Democrat was decisively elected over his Republican rival on his second try Saturday.

Henry Whitehorn got 53% of the vote

I mean I guess 53% is literally decisively but that feels a bit like saying "I get paid a fraction of what you make" and then the fraction is 7/8ths

What's funny is his first win was thrown out because he only won by one vote.

And the follow up had a higher turn out and he won by a significantly higher margin that they couldn't bullshit their way out of.

Besides the headline Dems wins in red state. What can this person do to actually impact lives? Can they make laws? Or stop cops arresting people for weed for example? Or he has no power and title is meant as a look out in Nov 2024 this can happen kind of thing.

He won by 1 vote before, and his opponent played the Trump card and it went to court or something, then they declared a reelection, and this was him winning by 1000 votes or something.

This is proof that red states are winnable.

Dems need to return to the 50 state strategy.

Well, seeing as the general strategy among the right is a grassroots replacement of officials they believe to be corrupt with people they feel they can trust at the local, county, and state levels in order to affect the higher institutions in the long run, having someone representing your side at that lower level would definitely be useful towards combating your oppositions plans.

Wasn't OP a local election. Im in NY and have seen GOP win local elections. Like that George Santos dude somehow won in NY doesn't mean they can win the general election in NY.

Wouldn't same hold for Louisiana or that type of thinking shouldn't be done when it comes to red states.

When you google that first thing that comes up is a Reddit thread about the first election four months ago lol.

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskLE/comments/181s67j/why_is_sheriff_an_elected_position_why_does/

This top response

Sheriffs are a good thing because it allows the people who live in the areas to have a say in how policing is done. Having worked at a city police department we were pretty much at the mercy of the mayor who appointed the police chief, if our police chief didnt go along with what the mayor said he got voted out where is next door the sheriff was elected by the people and as long as he did a good enough job to keep his constituents happy and kept crime down he got reelected.

Certain states are. I've heard state representatives from both Missouri and North Carolina talking about how they have Dems running in seats they've never been in before or not for a very long time. It will ideally affect down ballot elections even in heavy Republican counties where the Dem will never win, however they'll at least have someone to vote for and the ability to vote for candidates outside of their district.

In NC, specifically, they have Dems running like 119 of 120 seats, if I'm not mistaken.

A reminder that Trump won NC by the least at like 77k.

I think that was the point of the post though. I think people are misreading his post and sarcasm.

Basically it was throwing it out until you succeed which is what they were trying to do.
