i think two months ago now i had a friend keeping track of this since Jan tell me and a couple friends her take on this:

yes, this is "just the flu."
before we had developed any immunity and resistance, that is.
basically, what would happen if a flu variant spread for the first time ever?

with the current numbers and estimates, i think she's got it. it has a low death rate, a high asymptomatic rate, but its infection rate is stupidly high and a lot of people are gonna die or need hospitals from that alone. there's a few major differences here and there - the length of time, the severity to the people it does hit, the symptoms, all the different biologic functions corona impacts that the flu doesn't - but it's a similar picture when looking at just the basic numbers.

don't know any specific definition that can't be scrutinized and picked. just about every definition will mix hereditary aspects with broader continental aspects whereas ethnicity will focus on more specific regional ones - sometimes very specific like the differences seen between Northern or Southern Italians. so "black" would have, in its definition, people whose main visible and biologic characteristics connect them to Sub-Saharan African descent. i'm sure better, more precise ones exist.

The concept of black people as a race goes beyond people of sub-Saharan African lineage. Yes, something like sickle cell anemia is most prominent in multiple ethnic groups all more recently descended from a similar region. But thats not all black people, and what ethnicities count as white and black have changed over time

i just see this as an attempt to redefine race to a point where it's meaningless as opposed to just confronting that both race and ethnicity are things that biologically exist, not categories to be removed. actual science doesn't get rid of them because that reality's consistently reared its head.

not particularly.
while anthropology does deal with the uncomfortable aspect that race is more than a skin deep issue, wasn't particularly going in that direction and sticking to disease, blood, bone marrow transplants, etc. though ultimately i'm sure we'll disagree as you value the social science that desperately tries to veer away from it more than i do. we've constantly tried to go away from the issue and blame other things only to come back to realizing that yeah, race is a thing too. the recent shortage of black blood wasn't even a year ago and a lot of it is due to people thinking all blood is the same.

nah, one aspect can be ethnic but another racial. using sickle cell, most common within sub saharan african descent. this isn't an ethnic group, there's multiple ethnic groups in that region, we're looking at a racial one. it affects black people in the US, Africa, and Europe alike despite multiple generations and regional differences. you can do the same for certain bone issues across different races too, it's just certain quips in the DNA and body that do mark differences that have stuck with us for literally hundreds of years.

ethnicity is another factor, sure.
but if you're gonna go the biologic route race helps delve further than that. sickle cell anemia is the classic example there and again, racial blood shortages have been a thing. they're both factors.

but if things need to be rationed out, to higher risks based on the data the place has would be important.

all depends on how the symptom aspect is rolled out and it's not like you can't just say you lack sense of smell and taste, how the hell are they gonna prove that? just seems like political bullshit for the like 20 black and latinos over in Wisconsin.

My main point is that the term does not accurately communicate what is alleged. Like, I would guess that a nonnegligible fraction of people who have heard about this think that the allegation is that Biden committed "standard" rape.

honestly, it's just a really, really difficult argument to thread without setting bells off and you're just asking for people who were already somewhat hostile to become really hostile when you're going down this road. and this is despite the fact that, based on what we've seen of you in here and the difficulty of the subject, i think most should be able to get what you're saying and that you're not being a bad guy as much as struggling to get what you mean across.

and sure, i get that effectively you're saying that on a scale of sexual assault to penetration with his dick, this falls closer to the former. going by the general claim Reade's made and presuming it was true, if he had "just" pushed her against the wall, started kissing her, groping her, but stopped there, that's sexual assault. while he crossed the line by also penetrating her with his fingers and it turned to rape, it is closer to the aforementioned assault as opposed to her being, say, bent over in an alley.

personally i get what you're saying there - it's rape but it's not rape; there's penetration but it's not with his dick. there's a certain underlying aspect that, when we think of that word, presumes a more vile action took place.

but know that this is also a defense that helps people get away with it. classic example there would be the idea that rape must either have the victim incapacitated or involve other methods of violence to it; if she doesn't have two black eyes or a broken leg, she must've consented somewhat so it's okay. here you'd say that sure he penetrated but it's a small penetration so it's not really the same thing. the defense is the same.

like yes, there's a scale. and technically in law there is also a legal scale too, rape you'll find in 3-4 degrees usually. but if you're gonna talk about a scale, be really careful to make sure you aren't using it as a defense of the act and are just bringing it up as social commentary on an indefensible act.

yeah, she's walking away from this with a ton of support and money.
it was the Texas Supreme Court that did the release, basically telling the rest of the courts to not jail anyone for contempt of court like this. the ruling itself was pretty awful, literally asking to apologize to government officials, telling her that she should've gotten a lawyer, and just talking down to her the entire time like she's nothing. fuck that. didn't need a lawyer, just needed a national outrage.

i mean it doesn't prove the most important part of the allegation - Biden fingering Reade - but it would clear up that 1) there was indeed a complaint and 2) it was sexual. going a step further it says she struck a deal with the chief of staff, that'd lead to more areas of discovery. nothing here is proving anything but it is evidence suggesting that something happened, probably sexual, and it was brought up at the time with people in his office before getting shuffled off to the side. that is considerably more than the claim that nothing happened at all and should apply more pressure to the basic premise of name searching her in records, which Biden vehemently opposed to doing.

There is zero chance any company could get away with releasing a remaster of a game without it being the definitive edition in the year 2020. It didn't even cross my mind.

I can't recall a single instance of that happening during this generation, which has been the king of ports and remasters.

Warcraft 3 comes to mind.

I believe we all agree the US numbers are real except the craziest of the crazies.

even US officials can't agree the numbers are real, have constantly readjusted them, and if we go to states they also admit they don't think the numbers are the real count.

so no, he's right.
on the one hand we've got people, officials, and a couple doctors pointing out that the inclusion of various deaths doesn't make sense, something that has been backtracked a few times already to prove their point. on the other we've officials, scientists, and other doctors point out that the numbers aren't accurate because of a lack of testing, a lack of proper diagnosis, the way deaths aren't counted not being quite right, and people dying in their homes - which is about 2/3 of all NYC infections btw.

on both ends, it's clear that we're trying our best to make an educated guess but are still totally guessing and the numbers aren't quite real, just estimates we think.

you're picking fights for no good reason here.

it honestly depends on just how much it has to be. personally i ran HBG the entire time on the PS4 and eventually will again on PC if i get it/its sequel on PC when it happens. for that user it's definitely played more like a TPS, even if what you're mainly doing is lobbing cluster bombs and sticky bombs as opposed to going pewpewpew.

and i do fear the movie will prompt the idea of making an actual shooter.
