Later in the 90s I had some Power Rangers figures, the Thunderzords, morpher and blade blaster. Z-Bots were great too. Had some individual figures from Batman, Terminator, Dick Tracy, and Ghostbusters.

In 1991 Hasbro bought out Tonka and obtained the GoBots characters along with it. The G2 line from 1993 had a Go-Bots sub line. There was a figure simply named Gobots which was marketed in Europe, and since then there have been a number of figures sold through Transformers as an homage to GoBots, and some of the characters have appeared in the comics in some form as well.

Back in the early 80s there were a number of transforming toylines in Japan and Korea. US toy company Tonka headed over and talked with Bandai. They got the rights to license their Machine Robo toys for the west. At first they marketed them as is, and sales were poor. They changed the name to Machine Men, but much the same happened. Then they went a totally different direction and split the figures into two factions (Guardians and Renegades), appointed a figure to each as leader, gave them all new names, and developed a story tie-in with a comic. Thus the GoBots were born.

Meanwhile Hasbro saw what they were doing and headed east as well. They spoke with Takara to license their Diaclone and Micro Change lines, Bandai for their valkyrie jet, and ToyCo for their Astro Magnum. They teamed up with Marvel and split the figures into two factions (Autobots and Decepticons), leaders, new names, story and comic, etc. The Transformers were born.

Tonka then worked with Hanna-Barbera to produce a cartoon they titled Challenge of the GoBots. Hasbro continued to work with Marvel along with Sunbow and Toei (among other studios) to create their animated series. Challenge of the GoBots premiered on September 8, 1984 and The Transformers on September 17. Both began with a mini-series to test the waters, and then started up proper in October.

When Hasbro licensed figures from Takara they chose several from their Diaclone line, and others from Micro Change. Among those included various mini cars that would go on to become Bumblebee, Cliffjumper, Brawn, Gears, etc. Cassette Man and three Cassette Robo figures which became Soundwave, etc, and more.

There were four transforming guns. A Browning M1910, Smith & Wesson Magnum 44, Walther P-38, and a Walther P-38 U.N.C.L.E. The Walther was chosen and would later become Megatron. The Browning was later used in Masterforce as... well, Browning. A tiny Decepticon partner for Cancer. He was mostly used for comic relief.

but yes there is such a series. Going back to the original from the 80s, it's split into various continuities (in animation and comic form). You're likely familiar with what aired in the west.

S1 (16 episodes)
S2 (49 episodes)
Transformers: The Movie

S4 (3 episode finale)

While the cartoon was canceled after the 4th season ratings were still up in Japan. Rather than continue where our Season 4 left off Takara scrapped it and made a new 4th season of their own called Headmasters which continues following The Return of Optimus Prime. The new Headmaster characters from The Rebirth still appear, but have different origins and slightly different looks. The Nebulan characters were never used in Japan. Anyway without going into details The Headmasters concludes with the various Autobots and Decepticons we'd grown up with up to the point (and the new ones) leaving Earth and traveling into deep space to continue their war.

Takara went on to create another five further seasons after that.

S5 - Super God Masterforce

S7 - Zone (which had a single OVA episode, the rest was told through TV Magazine)
S8 - Battlestars (TV Magazine)
S9 - Operation Combination (TV Magazine)

The focus here based on your inquiry is Masterforce. This series picks up a few years after Headmasters and shows a new group of Transformers called Pretenders who are capable of covering themselves in an alternate disguise over their robot forms. They can alter their size as well to compensate. The Autobots here take the form of humans while the Decepticons are demons. The Decepticon Pretenders were sealed away for thousands of years until they were awakened by a force named Devil Z. Meanwhile the Autobots disguised themselves as humans and lived among them. Waiting for the day the Cons may be released.

The show has a number of continuity errors as we never hear anything about the prior battles of the Transformers. We never learn the fate of, or see Autobot City ever again. Nor do we see Spike and his family. The leader of this group of Autobots, Metalhawk, does get in contact with the other Autobots at one point, but that's about it. Why didn't he and the other Pretenders ever help Optimus or Rodimus? The show also features various Transformer bodies known as Transtectors which bond with humans who wear suits and transform into the heads and power modules. (Headmasters, Powermasters)

EDIT: In Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Alice is the closest live-action equivalent to the Pretenders. A Decepticon with a human form.

Yeah BW had tons of characters (through the toyline), but Mainframe's budget resulted in a reduced cast as they could only have so many main characters at one time. Many of the unused characters are portrayed in the Japanese spin-offs.

I guess this worked out differently in ReBoot as many of the characters were Binomes, and shared the same body model.

ReBoot premiered in 1994. By the time Beast Wars premiered in '96 Mainframe was already developing ReBoot's 3rd season which had a massive boost in animation quality. (compare ReBoot's S2 finale to the first episode of S3 for example). It still wasn't perfect, but it looked great for it's time. Now compare Beast Wars' animation to the Energon (2004) and Cybertron (2005) series. BW was better.

Donkey Kong Country is a bizarre show. The animation is okay, but all the characters look like they're made up of parts. They're usually always in motion. I recall Candy moving about often with lots of expressions. and for whatever reason many episodes had a musical scene.

Beast Wars is a great series (Transformers is my life, heh). The graphics do hold up a little, especially in comparison to other Transformers series that followed it. Great story and characters. Pity it's sequel pretty much fouled it all up.

All of the Season 1 characters were recently given a modern toy updates in the Kingdom line, and current Legacy line. Reissues of some original 90s toys are out in stores as well.

As for the idea of them transforming into animals, they did in the 80s series too, but more robotic. The idea here is that the natural energon on the planet shorts them out, so having a flesh like animal covering blocks this.

In Japan they created Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo while waiting on seasons 2 and 3 of this series. II and Neo use typical 2D animation, and follow different Maximal and Predacon crews on different planets in a different continuity happening alongside or after the events of Beast Wars. The Predacons in II for example turned into military vehicles, while the Maximals were animals.

Recently a 1984 script surfaced that was written even before the cartoon premiered. That one also killed off Optimus. The script had various drafts with different kills (and methods) before they finalized on the one animated. Some scenes in the final film come from an earlier draft too, which is why we see two Cyclonuses being made.

Yeah everything was done to change up what was in stores. If only they knew their fan base at the time, then Optimus may have lived.

Yeah it was over the top, and you're right Hogan was the host.

The show just tried too hard. They added fire and pyro. There were water hazards. The new gladiators hammed it up. It was too dark with flashy colored lights. The referee was literally the guy who played the ref in Dodgeball. and the Eliminator was far too long and difficult. They even integrated the Pyramid into it. The show had no heart, and lacked everything the original had which made it special.

To top it off it was one of Gina Carano's breakout shows as she was the gladiator Crush.

I used to get together with friends before PPVs back then and we'd play SD2. We would often set up ladder or TLC matches, and try to take the host's WWE Title with our custom characters. I always found it amusing that in those matches the belt rocked back and forth, rather than just hang there, and it didn't matter where the belt was positioned on screen. You just climb up, your character jumped around trying to grab it, and suddenly you had it.

Yeah Beast Wars was called Beasties in Canada due to YTV having a rule that the word 'war' couldn't be in a program's title. Mainframe's next show Shadow Raiders was a result of the same as it came from the toyline War Planets.

In regards to the original cartoon both Adam and Adora were essentially destined from birth to receive the power yes.

In the 2002 series the power was originally yielded by King Grayskull. His essence as it were was infused into the sword and Adam is given his form and power upon transformation.

In the recent Revelation cartoon on Netflix (continuation of the original), anyone can use the sword. Adam is shown he can even get power without it (but with messy results).

EDIT: Also for the sake of saying, after Cringer and Spirit transformed the first time they could talk in their normal forms as well.

As long as their swords exist anyone with the power should be able to revert.
