I supported all three of these! Oh no!

We form in crystals finally got enough support to make a bracket! I don't think I'll ever find a song quite like it - the sounds and mixing have a specific otherworldly feel that eludes any genre besides "PS1-era VGM." A YouTube comment made a fun comparison to Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells; for me it calls back to Tangerine Dream's Love On a Real Train and all the psychedelia-new age music in the years between. My brain parses the opening sounds as recognizable instruments, yet on closer listen I can only identify them as not-quite-a steel guitar and not-quite-a soft electric guitar? Later there's a violin that magically morphs into a woodwind as it likes. And why do the rhythmic groupings decide to swap places at 5:14?? Assuming Google's right that this soundtrack is synthesized using samples, that is some amazing sound programming to give instruments a sense of "live-ness" using the PS1's built-in audio effects...while also sounding like they're not from the real world. 1998, what a mysterious time!

Oh I have to say something about Cherry Tree Bridge...there really is nothing like it across the Etrian series, everything before 1:49 is about creating a virtual space with repetitive phrases and a lack of resolution. After the "drop" it becomes a more proper song with a melody that builds and releases, which is a great example of what my favourite "dungeon themes" are about - constructing a space that you hear more with your subconscious brain, then adding melodies that you listen to with the higher part of your brain, like you're now exploring that space.

I cried so many times at that finale! Hard to believe it's been two years. I was pretty used to the weekly-adventure-with-slow-burn-epic-plot from Steven Universe (which was my previous favourite cartoon), but I did feel that both started to drag about 2/3 into their episodes.

I've done a breakdown of Spring Wind Skylark so now I really feel obligated to comment...the most interesting thing I learned was to hear it as a straightforward anime or idol song - start with catchy hook, verse 1 at 0:20, verse 2 at 0:30, pre-chorus at 0:39 (the two pre-choruses is a little weird), chorus at 0:58 and 1:17 - cut it at 1:37 and you basically have your 90-second anime OP!

That was a fun nom period - I got to support Petal Bridge, my day 1 first-slot nom last year that got one support and then dropped! Also supported We Form in Crystals, another day 1 from me in 15 where it only got two doubles from me and DanKirby (guess who brought it back this year). That year was also when I discovered Flamerock Refuge as nommed by slykirby, who graciously supported my nom of it this time. Maybe those failed songs mean something after all!

Unrelated: I only learned about Round because it was recommended by chillphysics and Max on the SupraDarky server!
