So hey guys, I kinda hope you really love 4e, because 5e is going back to the worst parts of old editions: http://www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/4ll/20120305

I for one can't wait for Valerian to get punked by a random mageling because the dice felt like being douches!

So I was reading a post on grognards.txt and thinking 'huh a philosophically-inclined loony might be a funny character to play'.

Then I realized that we already had Amy.

Um... okay? I wasn't talking about the viability of RR, but maybe you couldn't gather that from my post. You should work on your reading comprehension.

That dude was following a freaking flow chart, basically. PR Rog didn't break 9/10 aerial exchanges by accident, it's because he was doing the same s*** in the same situations every time. He was calling RR in the same situations every time. He was RHKing in the same situations every time.

His playstyle won't last, and if you think so, god help you if you every attend a major.

Just like people adapted to Morrigan Touhou, yes? Which is to say, not really? Just pointing this out because Kusoru beat Justin Wong 10-8 on sets. You'd figure a set of 18 matches would be enough to download him if he were so formulaic, while playing arguably the best Marvel player in the world, but no dice.

No, it only sounds highly implausible because the Homestuck characters never use their powers to the extent they could.

Nobody has ever demonstrated an ability to create prototyping towers.

Supernal (And, I think, one other language) is a form of Allspeech, not Latin. It has the special perk of making you understood by everybody regardless of language. I think one of those two is takeable though.

But this can be fixed. It's not a loss condition for canny enough players.

I presume you're referring to the Beta!Session's completed battlefield. If so, I agree that would allow them to bypass that restriction, and I really should have said that they couldn't win on their own.

No, I'm saying that if you really wanted to win at Sburb, you'd build your own towers, time travel back to punch yourself in the gut and prototype something then go kill a king. If there is a path that leads to victory, it's the Alpha Timeline path. And there is always a path to victory, occasionally roundabout, stupidly obscure and multiverse-spanning as it might be.

Here's another crackpot theory from me:

The real reason the pre-scratch trolls couldn't win their session was not because their race was too peaceful to prepare them, but because they had no prototyping towers.

Recall that Doc Scratch (never lies, only omits) said that while the peaceful nature of pre-scratch Alternia didn't prepare their players for the game, he didn't explicitly say that's what caused their failure. In fact, two sentences later, he attributes their failure to the fact that the players weren't spawned in their own game. Seems like quite a disconnect from "their race didn't prepare them," especially once we compare this to the kids' universe.

The Alpha!Kids were spawned in the Beta!Session, so they can't win no matter how hard they try, according to Scratch. We also know they have no prototyping towers, which means their battlefield can't evolve (and thus their win scenario won't arise), though we haven't been told why the towers aren't there. However, they're clearly better prepared for their session than the Beta!Kids were. Sounds reasonable to conclude that the lack of prototyping towers comes from the fact that they weren't spawned in their own game.

But this can be fixed. It's not a loss condition for canny enough players.

Bardic Virtue of Cunning, TTiM instead of CotBF and Sign of Ill Omen for Unluck are the other changes I made.

...You mentioned something about my being underequipped yesterday, Kanz?

Pretty sure you should have gear equal to what everybody else had, yes.

PS: Also, if you aren't Skalding I recommend Eldritch Strike because of Dominates. It never hurts to have a melee swing, after all.

PPS: If you don't mind waiting one session to have it once more, I'd recommend taking Revitalizing Incantation instead of Ethereal Stride (I think that's your level 6 ability?). The former provides an absolutely crazy amount of HP, so it manes our healing is back to its previous level, which is really nice. At level 10, you could take Ethereal Sidestep instead.

PPPS: Also, what did you take Superior Weapon Proficiency for? You're not using any superior weapons...

...Just checking, if I don't take the Pact Boon with Hybrid Talent, I don't have to take Dire Radiance, or does being a Starlock just straight up require my having it?

PHB3 says to have it, I have to have selected the at-will associated my my pact, which... might mean I don't have to have something that's completely useless that I didn't choose of my own free will. (Picking something useless of my own free will is a completely different story. <_< >_>)

The former. So unless you have some cunning plan, it's far better to take either Eldritch Blast or Strike (probably Strike) and use that to trigger Skald stuff, or at least have a serviceable basic attack.

Summary:

-After killing Castor's entourage, the group ambled through the Twilight towards Omnian territories.
-On the way, an island occupied by Rael's forces was spotted. Snapping out of a funk, Valerian, T'horon, Brona and Quentyn agreed to send the latter three down to investigate and speak with the primitive natives, accompanied by Miss R.
-Down on the island, the trio earned the trust of the natives and found out that they had an ex-Raelite deserter held prisoner. This prisoner was none other than the one, the only Kirie Moriya, from Endless World.
-Alongside Kirie was the runaway crew of the Raelite ship, a group of dwarves. With Kirie's help and the complicity of the natives and dwarves, the trio prepared an assault.
-Infiltrating the Raelite camp, the five braves struck Zaza, the leader of the Raelite's, by surprise.
-Of course, she was not so easily defeated, as she summoned the aid of her backup dancers. In spite of this she was quickly dispatched...
-But not before Quentyn actually succeeded at flirting with one of the dancers, convincing her to join the crew! Not having a name, she called herself Dubs, in reference to her being the second of four dancers.
-Back at the ship, Valerian and Euri attempted to crack Amy's troubled shell after the meeting with Rael, with the help of Konamy and Samantha. The former managed to calm Amy down enough to stay onboard.
-As the braves from below returned, now in control of the Raelite ship, Euri jumped ship and left with the dwarves. She will be missed. Kirie joined the crew in her stead.
-Arriving at Omnian lands, the group finally succeeded at unearthing the mystery of Forget's past. Five hundred years ago, she had been a member of the Order of the Lepus, a group of thirteen unlucky warriors who had challenged Learrette and lost.
-Unfortunately, the Omnians refused to part with Forget once convinced of the veracity of her status as a paladin. On a hunch, Valerian mentioned that he was following orders from Mentalo, the mentalist...who as it turns out, was once the third hand of Omna!
-Thanks to Brona's silvery tongue and some quick thinking, the locals were appeased. Mysteriously, however, Mentalo later showed up to speak with Kirie! Following another mysterious hunch, Valerian found them...
-Just as a Amy spoke with another Mentalo...his evil half, Anti-Mentalo. Sensing the latter's presence, Mentalo challenged him, and urged the group to leave the island before it was too late. It was only barely that the group escaped, watching the city collapse into a singularity behind him. Mentalo's status, as well as the status of his evil twin, are still unknown.
-That night, Valerian had a strange dream. Challenged by the warrior princess Rei Lufienne (who he claimed he had singlehandedly defeated some time ago, along with her bitter frenemy, Kyoko the Wu Jen) to a duel, they fought a fierce battle. Valerian comfortably held the upper hand...
-Until Rei struck a mighty blow, bringing him down to his knees, while the real Rei very nearly cut the leader of a vile cult down with a mighty attack.
-Summoning his last reserves of strength, Valerian chanced his victory to a final, all-or-nothing attack. Overcoming Rei's defenses, he barely defeated her...and everything faded into consciousness.
-Distressed, he reached for his sword, only to find that Vae Damno, his trusty blade, had disappeared. In its place was a blade of colors black and scarlet, black as coal and red as blood: the blade that Rei had used in their battle. The Akaff Gantritor, the Blade of Kings. Though there is no proof of it, it is possible Mentalo is related to the mysterious switching of the blades.
-Everybody earned 1400 XP. Everybody but Kirie earned 38750 gold. Only 700 XP to Level 10!
-Once more, the group ventures into the Twilight:

First things first, wishlist. With the Blade of Kings in Valerian's possession I kind of need to retool a bunch of things. I would really appreciate an opportunity to visit another town and get some gear before further adventuring, because several items and feats Val uses lost their power due to him not having a Cold weapon anymore (unless the Blade of Kings counts as still granting his stuff the Cold keyword. If this is the case disregard the above, but I'm not holding my breath). Wishlist:

-Boon of the Fading One, Dragon 389.
-Dice of Auspicious Fortune, Dragon 381.
-Backlash Tattoo, Adventurer's Vault 2.
-Defensive Step Training, Dungeon Master's Guide 2.
-Battle Standard of the Hungry Blade, Dragon 381
-Prison of Salzacas, Adventurer's Vault 2.
-Power Jewel, Adventurer's Vault.
-Ruby Scabbard, Adventurer's Vault.
-Pitted Flowstone, Heroes of the Elemental Chaos.
-Counterstrike Guards, Adventurer's Vault 2.

And now the summary. Brace for greatness.

Quiet, you!

EDIT: Anyway that doesn't seem all that good.

Inflicting Vulnerability is mad good, actually. There's a reason it's giving rise to entire new builds!

because I was afraid of losing out on the Warlock class features.

I'd take Hybrid Talent for the Pact Boon anyway, especially for Star since it has by far the best pact bonus.

No, that's Elemental.

I was thinking much more long term, but yeah - this confirms that it wasn't such a bad idea, if it took so long for the garrison to get out. We'd have been forced to pay a bloody price to smash our way through the defenses.

OK, so the kaboom happened overnight. Not sure if it was Monobear's doing or somebody else's, but it's a fair guess that it didn't happen until some time had elapsed. And we know it wasn't Biscuit or Spiral, so I'm curious about who else could have done it.

Levelup by massacre. I approve.

I really don't mind when you guys go off the rails, I really don't. Perhaps I mishandled the Amy thing, because I wasn't sure how else to handle her trying to talk to Rael himself, but generally, I kind of like the unexpected. It keeps me on my toes.

But I absolutely did not even slightly expect you to gas an unknown number of humans to death and orbital drop their leader without trying to talk to them first. >_> Did not even occur to me that you might until you were asking about how to gas everyone.

I was actually hoping for slow-acting toxins, but yeah. This is something that's gonna stick in Val's mind for a while.
