fun of me and text me rude crap calling me dumb when they had no idea what actually happened but besides that one person and me disliking the new high-school cos i had nobody i knew there i was pretty happy in highschool before that. I'd say I was pretty well liked in High school tbh though surprisingly from the horror stories I heard of hs before I got there everyone was pretty friendly with each other

Thats fair. I do appreciate the effort. Being from the UK so often things I post get misconstrued or accusations get thrown due to the way we do things differently or just the fact people assume Im from the US. Wish more people had your approach.

Working crappy jobs, the hateful bully part doesnt disappear.

School faculty at least seem more likely to defend students who have been harmed than places where one is employed.

Aside, anyone else hate how k-12 was like you cant do that in college or as an adult about trivial things like eating in class or drawing on the side of minor assignments. Like, I wouldnt turn in anything formal with doodling on it, but if I had handwritten notes at my job that had a poorly-drawn Spider-Man fighting goblins and random squiggles on the sides, not a soul would care. So long as one didnt disrupt the class and turned in your assignments, my professors didnt care what you did. One person raised there hand to ask use the bathroom and the professor was like youre old enough to just go to the bathroom if you need to go.

Self-report?

I tend to think it has more to do with how we are socialized and incentivized to do so that manipulates us by taking advantage of our most base and primitive survival instincts.

No one wants to be ostracized by the tribe, that would mean loneliness and likely death throughout the vast majority of our existence as social animals. When put in an artificially stressful, competitive situation like school the "different and weak" become easy targets to single out because if the "tribe" is focused on shunning and cutting them away, they won't be focused on shunning and exiling YOU for your flaws and shortcomings.
