I tried watching some more Fruits Basket (and the 2019 for a change). There's this unnatural, "Tohru says anything and everything out to the viewer every time she's on screen" inner monologue that gets on my nerves. It doesn't help that the cat dude is one of those insufferable douchebag characters that is unlikeable to a fault (so the show spends forever making itself justify why he changes and isn't a total dickbag).

So, I'm gonna look for something else. This seems like a show I probably would have liked as a teenager or pre-teen. It is definitely written and presented that way. I am not its target, so I'll just find something else.

Given that Atelier was one of my favorite franchises for a decade before Ryza took off because of the thigh thing, I'm not sure how I feel. I'm probably just still miffed they stopped dubbing them around Firis and couldn't play Ryza on its own merits...lazy bastards.

My friend said the exact same thing, so I should be in good for two different runs of the material.

Got recommended Fruits Basket by a Youtuber friend, so I gave the first ep of 2001 version a shot. I always put it off despite its reputation, because the premise is one of those, "If this is really fucking dumb, it's going to hurt." sort of things. It reminds me a bit of Chobits or Clannad. Despite the humor and silliness, it never seems to get in the way of some actual heartfelt stuff the characters are going through. It's not perfect by any means, but a show like this could have gone way wrong. If the remaining episodes keep the balance of drama and comedy it had in ep 1, this should be a good watch.

Too much going on. I like color and style symmetry. The V4 "black biker pants" look is sleek to me. That's probably why I prefer Ruby V1 too. Full black and red trim. Later light greens for the shirts bug me.

I like Weiss there, but everyone else improved with the main outfits. Yang is a big WTF.

I kept seeing the Yang one at a nearby anime store and thinking, "I"m not getting it unless the other three are also available." Kinda how I wavered back and forth on some SpyxFamily stuff when I saw Loid, Yor, and Anya all together at the same time for about $35 each, which I bought as a set.

Found a show called Kabukicho Sherlock (after about 5-10 other meh choices). I'm not completely sure about this yet, but the seedy yet colorful atmosphere, the weird as balls Holmes character variants, and the off kilter approach might make this good in a weird way.

And yes, RWBY Volume 9 was good. They have some miles to go (3-4 more volumes left I imagine). 1-2 in Vacuo, 1 elsewhere or setting up some crazy shit, and 1 as a return to Beacon/final show down lets fucking go.

Though I could be wrong.

Elaina has more in line with Kino's Journey than anything else...so it is definitely not a "healing" show.

I finished up last season of Magus Bride in prep for this season, and damn, it is way better than I remember. I'm hyped for the OVAs and more in Season 2

Turning off random encounters and changing EXP grind makes this an instant buy for me.

There's a point where a great character idea gets driven into the ground by overexposure. Now shut up so better characters get more screen time. Let me watch Ibuki point at things, dammit. POINTING!

Anyway, speaking of Mahiru, I think of her like Haru from Persona 5. I came up with a phrase to describe it: "In a land of crazies, the normal people stand out more." Haru obviously gets shortchanged due to coming in way late. Mahiru also gets very little "character" to work with. But there was something likeable about her just being a "normal" girl when confronted with the usual pack of weirdos these casts present.

A year late to the party, but My Dress-Up Darling looks pretty awesome already. Kitagawa just pops off the screen, and the premise is pretty unique. The ED was catchy too.

If nothing else, it passes time until episode 9-5 releases this week.

Voice actor trivia for Queendom: Practically anyone who is a main cast VA reprised their roles in the English version. Christopher Wehkamp (main character in Yamato, Edgeworth in Ace Attorney, etc) is Roman Torchwick in this. They originally wanted Billy Kametz for that, but uh...that didn't happen obviously. FML; he would have been good.

I would ignore Ice Queendom.

All the new stuff is a big pile of meh. The only good parts of the show are the redone content (all three episodes of it) and the visuals/fight scenes). The new story is a lame flame out of potential.

I loved the movie. I forget if CR has the series.

I'm a sucker for these cyberpunk setups (Darker Than Black, Solty Rei, etc.) and this was another that held up well. It has some cool characters, and I think the last few episodes made up for some iffy first few.

Found a show called Dimension W. It doesn't have the greatest writing, but I love the cyberpunk meets bounty hunting setup. I'm getting Cop Craft vibes from this: a show not perfect, but enjoyable. I'll see where this goes.

Barakamon was 8.38 or something, and I found it watchable but slowly losing my interest. No Guns Life by contrast was like a 6.5 or something and it was exactly what I was looking for at the time. MAL's use for me is, "Sub 6 is probably a bad sign...."

There's something fun about picking something cold turkey and being surprised. For every show like these three, I'll stumble on Vanitas (which had word of mouth, but I didn't know shit going in). So who knows. Everyone has their own approach.

Finding new shows to watch. Started with Beast Tamer (was meh). The Maid I Hired is Mysterious is Tomo Chan is a Girl, with KH style writing that is somehow WORSE. Seriously, just replace Hearts or Darkness with "Suspicious" and "Mysterious," and you know what the first and only minute of the show was like.

I hope to find something new to watch before bed, or I'll just be trying to fall sleep with intense frustration and stupidity over that last show...ugh.

Edit: Realist Hero was better than the first two, but still a nope. Fairly boring and not in the pleasant Ascendance of a Bookworm kind of way. More the, "we have 1 good line for ever other 5 boring ass drivel" kind of way. Pass.

RWBY fans really didn't do a good job of letting people know the show was good again! I mean, it's going around now, but that whole volume was crazy good.

Maybe volume 8 sucks or something though and that's why lol. Will know soon enough.

I think the people who wanted the comedy stuff just dropped off or something. The Atlas arc clearly defined the stakes of the show going forward, and really hammered home the importance of things. Having Weiss's family take center stage didn't hurt either.

RWBY doing weird fairytale stuff is a good change of pace from all the super serious stuff. All the weird camera angles and stuff also help for the fight scenes. Robbie Daymond as a Cheshire cat is too obvious and awesome a casting choice.

It's doing a decent job of redoing the Gung-ho-Guns and either making them more threatening or giving them some level of backstory.

Mostly, Vash and Wolfwood are carrying the show, much like they did in the OG. They are certainly toning down the comedy, which helps....a bit. OG really hit it's stride when it got more serious the last third of the show. But the first few episodes made the characters more likeable so the show dropping had more effect.

Then again, OG had twice the amount of episodes to work with.

I started watching Barakamon. Seems like this has a really good feel to it. The main character is a dick, but the older, self-obsessed and annoyed kind of prick that can work if done right. I think the kid and the rest of the townsfolk have a good sense of humor. Its good comedy, for a show that could easily have veered on the boring side (like these things sometimes do).

I'll see where this goes.

I mean, it's cool they have have the full Advent version. It'd make a nice break during a stream, but this and the Ardyn final boss theme are long as all hell. The Ardyn theme doesn't even have the excuse of being interesting.
